As for Hunt, I like his energy but I think that that is really the only dimension to his game. He doesn't have the trickery McGeady and Duff have and anytime I've seen him he looks like he's going to get a booking or red card. As best he is an impact sub but if would be interesting to know what "the iffy reasons" given were.
I was talking to a Swedish girl about that match a couple of weeks ago and she said the full back that played in that match hasn't been called up since.Quote:

Duff has been by far and away our best play along with Given since the '02 world cup imo. Pity we hadn't got motm polls going on this forum before now. Too many people have very bad memories. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Duff was our best player in close to 50% of the matches he has started since the world cup.

Lets call a spade a spade. Our central midfield partnership hasn't worked for a long time. I don't subscribe to the theory that Lee Carsley is doing anything positive for us. Its time to bring these guys on now and mould them. It has to happen sooner or later, and due to the dearth of talent in the middle of the pitch I think it has to be sooner.
kingdom, ive seen that mccann fella twice live, and he was overshadowed by other players, particularly kyle lafferty from what I remember. So i think he has a lot more to do before he deserves a call up. On the hunt thing Ive thought about this before, he is a real box to box type player I reckon, as he would run his heart out, it would be interesting to see his positional sense though, I wonder would he just be a headless chicken running all over the place, or would he have good positional sense, that and the fear of him getting sent off would worry me about playing him in midfield, because he is so uber-exuberant that he could get caught up in the whole thing, and start flying round the place. Thinking outside of the box is key to the next manager, something done like this could be the key to unlocking this team to greatness.
There's no way Hunt has the positional sense to play in the centre for us imo. Very similar to Kilbane really.
McGeady is a class attacking player. I would have him nearly first on the team sheet for every home game. I would play a more defensive player/formation for away games.
Obviously stan did'nt agree he played McGeady for away games and dropped him for the home games

That's fair enough. Club form shouldn't matter for a player like Duff. He's too good to drop and constantly proves that for Ireland.

I've heard it said a few times during the last year, most tellingly in a Daniel McDonnell article, that there is an old guard / new guard split in the camp. I think players like McShane, Hunt and Doyle feel that some of the others are living off their 2002 reputations. The rumoured situation above is consistent with this.
In my opinion Hunt should stay quiet. If the manager wants to pick an attacking line up in a meaningless exhibition match then that's his prerogative. At least he's in the squad and gets used unlike Clinton Morrison. Daryl Murphy should have got time alongside Robbie on Wednesday but I haven't heard him complain.
McGeady and Duff both did enough to justify their starts on Wednesday and though I'm a fan of Hunt, I thought he was very poor when he came on.

Jesus terrible tackle on Hunt by Carsley, Hunt was not too happy at all. Very bad tackle but not quite as bad as Hunts tackle at Man City I think.

McGeady's only a kid FFS, a great talent. If he was 28 and regularly crap for Ireland then write him off but he played poorly when he was 20, years before many players even get capped. He has shown enough to show that he has immense talent but is still work in progress. Sometimes I wonder if we deserve talented players given how they're treated.
You've also got to ask what Staunton told McGeady to go out to do and what he ever said to him. I'm not deflecting blame for McGeady's poor showings in eastern Europe but you get the impression he was told "you play out left" and not much more.
I tell you what: I'm bloody glad we have him and not Scotland.
Also, if we ever improve our set pieces there are no better players than Duff and McGeady to draw fouls in dangerous areas.

Think its different for Mageady as he is a player who beats and takes on other players. How can you say McGeady has never played well for Ireland? You really do seem to have a vendetta against him. Granted, when he's started a competitve match he hasn't played well (aside from Wales, which I'm pretty sure he started) but neither has Hunt. McGeady is a lot younger and a lot more talented than Hunt. He will come good for us.
Should also be pointed out that the last two games have been the first time McGeady has gotten a chance to play in his best position. Suprise, surprise suddenly improved performances...
He is a lot younger and is a lot more talented. But his performances for Ireland have not been good. I dont have a vendetta against him. Id love him to be playing well for Ireland. People need to take off the Celtic tinted glasses. When he puts in a few good performances he will have earned his place. Until then he should be on the bench.Quote:
