He keeps an eye on him alright. I reckon there'l be another 'bravo!' text coming James' way via Casa del Trap on that showing.

It's hard to judge his performance given the massive gap in quality between City and Wigan. What you can definitely identify tonight was his work rate; when people say he's a box-to-box midfielder, there is definitely no exaggeration in that. I was impressed with his tackling tonight, he definitely has no fear of getting stuck in or playing in a defensive role. Going forward, his game was less impressive. A few of his passes were wayward, but he was certainly less wasteful than his team mates.
It's too early to be talking about him moving to a club in the top 6 (Man U, Man C, Arse, Liver, Chel, Spurs), but I definitely think he is a Premier League player and should be at a better club than Wigan. Hopefully Wigan will get relegated in the Summer and McCarthy can get a move to a team like Aston Villa, Sunderland or Fulham.
People forget he is only 20/21 years old with lots more improvement in him.
Not Fulham.
Now Sunderland. There's an idea.
just gave away a bad penalty by needlessly handling the ball in the relegation battle at loftus road.
helguson scored. these thing happen i guess but this could be a big moment in both sides seasons.
James will hoping Trap doesn't get hold of a DVD of today's game.
Got the assist on Caldwell's goal, a mi**** volley that fell to Caldwell in the area.
not playing a massive part in the game, but comfortable when he is possession
<EDIT>
That's mis-hit that's been censored!
McCarthy's effort on the volley was still goal bound when it was deflected towards Caldwell, who on noticing a pig was flying across the stadium, decided to exhibit a magnificent piece of skill to get the ball under control, get around a defender and slide it past the advancing goalie.
Hail Hail Caldwell
Lets just say it was Andy Carroll defending.
That was one of the best performances by Wigan that I've seen this season and James was an integral part of it.
Was also very impressed with Jimbob as well today. In fact, watching him play in what was mostly a holding role, had me questioning why he hasn't been given an extended chance by Trap in the team. I guess he just has his favorites.
Nice to see Sammon get a runout too.
Edit: lol @ Liverpool.
McCarthy looked outstanding against West Brom the previous weeks as well, going by the highlights. The BBC commentator also mentioned that he was having an excellent season that night. I haven't seen enough full Wigan matches to know really.
Haha :)
I suppose there is a big possibility that he is now playing his last few games for Wigan. Liverpool may have shot themselves in the foot in more ways than one should that result keep Wigan in the PL, that's if they are still interested in him. I presume the transfer fee would be a lot lower if they get relegated.
A big night for Wigan beating Man U. Cracking goal from Maloney, an excellent cameo from Sammon and a quiet enough game from McCarthy except for a few daring runs forward.
Thought he played keep ball really well against a utd midfield that were real poor. Was funny to see how bad cleverly was when he came on for second half. When u tink of the abuse gibson used to get then poor cleverly must be in the dog house on the utd forums tonight.
When one scapegoat departs, 'fans' will find another and then will claim you know nothing about football unless you agree that such and such a player is useless.
I think anyone having a go at Cleverly is being very harsh imo. He has hardly played this season due to injury and has been in and out since he has come back. I honestly don't think Man Utd fans would be having a go at him if he played poorly when he came on last night. I am sure they have seen enough already to know he is a good player who can develop into a very good player.
I tuned into TalkSport Radio for the last 5 mins commentary last night. The co-commentator (a Brummy, Collymore?) said that McCarthy had just played what was arguably the worst pass of the season. Facing United's goal, he turned around, ran back towards his own goal and played a ball straight to wellbeck which nearly put him in. If accurate, Trap won't have liked that!
Nah it wasn't arguably the worst pass of the season because no harm came from it, however it was potentially a contender for the most disastrous back pass of the season. Fortunately for James there was just enough weight on it and the goalie was alert to make up the ground and connect with it at the edge of the penalty area.
In that passage of play, Man U were desperate for possession, James had won the ball in the middle and got ambushed, he won it back again but was surrounded, he kept possession with a few tidy turns but in the end had to turn and face his goal and made the only pass he could.
Trap likes a lucky player, a player who deservedly gets a let off from his only mistake on the night :)
In the first half James was given more license to go forward and had a lovely strike from distance. In the 2nd half, he stayed firmly in the holding role, mainly closing down space and making short secure passes. Afair, the Wigan goalie only had to make one save, that's a credit to the discipline of the Wigan team in the face of non stop Man U pressure.
Only saw highlights, but have spoken to some lads i'd normally trust on these matters, and said Mccarthy showed lots of energy, box to box, but good ball play also. Didnt see that myself but didnt see the whole game. UTD fans though so maybe they think when UTD get beaten then automatically the opposition play better than they really did...
If true, good to hear, but UTD were so poor in midfield, so perhaps, made look better than he really was.
I'm still pretty sure that a midfield made up of any 3 of McCarthy, Whelan, Andrews and Gibson, flanked by any of or good wide players would be a formidable unit. Only problem is who'd lead the line. One solution could be to deploy Walters or Long wide right with a license to move inside, using Duff on the left.
Man U were poor in the first half, Rooney was poor throughout and after he was replaced by Nani, Utd's attacking play went into overdrive.
When a full back (who almost never scores) knocks in an incredible goal from 35m out, we can say he was lucky, when a regular goalscorer does it, we can say it was an incredible goal.
When McCarthy has played to that level for the most part of this season for Wigan, we can say that his performance last night was due to his inherent ability and not the poor performance of the opposition.
McCarthy is capable of being a box to box player but he is not given that role for Wigan and definitely not last night. When he did get forward last night in the first half and Wigan lost possession, they were left badly exposed through the middle. James rarely left his post after Wigan went a goal up.
Atmosphere and some of game pattern, reminded me of Ireland v Holland 2001.
from what I saw that's what I felt too.funny thing is I thought I read on bbc that Ferguson said leaving wellbeck up on his own too early was the wrong decision so thought he meant even for the possession they had they didnt do enough to win because he was isolated and no real clear cut chances.
Didn't really see any of it, but maybe Man U were made to look play bad by Wigan?
Incidently when I saw the fixture I fancied having a bet on Wigan, the only thing that put me off was
the fact Wigan were not bottom of the table, bottom club beating top always seems to be a good bet.
Not sure what price I would have got on the win. Probably 7-1.
I note it is Wolves V Man City on the 22nd, you can get 9-1 on that. Should be 100-1!!
McCarthy played the full 90 minutes in Wigan's 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates tonight. Two excellent results for Wigan in recent days that might go a long way towards helping them maintain their Premier League status.
This was from the live BBC updates:
Quote:
Wigan's James McCarthy has done more than anyone to break up Arsenal's rhythm tonight, covering so much ground in the Latics midfield.
I had a few doubts about the defensive side of his game but I thought he done very well tonight.
Yeah, James had a good game, had Rosicky by the balls. He put plenty of weight on the pass backs to the goalie this time.
Caldwell motm though, he was a rock out there. Sammon again came on late and was a constant thorn.
Saw the result pop up there but didn't see the game. Was going to ask how McCarthy did. I've been underestimating this Wigan lot - had 'em down as relegation fodder these past two seasons.
Very neat interception around the 70 minute mark to take the ball off Walcott and deny him a break from a Wigan corner. Sky Sports said he was full of running in the first half.
Wigan in good shape to stay up now, only a point behind Villa and five points clear of 18th
Saw a bit of it, second half good team performance, at one point McCarthy played a pass which looked pretty dangerous to
me ie very close to being cut, however it was not cut out so maybe it just shows confidence.
Sammon played well when he came on, put himself about a bit. Great result for Wigan though.
Disgusting to think that Trapattoni rates Green ahead of him
Even at the start of the season, Wigan always looked too good for the drop. They play some great football but they lack the couple of outstanding players other teams have that turn losses into wins.
On the evidence of tonight, one the best players we have...
A player that can retain possession under pressure...
Gibson disappeared in the 2ns half against Liverpool..
McCarthy's a better player and don't mention Green who is absolute rubbish...
Mid season they were playing cráp and at times worse than that. That game that had Dave Whelan in a frenzy was possibly one of the most insipid performances of the season by any EPL team. It was awful to to watch.
From the context of those depths, Martinez has done an amazing job to keep plugging away at the style of play he wants them to play.
There's no easy choices for Trap now, considering how well James is playing the type of game Trap wants him to play.
Wigan are going to name a stand after Roberto Martinez, it's going to be called the Harry Houdini stand.
McCarthy made the interception which lead to the goal, indeed he headed it clear first and then intercepted a second Arsenal
attack turning it into a Wigan break and goal.
