yeah, saw Disturbia several weeks back, essentially a "teen" movie which I hate and didn't realize at the time.
would recommend "The Look-out" though.

Thats what the trailer promised but i thought there were one or two real scary moments.
gonna keep clear of disturbia then. Anybody seen death proof yet? Have seen very mixed reviews for it.
i've seen death proof and really enjoyed it. very cool film. although to be fair kurt russell is one of my favourite actors(ever since he put on the eye patch to play snake pliskin, even though technically that was before i was born LOL). death proof is not a typical tarrantino film , there is something which feels like an action movie about it, but i'd definitely reccomend seeing it, just for some of the car chase scenes if nothing else, performed by the actress involved, without a stunt double. very impressive.
i would also reccomend planet terror the otehr half of grindhouse, its amazing!!!
yeah, you'd never tell though, shes a pretty good actress IMHO, pulls the role off well.
Isn't Disturbia just a poor teenage re-hash of Rear Window? Haven't seen it (Disturbia), but thats what it comes across as
Superbad is absolutely hilarious!!
Saw "Eastern Promises" last week, extremely laboured dialogue and the acting isn't great. But I got to see Viggo Mortensen naked in a sauna...mmmm...so that somewhat compensates for the bad acting. Some of the violence is pretty realistic, opening scen is especially gruesome.
Off to see Into the Wild this evening, written and directed by Sean Penn. Oscar material according to the critics, so hoping this is as good as they say.
Also seen Ratatouille last week. When it comes to storyline it's definetely not in the same league as Nemo and The Incredibles but still well worth seeing if you're into great animation. It's almost 2 hours long, a bit too long to bring the kids to, no?
Keep an eye out for American Gangster next week (Fri 16th). Gangster movie by Ridley Scott who's my favourite director.
Anyone else seen anything good lately?
Went to Saw 4 last Saturday having not been in the cinema in ages. More of the same really, not nearly as original as the first in the series and a few plot holes you could poke a mountain through, still if your into that kind of thing it'll keep you entertained.
Ended up back in the cinema again on the Sunday and it was a choice between Eastern Promises and Ratatouille, went for the lighter animation. It's good fun and the two hours went fast enough, was definitely a few restless kids though. The animation is phenomenal at times, the scene where the rats are washed down the river is truly spectacular.
passinginterest - agree on the animation and most part of Ratatouille is fast paced animation which I thought was well made.
Am a bit reluctant to Saw 4 as I didn't like the third installment at all. I think I'll wait until it comes out on DVD.
I can recommend 3:10 to Yuma. Went to see it without knowing anything about it and loved everything about it, acting, script, cinematography, music etc.
Went to Ratatouille with the youngfella a couple of weeks ago and thought it was good fun. Going to Elizabeth tonight I think, thought the first in the series was very good when I saw it on DVD recently; despite being incredibly annoyed by StupidFirstName Blanchett's looks.
Watched a classic last night, 2001: A Space Oddysey. For some strange reason I'd never actually seen it. The design and effects were brilliant, and some of the sci stuff that wasn't all that fi, for a movie made in '68. However in general the whole thing was a bit trippy for me. Worth watching, but never again I reckon.
adam
Would definitely recommend Eastern Promises.
It's kind of like the Godfather meets . . . . eh . . . . . . . a Russian.
Saw the 3:10 to Yuma, in contrast to DIFCHick I thought it was one of the worst remakes ever, somewhere in the overkill remake genre. It defiles the original.
The original B&W 3:10 To Yuma is a B&W classic. It is tight and intense. Full of athmosphere where the tension slowly builds up, the farmer's (Van Hefflin) dilemma, the outlaw (Glenn Ford) trying to psyche him out in the hotel room and the get me to the station on time.
What you have with the remake
For every one bullit fired, now we have 1000
Instead of 3 or 4 deaths, we have 200
Instead of a farmer's wife, we have Gretchen Mol
Instead of an outlaw we have super-outlaw.
It has turned a totally believable plot into something that is all over the place, an adventure into science fiction.
Haven't read most of the previous posts so I'm guessing some of these will have come up already:
The Departed
A History Of Violence
The Learning Curve
The Girl Next Door
Saw (1+2, haven't seen 3 or 4)
It's so annoying, I've seen quite a few films on TV that I though were great but can't remember the name (you know those films, not a lot of big names, probably low-budget, and brilliant).
Saw "Control". Based on the life of Ian Curtis - Joy Division lead singer.
Pretty good.
Into the Wild is next on my must see list. While I'm here I'll recommend Half Baked as well, it's out on DVD and is just a great movie
went to see 30 days of night today (as recommended by my brother) and it was very average. How it got a 15 certificate I'll never know when you consider it has a few vampire beheadings along the way.....but other than that it isn't very scary. Considering I once jumped when watching the village that is saying something!!! It had the potential to be a very good movie if they toned down the violence and messed with your head a little more but they went for the blood and guts.
Next on my list is amercian gangster. Good trailor for I AM LEGEND doing the rounds (new Will Smith movie which has his character walking round NYC as the only human survivor of some tragedy.....or so you think).
Tzameti 13, saw it first in the cinema a few years ago and loved it, was screened on BBC4 a few weeks ago. Takes a wee while to warm up, but give it time.
"The three burials of Melquiades Estrada."
Tommy Lee Jones directorial debut, and a good omen for the future hopefully. Half in Spanish, for those who detest subtitles. Lee seems to speak it fluently in this film.
Into the Wild is well worth seeing. Cineworld on Parnell St. really need to upgrade their air-con system. Last half hour was like sitting in a sauna (theatre no.10). I had read the book written by Jon Krakauer before seeing the movie on Friday, so I knew the story of Christopher McCandless and his Alaskan Adventure. The actor who plays Christopher was in Lords of Dogtown and in Alpha Dog which didn't really showcase his acting skills. They guy does a good job in Into The Wild, maybe an Oscar candidate?
I haven't seen the original 3:10 to Yuma so I went in with a new look on the film and really enjoyed it. I suppose if the remake of 3:10 is anything like the other remakes such as Halloween , Psycho, Omen, King Kong, Poseidon, Charlie & Chocolate Factory, Texas Chainsaw Massacre etc. it probably was overkill.
I'll give the original a go just to get some comparison between the new and old.
Just read the original posters message there, so here's a cut from my top list of arthouse films:
Pi, Memento, Kes, Eraserhead, Donnie Darko, Yojimbo, Cube, Fargo, Amores Perros, Blade runner, Carandiru, Delicatessen, the Big Blue by Luc Besson and Cinema Paradiso.
Watched The Bourne Supremacy on RTE last night. This is the only film I have watched belonging to the franchise(hate that word!) and I have to admit I thought it was cracking stuff.Never bothered with them because didnt believe Matt Damon could carry it off but he is really good in portraying the man hunted to edge of his sanity .Obviously the whole premise isjust silly fun but IMO its darker edge put it streets of recent Bond films.Looking forward to seeing the other two.
Fargo is imo a masterpiece.Dark, funny and incredibly tense.Donnie Darko, I thought it was good but a bit overhyped(I was expecting to be blown away!).
I was seeing a Swedish in girl in London who constantly raved about The Big Blue(it must appeal to the Swedish sensibility!)-I thought it was just ok:)
Cinema Paradiso is in a word beautiful and watching it can change your life.
Yeah Cheifo, I suppose the love the main character has for the ocean would be the same as what we Swedes feel for our lakes and vast forests. Went for a drive in Wicklow mountains a couple of months ago and almost felt like being at home...
I have a new one for ya, I went to a preview in Swords/Pavilions last night: Beowulf.
I saw The Polar Express on Sky Family the other night and Beowulf is filmed in the same style. Not sure what to make of it really, visually very different. It felt a bit like watching a video game but with better graphics of course. Ray Winston and Beowulf don't look anything alike but the other actors where easy to recognise. I think there was a poor attempt at speaking Swedish or some Scandinavian sounding language, words were mispronounced. Wonder if they hired a translator or interpreter for this movie? Lots of nudity but a couple of well placed elbows/cups etc. covered up err, bits. It was quite funny! Angelina Jolies anatomy was just weird, especially the boobs. The preview in Dundrum was in 3D, would have loved that!I'd say go and see it just because it's something different.
Going to American Gangster this evening with high expectations.
Adam, did you go to Elizabeth the Golden Age? Good or bad compared to the first one?
I saw it last night. Before watching the movie, the only Joy Division song that my wife knew was Love Will Tear Us Apart; today she was digging out my Joy Division CD's.
The film is set in late 1970's Maccelsfield and is made in black and white. The Joy Division singers' short life was ended by suicide. The film is based on a book by his wife, Debbie Curtis. Joy Division got a new singer after the death of Ian Curtis and changed their name to New Order.
Brilliant film.
I left the cinema after seeing Control thinking it was alright , decent enough , but the more I thought about it the better I thought it was it took a while to sink it is what I'm trying to say , brilliant performances by all especially Riley
I'm just after watching it again and I hope someone else has mentioned it before.
Downfall is a brilliant film. Bruno Ganz is excellent as Hitler.
