The match itself is mentioned here anyway, so that seems to add up - https://www.nufc.com/html/obrien_sundaytimes.html

I read he can't be called up today by England as he'd need to be cleared by UEFA or FIFA if he decides to switch. Perhaps this is not correct.
If he does decide to change allegiances, it takes a few months for the paperwork to clear.
This thing about GSTQ is a bit strange to me. I know there's a lot of history there but is that really the litmus test for Irishness in 2018?
What is one to do with the Rice in my cupboard ? I just can’t face it .
To be fair to Rice, I'm sure hundreds of young footballers are being advised that nothing is binding in playing underage international football and sadly nationality doesn't mean as much as it used to in the modern world. There have been thousands of applications for Irish passports following Brexit from people who have up to now considered themselves British. From Rice's point of view, he wasn't of England's radar until the last year so may not have had any opportunities in their underage set and has probably benefited from the experience of playing for ours
Gareth Southgate discusses the future of West Ham defender Declan Rice, who has played friendly matches for the Republic of Ireland: "There are so many dual nationality players and he is a good young player. He has a really difficult decision. There is a lot of pressure on him and I am conscious there is spotlight on him. He is with Ireland at the moment and as much as we think he is a very good player, that decision has to fall to him."
If I was Rice's agent I would be extremely unhappy with that statement from Southgate, instead of doing what Roy Hodgson did with Grealish and say "its his decisions, but he is English after all"
Southgate has put all the pressure on Rice and imo is slightly infaring that he and the FA have clean hands here
They were already Irish citizens according to our laws, hence they were allowed to apply for an Irish passport. Just like how you and me can head down to the passport office and get a passport. As far as I know our citizenship laws have always automatically granted citizenship at birth to the foreign-born children of Irish-born citizens. So I'm not sure what changes in the modern world you are referring to. Emigration has been a feature of Irish life for centuries...Quote:

Depends how good he is . Even more so with them than us .
If ya were middling to good for us then we would be happy . He will have to be good to very good for them to get much credit .
If he is bad he may be Paddy Rice .
FWIW he still follows a load of Irish players on twitter: https://twitter.com/_DeclanRice/following
For all the people saying we should follow the Wales model and cap our most promising dual nationality players, do you think it would it be worth it to do this, and sacrifice any success at underage level?
Ah my head is fried with all this Rice talk.
[QUOTE=tetsujin1979;1973499]I thought I saw a tweet from Dan McDonnell on this after the press conference on Monday saying that he would not be in the U21 squad, but I can't find it now.[/QUOT
If he turns up for the U21s then we are dealing with the biggest sociopath in the history of the state. He might as well run for Fianna Fail in the next election and then open an Irish school in the gaeltacht, whilst representing England in football of course
Hyperbole is literally the worst thing to ever happen to humanity
I stand by my pithy observation
Southgate call for a Rice take-away.
I think we've been mullered.
We have to Rice above it !
Usually Rice has no problem being found in a field of paddies.
It doesn’t look like he is going to be a Staple for us .
Ris otto know by now who he wants to play for.
(Apologies for the typos)
Yes... I'm not even sure why there is a debate about this. We get a guarantee that the player won't switch and suddenly stop playing for us* (or even play against us). We can start thinking about building the squad accordingly. We know Rice can play anywhere across the back and midfield but he probably stronger centrally. We could look at pairing him up with other young players in the U21s we could look at getting Roy Keane to try and mould him into a defensive shielding midfielder.
Rice and Grealish are the types of players we could build a next generation defence / midfield around and if we knew we had them for the next 15 years we could start doing that now.
All we have to do is play them in injury time during a competitive full international. We talking seconds to lock them down, not an entire match. I think they could conceivably play in U21 matches during the same international fixture break anyway. I don't see how it hampers the U21 squad.
You could argue keeping players (who may opt out of the senior squad) in the U21s stagnates Irish football. Grealish and Rice's places in the underage squads might have served Irish football better had they gone to players who wouldn't wander off the scene. We could have found out their sentiment earlier had we tried to cap tie them.
*I appreciate they could retire prematurely but I think that is unlikely and is a general risk with any player
Sus hi still doesn't know who he wants to play for yet.
Of course it's all still speculation, so maybe i'll get rapped on the knuckles somewhat, but is there a sense in the last few days that he's more likely to side with us after all?
Maybe not featuring for West Ham (bar league cup) has swung things back in our favour, or maybe he just really did need to take a little time to think about it. Comments like these from O'Neill are the basis for my thoughts:

Apparently Declan Rice coming back now...Maybe Harry Arter said something to him? LOL :)
