My recollection is that Reid was injured in Charlton's last game before the German game, but he was fit and playing for Charlton in August last year when the squad was announced. In this context his ommission from the squad was a surprise & it attracted a lot of criticism as well as speculation.

He was unavailable for Cyprus.
It's history but imo Stan deserves the benifit of any doubt in this matter. Reid had come on a sub against W Ham and then missed the next game. I don't recall when the squad was announced.
Stan's decision was imo justified by the mere fact that Reid in the first game for his club after the Stuttgart game had to retire and was out for a month.
It's great news that he is back now and available.

I think he is decent but to suggest that he is our best midfielder is laughable...althoigh he possibly has the potential to be talent wise, bags of potential!
Regardless of merits, he is back and playing well.
And a good headache for our manager is when he has to choose from a bunch of the best of our available fit midfielders.
Having a fit and in form Andy Reid as well as Stephen Ireland is great news for us. Both players are technically excellent and it's not often we can say we have midfield players of that abililty that can unlock even the best defences.

He was decent against the czechs, but so was o'shea, and so was douglas...Stephen Hunt has had a more successful period in the premiership than him, id rate McGeady higher aswell to be honest and stephen ireland, steven reid, duff (although injured) are higher up the pecking order..
Speaking of Stephen Reid, is he back yet? Quality player when fit.
Reid has well proven himself by now. He's better than Hunt and McGeady. No doubt about it. Ireland is technically very gifted but definitely not Reid's standard yet imo. I think if you replaced Ireland with Reid for the away match in San Marino we would have won it fairly comfortably. He's a much more dominant player. He's not really similar to Duff. Duff is a much better winger but Reid is a much better playmaker.
I don't think you can play down the fact that Pardew made Reid the captain of Charlton. He's only there a year, hasn't played much, and isn't exactly a vocal leader. He scored a peno for them last night. He will be the difference between Charlton winning the league and finishing 10th. ;)

i think Reid will have a really important role to play for Ireland over the next year. D Duff will more than likely be injured and I think Reid is Ireland's best option on the left when DD is out.
Hopefully, he can stay injury free, get a good run of games under his belt and a premership club will come in for him in January.
On another note- spoke with Reidy's father recently and i was shocked to learn that Stan hasn't called Andy once since he took over to wish him well with his recovery or even to tell him he's still in Stan's thoughts.

Have to say I love watching reid play. we should be building our team around him. stick a couple of ball winners in there to help him out. hunt has a great energy and urgency about him but he seems a bit limited. I like Mageady as well. I just like to watch players who can actually play football. I have always been a fan of stephen reid even before he was flavour of the month:rolleyes: but I dont think he has played well for Ireland at all since staunton took over. pity. we have some good players at the moment shouldnt be any excuses for not giving qualifying a good shot. anymore stan morinos and staunton should be shown the door.

They key to both playing well for us is confidence in my opinion. Once each has a really good game for us in his preferred position it could be a turning point. I watched a bit of the first half and i must say Reid is looking fitter than i have ever seen him. Seems the Health farm helped him
Saw the game. For 60 minutes Andy looked like his old self again but faded near the end and started giving the ball away. Optimistic though that he's getting back to his old self. It was no coincidence that as Andy faded, Stoke got back in to the game. Delap was fairly anonymous for them but did ok.
He appears to have lost alot of weight or is it my imagination? Played quite well I thought and will only get better as the season progresses.
played quite well, i love his left foot. perfect passer to the feet, his game deteriorated though as time went on. Think he could have grabbed the game by the scruff of his neck and should have, he would have needed to play further up the field to do this, i felt he was playing to deep at times. the goal was fortunes i beleive in the end. good to see reid again though.
Is that the paddy mccarthy that was with leicester, if so i cant see him playing for charlton again. very very poor performance. both goals directly his fault.

Throw in a couple of Paul Scholes tackles in the last 20 minutes and that is his old self in a nutshell. Smashing player though. Hope he gets a move before the Aug 31st. Too good for the Championship.Quote:

I watched last half hour, after I posted here and he was poor in that time. He lost possession and it led to Stokes' 2nd goal. He hasn't played a lot of 90 minutes recently so hopefully he was just tired by then.Quote:

Yeah that's the same Paddy McCarthy that many of the heads on here were claiming deserved to be in the Ireland team only a few months back obviously without ever having seen him kick a ball (or get booked). He was really poor though for charlton. No reading of the game, out of position, slow, not agile or quick acceleration, everything that doesnt make a good centre back. BUt thats about only the second time ive seen him play so I cant judge fairly either.
