Horrendous error today for the opening goal against Newcastle. Low ball across the box, he awkwardly swung a leg at it but it went through his legs and was finished by the striker behind him.
As the sky commentator said it looked impossible for him not to make contact with the ball, yet it somehow happened. One game shouldn't overshadow an otherwise great season. Particularly a game when the entire Sheff Utd team looked out of sorts. I don't think Wilder will go stir crazy with him over one game, he'd been on something of a silver streak until the lockdown.
Stevens is having a solid game, he almost scored a Messi kind of goal, and later he built the 1-0 with a perfect through pass to McGoldrick
I think he was the blades best player by a mile, played left center back, in a back 3, so composed on the ball led the few bright movements from tge bcak, his teammates are atrocious. Egan also solid but two from 11 its hard, if the blades go down I can see both staying in the premier league
Enda played very well , very composed on the ball going forward a menace, McGoldrick too, plaudits from espn broadcaster Walter Vargas
Scored his first league goal in more than two years today, in a 4-0 hammering of a presumably drunk Fulham side.
Onto the playoffs next
Goes off injured after 54mins tonight.
Good to see that Stevens (32) is on the bench for the Blades' game at Huddersfield tonight, after more than 3 months out with injury..
He's come on after 8 minutes, replacing Lowe, who presumably has picked up an injury himself
First game since the first week of January
Starts in the game away to Birmingham City; Kevin Long not in the squad for City.
Looks like he's being released by Sheffield United, though I don't think they've formally published their retained/released list yet.
Reading are trying to get Wilder as their next manager. If he does indeed takeover wouldn't be surprised to see him look to bring Stevens in.
Sheffield Wednesday might be a good option for him, still in the Championship and in the same city he’s been in for a while..
Enda Stevens ~ Decent player if he can stay fit.
Reports that he'll be a Stoke player soon.
Yep, confirmed now. Better than I thought he'd get to be honest, given a recent history of injuries and he turning 33 at the weekend. Maybe still an option at international level, with the usual note that we need to find a longer-term solution there sooner rather than later (as O'Dowda showed in Greece - and in fairness to O'Dowda, that was his first notably bad game for us I think)
Stoke left a few players go in the summer so it's a decent squad signing for them. Provides cover for Tymon at LB/LWB and gives you cover at LCB too if needed.
I'd say his international career is over at this stage. Has been a sick note the last two seasons and turns 33 this week. Can we afford to have both him and Coleman in our squads this season. I'd say doing a NI and fast tracking a youngster into the squad next season would be better than recalling Stevens into the squad.
Yeah, that's a fair way of looking at it too. We're still struggling in this position I think - I wouldn't write O'Dowda off yet, but equally I don't think we're in a position to put Stevens out to pasture. Which, with respect to him, isn't a great position to be in.
Sent off for only the second time in his career tonight, away against QPR.
Though Stoke took the lead within minutes
Played 90 minutes on Friday in his first game for almost four months. A 2-0 win lifts them nicely clear of the drop; they're now five points clear of the drop with nine games to go.
Stevens (35 in July) is to leave Stoke City (Derby Telegraph, 5 May). He played in 18 of the 46 2024/5 Championship games, averaging 66 minutes, but has not been in the squad since 12 March.
He has knocked a decent career out of it, fair dues to him. Curtailed by a fair amount by injuries, for clubs and Country.
I think he would have a good few more appearances for us ( and his clubs ) bar a lot of injuries. Good physical attributes for a fullback i.e. A decent size in comparison to some of the vertically challenged others.
Can some-one rid me of vertically challenged full-backs ~ To paraphrase Shakespeare or was it King Henry the VIII ? !
Looked miles off his best the last time we called him up. Wonder if he might return to Ireland for the last year or two of his career.
That was against France away wasn't it? Wouldn't have been the only one of the squad to have struggled in that one
But yeah, probably not going to get a Championship team at 35 (players born the day after Italia 90 are almost 35 now!) so hard to see him getting capped again. Our Coleman/Brady/McClean/Stevens/Doherty wingbacks are drifting away and while there's been a bit of success with replacements (O'Brien the obvious one) I'm not sure we have someone really nailed down there?
We have various imperfect options on the right, quick centre halves like O'Shea and O'Brien comfortable at full back rather than real wing backs, or wingers with high work rates like Ogbene, but we're very thin on the left. Long may Brady's second wind last.
We'll see where Stevens gets his next game. If he's able to get on the pitch from time to time for a Championship club then he's surely a useful backup for us, but a real stopgap option at his age.
I would be fairly certain that he's done at international level. Even allowing for our weakness at left back, I thought it was striking how far off it he looked in that France game, even compared to the rest of our own team. And that was a year and a half ago now. More recently he hasn't been getting a game for one of the worst teams in the Championship.
We could keep an eye on Alex Murphy, 21 next month; 13 appearances and 2 goals for Bolton W in EFL One since 28 January, averaging 74 mins. He is 6' 2" and played at CB twice, but as LB or LMid on 11 occasions. It will be interesting to see what Newcastle do with him in 2025/26.
He seemed to be in and out of the Bolton team, I was hoping for a bit more from him but it was a first loan out so maybe too soon to judge. Bolton have also been linked to a move for Sean Roughan from Lincoln. I was hoping he'd get a Championship move but might have to settle for a bigger League 1 team or SPL.
