I think Staunton was that reason, not O'Shea!

O'Shea played central mid during most of Stan's tenure, no?
Finnan played left back because he could play there whereas Carr couldn't.
That's how I remember it anyway.
Of all of Stan's dumb decisions playing Finnan at LB wasn't the worst in my opinion.
O'Shea can play left back quite well in my opinion. He's actually very strong on his left for a right footer.
No no no. You people have terrible memories. Finnan never played left back when Carr was in the team - not even once. He only ever played LB when O'Shea was playing RB. Carr often started at Finnan's expense, believe it or not.
Who played right back in Stuttgart, Sept 06?
Arne Friedrich
One of the problems though was that Finnan never looked that comfortable at left-back and when he "retired" he did say that he was frustrated at being picked there when he saw himself as purely a right-back.
If you go back to Kerr's time in charge Carr was generally preferred at left-back over Finnan as well.
Looks like wilson has a good chance of continuing to be part of the Portsmouth central defence in the future. He was well regarded by both Adams & Hart, before thier departures, and Avram Grant worked with him when he was last at Pompey.
From the Portsmouth News
As for Wilson, he thrived in the absence of Kaboul, outshining his considerably more senior defensive colleagues in the process.
Strong in the tackle, cool in possession, the 22-year-old rose to the occasion, displaying remarkable maturity.
Unquestionably, it was the Irish youngster's finest moment in a Pompey career which hopefully will be a long one.
Brought to the club by youth guru Dave Hurst as schoolboys, they have since flourished in the system.
You can quote the team sheet all you like but anyone who saw the game and actually took any notice of it will recall that Carr played RB, Finnan LB and O'Shea and KK played CM, with S. Reid wide right.
Apologies if that was what you were humbly trying to say.
I know, though Finnan did play a large part of one season at LB at Fulham.
I remember under Kerr when we played Croatia in a home friendly I just looked at Finnan at RB all night thinking what a thoroughbred right back he was. That was at a time when not many on foot.ie even rated him. Understated quality, just like the Toyota Avensis(?) ad. (I like to think I know more about full backs than cars).
No argument, that's exactly the way it was (in response to the now deleted comment from botn).
Sorry Stutts ....
as per my original comment
"I was at that game and thats the way i remember it alright with rgds to sheasie , carr and finnan"
i just deleted it cos i was trying to find some proof on the net but to no avail.
remember it as O'shea in centre mid , carr at right back and finnan at left back
Here ye Go....
With rgds to the germany game away - see link

Apologies, I stand corrected. What I was meant to write was that O'Shea never played left back and Finnan right back in the same match.
Marc Wilson conceded the penalty which led to Chelsea's winner today, the game ended 2-1 for Chelsea.
he was also sold a dummy in the game on saturday.
No, I didn't see the match myself, we're stuck with Liverpool vs. Wigan live here in Canada. The Chelsea/Portsmouth match is coming on next, I'll report back in a few hours once I've watched it.
