Not named in the Celtic squad today despite featuring regularly enough in pre-season. Disappointing, if not massively surprising. Hopefully he has another loan move lined up

Seems likely to return to Aberdeen on loan by the end of the current window - https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.foo...r-27511702.amp
Silly question, but is James McCarthy still playing football (theoretically)?
He's still at Celtic, if that's what you mean. Rodgers was asked about him recently

Quote:
Former Ireland man McCarthy (32) has not played for Celtic since October and made just one league appearance last term but has two years left on his Parkhead contract. He has been linked with a summer move to the MLS as he had appeared to have played his last game for Celtic in a dismal spell there, but Rodgers says he will assess the former Everton man.
“I’ve known since he was a young player at Hamilton. At this moment I’m assessing the squad to see where they all fit, and where it’s at. I’m taking the chance to see the squad up close,” he said.
He was listed as injured today, muscle injury, on the line ups & scores app I use.
MLS surprised me a bit, he is a guaranteed injury.
How is McCarthy still only 32?! It feels like he should be 36 or 37 somehow.
Looking at his stats, he was pretty much done as a top level footballer by 29. Had an odd career, over 250 Premier League appearances yet it doesn't feel like he ever really established himself as a standout player at that level or for his country. He's as well to just sit out his last two years at Celtic now and call it a day after that. Beyond belief that they gave him that contract.
Similar to Harry Arter, really. Given an insanely long and lucrative contract in spite of their limitations and highly questionable fitness history.
It wouldn't sit easily with me, but I suppose they're perfectly within their rights to continue to swing the lead and pick up the pay-cheque, despite doing absolutely nothing to deserve the money.
More fool those who gave them the deal in the first place, I guess.
I hope he buys his agent a good Christmas gift each year because only God knows how he got him that four year contract.
Named on the bench for the first time this season, away to Kilmarnock.
Starts for Celtic today, his first Celtic start since Jan 2022. They're 0-0 against St Johnstone with 15 to go, but at least it's a clean sheet so far.
Starts the Old Firm derby.
Done fine for the most part so far, looks more assured than his partner beside him anyway…..
Seems to have been named man of the match, looking at the Celtic forum?
Looked solid defensively and decent in possession, from what I saw of the match.
That looked a very soft freekick to save Lagerbielke, though I expect it'll still be Scales that gets dropped when Phillips inevitably comes into the team.
Fine performance from Scales, his distribution in comparison to the fella beside him was night and day in the first half in particular, hopefully he'll get more game time.....
Named in Celtic's Champions League squad for the upcoming group stage. Presumably the only Irish player across any of the squads?
