more rumours today that Zenit are prepared to offer Ł20 million for McGeady!
Paul Lennon in the star says 30m, but the Zenit chairman has confirmed no offers have been made. The transfer window is open for another two weeks or so in Russia.
Not a bad bit of business for Spartak Moscow! Fair play to them.
The Mirror and the Record are the 2 papers which carried the rumour.
Surprisingly, the Mirror has a 30% accuracy rate with their Zenit related rumours, 7 right out of 30.
I presume they got one right, which happened to be reported 7 times.
7 out of 23 then :)
That would be the Record's rumour replacement strategy. As soon as one rumour runs out of steam, replace it with another.
Playing VS Ajax at the moment on ESPN
McGeady doing OK first half. Ajax in control of game but look a little lightweight up front so far. Commentators saying that Juventus are reportedly interested in signing McGeady.
Spartak 1-0 up and a great goal from Alex. Lovely run off the ball by McGeady to open up some space.
ESPN commentators on McGeady: "He's been the best player by far. Has a great mentality. Knows when to keep it simple, when to hold the ball"
They're dead right too, best game I've seen him play, perhaps ever. One bad touch, but apart from that has been excellent.
I know Trap has mentioned Irish players moving to Italy but surely Russia is the place to go with the high profile of McGeady. Doyle could slot easily into this Spartak team (and any other top Russia team)and probably on double the wages he is on at Wolves and European football. Spartak have a top, top keeper so Shay will have to move to Zenit.
McGeady MOTM.
McGeady replaced in IT, looked a tad tired when he fouled the Ajax winger. A very good performance from him. IŽll look forward to seeing him line out for us. A sure fire cert :)
If McGeady plays like he did tonight and Duff continues his current form, it won't matter who plays in the middle.
Never thought about it until now but Spartak must be one of the most fancied teams to get to the final.
Didn't see the game but Sky Sports had him as the middle guy in a 4-5-1. Was that where he played or out wide?
Great to hear he is in good form.
Not sure about that Geysir, by all accounts they rode their luck tonight. Similar happened in the CL, they won 0-1 @ Marseille, despite being under the cosh and they were taken apart at the Luzhniki. So they should be still on terra firma for the time being. They have ability going forward thats for sure though.
Funny enough, I thought during the game, that if they progressed and drew Liverpool, it could open up possibilities for Aiden. Liverpool need a genuine wide guy, and that he could be an option for them. What do I see on an internet trawl this evening? McGeady in Liverpool link.
If it's not in the Daily Record I won't believe it.
Now that that nice coach Van Gaal is due to depart Bayern, they could be in the market for a decent winger by the start of next season.
Great to see an Irish player prosper on the continent and better himself. For too long our players have failed miserably outside their British comfort zone. Hopefully he will get another big move and go from strenght to strenght.
On yerself Aiden.
More reports about the link with Liverpool and Juventus in the papers today
Much rather he went to Juventus rather than play muck ball with Liverpool.
I'm taking it from your username that you're a United fan. I'm a Liverpool fan myself but first and foremost I support Ireland and I wouldn't want Aiden making a bad move.
Liverpool under Kenny are a club on the up and they are beginning to look like a team again with inventive players like Suarez and Meireles. I think Aiden would do well at Anfield. Juve on the other hand are absolutely atrocious at the moment in the once great Serie A.
He could do well with Anfield but it's a bit much to suggest Liverpool are on the way up and Juventus on the way down. Both are big clubs going through difficult spells, it's far from clearcut which would be the better move
Having said that I doubt anything will come of this. The Russian transfer window being open is extending the window for speculation so it's natural he was linked elsewhere but the Liverpool links in particular just seem a reaction to the Juventus links, which were in turn a reaction from the Zenit links, based on the Spaletti link. I'd assume he's going nowhere at the moment and that's no harm from an Irish point of view.
Unfortunately, I only caught highlights of McGeady playing for Spartak. If he's played as well as reported then I'm optimistic. Unfortunately highly technical players like McGeady live and die by the tactics thrust upon them.
Without reservation, McGeady, 100%, has played like **** for Ireland, he runs at people, closes down his own space, gives his own players no oppurtunites. Ask anyone who's played with him and they are ****ed off. Its how McGeady was taugth the game. But hes 24 pushing 25 now and should be learning.... Not every pass in the oppossition half has to result in a goal.
I'm willing to believe that Trap give McGeady a carte blanche with regard carrying the ball. But I'm not willing to excuse either. If McGeady starts vs Mcdna, w wl lse. Gntd
I wholeheartedly disagree. Liverpool aren't on the up more than they have been stabilized. They have next to no money and may not feature at all in Europe next year. A team that was overrun by West Ham and Bragga aren't on the up.
Like you though, I'm an Irish fan first and foremost and if Aiden went there then I'd become. Fan. I just think both he and we could benefit with a player in Serie A.
I agree he should stay where he is. He's only played something like half a season there and as it is things are going very well. He's getting regular football, being paid well and both the fans and management are very happy with him. Why should he move to Liverpool or Juve when he appears to be enjoying his football. Let him at least stay a few season in Russia; he's still only 24 and has enough time to go to a "bigger" team.
As a Celtic fan I can say his development stopped while playing under awful managers Gordon Strachan and Tony Mowbray who played a boring style of football and had poor players playing around him who weren't on the same wavelength as him. It's good for him now playing around more technical players who will have the same fast minds as him. I knew he would come on big time as a player because in terms of ability he has it more than any Irish player.
Spartak thumped 4-0 in league opener on Monday. McGeady was suspended after the red against Dinamo.
