According to the Liam George interview with the Sindo, Robbie missed one for the Irish U18s in the UEFA final against Germany.
we could copy american football, where the coaches are allowed to challenge certain calls, but if they challenge and lose, they can't challenge again AND they lose a time out (though of course sawker couldn't lose timeouts. maybe losing a substitution would work?)
I don't think anybody says he's sh!te full stop. He's just not playing well for Ireland.
And I think the fact that he is in such good form for Spurs, but not reflecting that form for Ireland is a source of frustration for many people, as we can't see the reasons for it.
I think it's pretty simple, the man needs a target man to be effective.
Doyle is good in the air for his size, but he's not a target man.
If we want to get the best of Keane (if we're going to use him as a striker), then I suggest we give him a big target man like Alan Lee.
Is Alan Lee better than Doyle? No, but as a team we may play better if Doyle is dropped or moved to the wing in order to accommodate Alan Lee up front with Robbie.
The best 11 players do not always make the best team.
Supporting Ireland is more than just supporting the team for 10 games a year. Robbie Keane is Irish and I'd be delighted if he was top of the premier league scoring charts at the end of the season.
Keane's appeal was rejected and he'll serve a 3 game ban.
That really is a disgrace. They are just protecting the referee here. It was the wrong decision.
Bad call. There appeared to be no discernable malicious intent. The fact seems to be that overturning it, or even recinding it to a more deserved yellow would have undermined an obviously fragile referee, which the board didnt want to do.
Shame.
I was impressed by Robbie's reaction after the decision. No ranting and raving at the ref. An apology to the opponent and a straight walk off the pitch. Oh for more to behave like that.
He deserves credit for the professional way he walked off but as a wise man once said 'You might as well reward me for not robbing a bank'. That should be expected from a footballer.
However, the appeal is a disgrace. I used to always side unquestioningly with the refs in the EPL (they do a tough job and unlike the majority of continental refs seem eager to clamp down on diving, which is to be applauded) but decisions like this show a dictatorial response; agree with us or be banned. If Robbie had come out and apologised for a dreadful tackle and said he would never do it again, would their decision have been the same?
They can't support ridiculous decisions like this and cry wolf whenever players or managers have a go. Referees tend to be portly enough without having their cake and eating it.
I'm not one to rip referees apart, and although the ref made the incorrect decision, I don't entirely blame him.
If you see something happen in real time in the context of a game, it may look worse than it is. Bad call by the ref but understandable.
The real villains here are the FA discipline committee, how can you see that on replay and say it's a red card?
Keane gets his 2nd against Fulham and his 100th premiership goal.
Two real poachers efforts, he's really added consistency to his game this season for Tottenham.
Especially nice to see him play so well after a disappointing match against Arsenal.
True.. But the partnership has to be acknowledged.
I still think Doyle and him have potential as a very good front pair.
Some pretty stunning Keane stats on football365 forum. He's scored 31 goals for Spurs in the year 2007 and with 19 Premiership goals in that total he's the top scorer in the calendar year. If he could start bringing more of that form to the international scene it'd be a huge boost to the new manager.
He shoudl be nominated for Player of the year as that is on the calender year and not the season. I am not saying he should win it but he should be up there with Fabregas and Ronaldo for player of the year.
