A lot of people can understand that statement--the fact that you seem to be irrational in taking things personally leads your comments to be dismissed by many of us on here man.
You go after those who dont necessarily hold your opinion.
And also, just b/c you went to the game today does not give you carte blanche. I mean its not the be all end all.
With that said again I think he should be in the squad. Its obvious.
I suspect you had a few at the game and I applaud that. But find a different outlet man, going on the internet is not healthy when you should be with friends.

I've nothing against Andy Reid as a person or as a footballer, he seems a sound guy.

When it comes to football, Trap has his idea of a footballer. It is someone who is as good at defending as at attacking. People sometimes forget there are two sides to football, attacking and equally important, defending.

What I saw in today's Sunderland match was a player who can pass well, but I wouldn't say dictate the course of the game, since Sunderland lost 2 - 0 in the end, and if he dictated the game as some claim, then he dictated a loss for his team, hardly something to be cheering about.

I also saw a player who made one or two crucial defensive errors. He was the nearest player to Robbie Keane for the first goal, and instead of tracking Keane's run, he headed in the opposite direction, probably hoping to start an attack. It showed a little defensive naivity to be honest, the kind that would be instantly punished by top international strikers, and it wouldn't matter if we were a goal down with 20 minutes left or a goal up, 10 minutes into the game.

When he becomes as good defensively as attacking, then I'd say the door would be open to the Irish setup. But you cannot play up his attacking abilities and simply ignore his defensive abilities, it wouldn't be balanced. And it's ok for certain RTE pundits to say Reid should be in the team when if the team fails, their job isn't on the line or they won't get fired. If Trap put him in the team and he put in a defensive display like we all saw today which cost his team a crucial goal, Trap would have to bear the consequences of the loss, while Dunphy and Giles would be smirking away smug and content in the commentary box with no consequences for them at all.

So in truth, I think after seeing how Reid messed up today defensively, we probably should be relieved he's not in the team/squad for the French games. And it was clear today that defensive centre midfielder is probably not his best position because he isn't good at tracking back.

Trap's football judgement has once more being vindicated today, while the judgement of others including RTE analysts who would have Reid in the side is again called into question.

I was browsing on another forum in the last few days and on a thread dedicated to our forthcoming play-off matches a poster wrote (in relation to Reid's non-selection) -

"Andy Reid won't play for Ireland again while Trap's in charge, or at least that's what I've heard. One of my mate's housemates who works for the FAI said that's an open secret in there. Trap was apparently called in a long time ago to brief the higher ups on the falling out, and made it clear he won't pick him. Reid allegedly made a comment about one of Trap's staff which Trap has blacklisted him for."

Another poster had preceeded this post by saying Reid would never, ever play for Ireland under Trapattoni.

It's another angle on the subject and could simply be more chinese whispers, but it was the finality in the tone of the posts that made me think it was worth mentioning on here.

Well whatever the reason he isn't being called up, I still don't think he would be a starter on the team. Fact is he wasn't a starter for a few games before the supposed bust up.

He has issues defensively. He doesn't track back and he seems to have no interest in the defensive end of things from what I saw today. Up until recently he was a couple stone overweight, and that's hardly a good thing against athletic international midfield opponents.

It's only recently he lost the weight, but the team is settled now.

As a wide midfielder, Duff, Lawrence and McGeady offer just as much, while Hunt offers a huge work rate going forward and back and never seems to tire.

Football wise I can't see how or why he should be called back into the setup.

Trap has said on record he would change the system to accommodate Steven Ireland. He was Man City's player of the SEASON last year. Andy Reid has been on form for a couple of months now and is significantly older than Steven Ireland. The old Ian Botham chestnut springs to mind (although I do think Andy Reid is a pretty good player, I don't think he is in Ireland's class)

I don't think the incident has anything to do with it. Like I said, he was called up for the Cyprus squad.

For what it's worth, I think he should be in the squad but I don't think he would make that big a difference and squad morale and discipline is also an important factor to a successful regime. To be honest I don't have a strong opinion on it one way or the other. I think there is a little overreaction on this thread and not enough balance.

That rumour has certainly traveled a long way via many ears:)
While I'd be wary of things that appear to make sense.
The other week, Bruce directly mentioned an apology was needed to break the ice in the impasse and yet we have Andy's word on what lengths he would go to be in the squad. Then we have Brady praising Andy's behavior whilst in the squad.
It sounds like a normal dysfunctional Irish family.

With regard to Emmet's contention that Reid can't have been that influential at WHL yesterday because Spurs won, every single report I've heard or read about the game says the result was a travesty, only Gomes, the woodwork and Darrent Bent's profligacy keeping Spurs in the game. The opposite to when Spurs lost to Stoke after totally dominating. Stuff happens like that in football.

But you do accept his defending was poor for the Keane goal and probably the main cause of the goal, ie he didn't track back.

Some people who saw the full match commented on here that he wilted badly in the last 20 minutes.

I think he was out of position for the 2nd Tottenham goal too, he should have been more central.

I don't doubt Reid has something to offer going forward, unfortunately when it comes to defending that's where his problems seem to be. If we conceded two goals against the French in Croke Park, you can say goodbye to qualification. Keeping it tight in two-legged games is essential where away goals matter. When Reidy plays a game where he is outstanding in tracking back, defending, and breaking down the attacks of other teams, then Trap will soon be on the phone to him.

So in summary he did a lot of good against Tottenham, but defensively he wasn't up to scratch and that probably cancelled out the good. He didn't do enough defensively to earn a place in the squad imo.

I haven't seen it yet, only going on several media reports.

Emmet, we are two goals down to the French with 45 minutes to go and we need to throw caution to the wind and go for it, we need two goals. You look at our bench and say who can we introduce that can turn this game around for us...

My point is, sure, maybe Reid doesnt have the defensive nous for Trappatoni's gameplan but there will be a stage where we will need to chase a result. There is very little on the bench with the craft and guile to change a game. Hunt is direct, Lawrence might bag you a free kick but for vision and technique and passing through the middle i dont see any effective changes that can be made.

Im not having a go or picking on you by the way, just creating debate. You seem to believe that Trappatoni can do no wrong while i believe that some of his decisions need to be questioned - we cant stand idly by and follow blindly, neither should every minute of his spell be invalidated by idiots like Dunphy or Giles or the remedial monkeys but there are questions to be asked, valid ones. And i suppose it boils down to the fact that i feel that Andy Reid has been unfairly castigated by the management. He could definitely add something to our squad - if nothing else he would add a solid "Plan B".

Watched an interview with Andy Reids father on some obscure tv channel last night. His father was saying he wouldn't dare tell Trap how to do his job, but that his son was still hoping to play for Ireland again.

He talked about how passionate Andy Reid is about his nationality. Even said the first think Andy does when he gets back to Ireland is visit Kilmainham Jail. A little bizarre I know but the guy certainly loves his country. What a contrast to Stephen Ireland, who Trap is actually being urged to pamper.

Class again yesterday and Sunderland were very unlucky. A sublime shot from Andy hit the woodwork and would otherwise have been goal of the month.

Given that, EVERY football pundit in the business, every Sunderland fan, everyone interviewed, AGREES 100% that Andy Reid is top quality and should absolutely be in our limited squad, at a minimum, it's clear that only a football illiterate would argue otherwise.

I don't think there has ever been a clearer case for inclusion and a more inexplicable case of expulsion.

Did anyone see the beautiful freekick taken by Glenn Whelan today, almost lead to a goal. He scored a great goal last week too. And defensively he's pretty good too.

Reid has it going forward but at the back he doesn't have much. We just cannot afford to concede even one goal in Dublin against the French. Reid would be blown away by the French, swept aside easily. A 2-2 draw in Dublin or even a 3-2 win would be a very poor result, the French would only need a goalless draw or 1-0 win at home.
