I'm working off memory, not of the actual match but watching videos years later and there was something about it in that fantastic collection - World Cup '90!! remember that binder thing with the stickers!! I'll look it up.

Just looked it up there and it seems to have been the right decision to allow the goal alright, as clarified in 1987. There was huge controversy at the time though (apparently) and I think the general feeling was that it shouldn't have stood. I'll take a look at that WC binder thing later on to see.
Bruno Bellone Penalty v Brazil 1986
Quote:
It's a little known fact that if a player takes a penalty and it rebounds back off the woodwork without another player touching it, the taker cannot touch the ball again.
i never knew this have to say unless it was a peno shoot out. i doubt many people know this.
Incorrect :)
It was in a shoot-out after extra time. Once the ball had hit the post and rebounded out, the penalty should have been deemed to have been missed. I think Clive Thomas was quoted on ITV.
The goal stood but experts said afterwards it was the wrong decision. Morally people weren't that fussed cos the Brazilian keeper committed a blatant professional foul in normal time and was seen to have got his come-uppance. That was before mandatory red cards.
Are you sure about the wikipedia reference DeLorean?
I was correct based on available information.
Sure everybody knows the rules are different for shoot out penalties :)
The madrid rule cleared it up for shootout penalties as well. The refs decision to allow that shoot out penalty goal was supported by the rule clarification.
So if the ball hits the post and rebounds out and hits the keeper and goes in it does count?? Thought so.
You have to read the Madrid rule then.
Fairly certain I read somewhere that France scored a pen in the shoot-out with Brazil in the 1986 quarter-final that happened that way.
The kicker hit it, it struck the post, came back out, struck the shoulder of the diving keeper and went over the line.
EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOKPsc6D7js
It was Bruno Bellone, about 5:35.
Keane's comments today about how the team is deeper than Arsenal and how Spurs want to be in Champions League do not sound like a man who is leaving for Celtic...
Also picked up a knock against Everton? Lets hope he stays healthy.
that world cup 90 binder was quality....i still have mine, take a look at it every now and then, such great memories....they should bring out something similar next year!!one thing i remember about it was that they had denmark in it even though they failed to qualify!!
Does anyone remember the pop up cards they gave out in boxes of Corn Flakes before USA '94? Best memory from childhood.
Yeah I think Romania pipped em at the death. The Danes were the only 2nd placed Europeans not to qualify. I'm sure winning the European Championship two years later made up for it, even though they didn't qualify for that either.
Robbie Keane scored two goals against Denmark in a friendly before...:o
Back to Robbie Keane.... anyone know how he played today?
Like a few other members of our squad - should probably learn to choose his words more carefully prior to big games. France certainly don't need to be told "we can take them";)
Listed as an injury doubt for France by RTE.
He was definitely injured. Gallas took him out right when he took a shot from the left hand side of the box. I was very very worried especially when he subbed off five minutes later.
If Robbie and Duffer are injured for the France game we are finished. This is gonna be a very long 2 weeks hoping that nothing happens to our big players
I did think he was limping just before he was substituted, but it didn't look serious
Hmm so a French player, who is managed by a French manager, takes out an Irish player. Convenient.
I thought he might have got a knock alright. Papers this morning said he should have scored twice when put in by Crouch flicks but I think that's harsh. Song madea great tackle on him to stop a certain goal, and Robbie showed a lot of skill to get into the position.
It didn't look like a bad knock - surely he'll be OK in 2 weeks.
Spurs aren't playing again until next weekend VS Sunderland, I expect he'll be fine by then. He was limping, but looked more uncomfortable than anything else.
Robbie played a game for us only a couple of days after his father died, I think he would play on crutches in these games if he had to.
Just scored a bundled in goal. Got into a great position to score.Thankfully this happened just after he was brutally hacked down by Bardsley. Not injured thank god.
