You have too many ifs there.
Afair, Cunningham was injured for most of that 2002 wc qual campaign and still wasn't 100% for the Finals. Staunton was in there, not as first choice.
How about another "if" thrown in for good measure, if Staunton had been able to continue playing in that last 16 game and had taken one of the penalties, would Mendieta matter?

We have had some very good player when we can mention Staunton , Irwin , Lawrenson , McGrath and thats only those mentioned in the last page or two.....
