Do you not think though they have provided a good antidote to the hysteria that followe the Jack Charlton reign and the blind loyalty that a lot of the Irish journalists showed. They were over the top in their criticisms in my view but no more over the top than the praise that was heaped upon Charlton by many members of the media.
What's wrong with a bit of hysteria? God knows we waited 50 years or more for it so we were entitled to it when it arrived.
It would have done no harm if one of the panel was critical of Jack's/Mick's way - what got to me, and still does, is that both were of the exact same view and O'H offered no balance. Time and time again the both of them said the same thing (Dunphy being the more vindictive of course but no contradiction from anywhere). For almost 20 years we had an RTE panel with no balance and no alternative viewpoint. Now, a few more pundits are being introduced which at least breaks up the monolith that is Giles/Dunphy/O'Herlihy.
Yes but the rest of the media was that balance. I agree RTE should have put someone in there that was a bit more pro Charlton. But I do not like hysteria. I think if eveybody agrees about something that is the time to worry and start disagreeing with them. It is important that there are people who go against the grain every so often. But every phone in show and tabloid and Gay Bryne and Joe Duffy and Cathal Dervan were in love with Charlton and turned a blind eye to some valid criticisms of Charlton. In my view Giles was very fair to Chartlon but Dunphy was over the top.

I was over in America for the knockout stages and the commentators there say that it is good defending when a defender nudges an opponent in the penalty area to prevent them getting a header on goal. They also praised Ecuador when their wall moved forward about five yards when the ref turned his back against England, saying something like you have to do these sort of things to win matches.
Laughing Bill to Giles after that great game last night: "Italy in the Final, John. Who would have believed it?" Bill thinks if the Panel rules someone out, the whole world thinks the same. Drunkphy has now discovered Italy after ruling them out as no-hopers earlier on. Perhaps he is klein4 on this Forum:

Yeah fair play to Eirebhoy also who predicted great things for the Italians, I had a sneaky feeling for them also but I usually just go with that it wont be won by anybody who hyas not won it before and I felt that England Germany and France woudl not win it either which left me with Italy Arg and Brazil.
I thought the RTE Panel was good last night buy Owls fan you only ever concentrate on little aspects to what they say. I think all the good stuff they say goes over your head and you have trained yourself into spotting the little negatives and contradictions that the panel say.
I think Dunphy judged ITaly on Juventus and Milan in the champions League rather than looking at the work that Lippi was doing as a manager. One of the greatest managers of the last 20 years in my view. Forza Italia
I also spotted you went for Italy ;) or Brazil.
RTE missed a lot of the emotional stuff on the pitch after the game. ITV had the panel (Andy T and Venables) talking over the pictures of devasted Germans and elated Italians while RTE had the lovely Giles and Drunkphy to look at - I hope they don't make the same mistake tonight or I'll have to channel surf again. I am hoping it is elated French and devasted Ports to set us a classic France vs Italy Final.

Soccer pundits cannot have it both ways. If England is not a world class

Rivalry is good in sport in my view and we should not say sorry for cheering against the English team. Every rivalry in sport is based on proximity Sheffield Utd V Wendesday, Liverpool V Everton , Man Utd V City and so on. Its part of sport.
However attacking houses is not.

I didn't watch the after match analysis but are you saying you can't attack a team just because you put a bet on them? I don't mind you slating the RTE panel but you just pick points for the sake of it. Possibly because I wrote in to RTE asking them to put those comments to the panel but they omitted the bit where I quoted Dunphy as saying the manager hasn't a clue and I did predict elsewhere that Giles would say "I can only comment on what I see, Bill" :D That's not true. Just because a team plays badly, it doesn't mean it's a bad team, have a bad manager and there is strife in the camp. was wathcing At The Races Stateside last night and they were talking about the world cup and the pundits on ITV and BBC.
Some guy from Dundalk wrote in about RTE pundits and quoted a few Dunphy classics like "Barthez is a clown" and when Crookes was interviewing Sven after England were knocked out he described it as "the closest two men have ever come to having sex on TV.They couldnt beleive this happens as they never heard a so called pundit ever speak their mind.
They were saying "thats the way it shoould be over here"

I think the greatest thing about the RTE Panel is that they are willing to criticise teams that win matches. They look at performance and see does the team do the right things i.e. pass the ball well, keep possession, track back, defend well and continue to make runs off the ball and create space for one another. These are all basics of the game. Its possible to win one of matches not doing some of these but you will not wint a tournament unless you start doing it. France were not doing a lot of these things for a long time but started to do them against Brazil and Spain. Last night they went back to their old ways. I think RTE are good in that they dont get mislead by the result. Many stations would be full of praise for the French even though they gave a rubbish performance last night.

Well since you admit don't watch them, I am not sure how you know that. What they say is: poor performance but they're through to the World Cup Final :eek: Cup competitions are not about performances - it's about winning the trophy. Also if we were to just look at results there would be no point in having experts in. The job of an expert is to explain how certain results have come about and why a team is losing or a team is winning etc. If the experts just went on results they could just read out the results at 5 o clock on a saturday or 10pm on a Friday night and say great performance there by Bohs cause they won 2-nil
