It would certainly be a bit of positive publicity for the league if such a well-respected figure got the job, even if he has little experience.
According to Kilbane on twitter he is waiting to decide on his future. Don't know is he just trying to be really secretive or still unsure whether he takes the job.
Do you think there are a lot of local players who could cut it at PD level? Off-hand I can't think of many at other clubs.
At most there are 3 or 4. It's hard to know since we have been out of the premier for so long and none of the local lads have had a chance to test themselves. There are plenty of lads around though that If given the chance could step up. I'd say the club will mainly look at our under19's. The club also seem to be regularly looking for players in Tipperary, Clare and some from Cork.
Bar Tony Whitehead, none of the 19s are currently good enough to even be part of the squad. I think a manager coming in from England would rather take in a few on loan from the UK rather than take up some lads who aren't ready yet.
I also don't get the love in for Kerley...I'd nearly prefer Dom Foley to come in as assistant than Kerley: his record isn't great like, got Waterford relegated, quit limerick twice and sacked by Athlone. Also, the game against Limerick last season in Jackman park always sticks out to me. Drawing the game with a few mins left and he switches formation to try win and loses.
dom doesnt have a badge to his name and how you can single out tony whitehead from the 19,s baffles me the likes of darrah rainsford and new addition val feeney for me could step up given a chance.. also when kerley went to waterford they wer already in big trouble as for athlone sacking him the results after he departed summed that one up and he had a bunch of kids play more football than our bunch of highly paid management team and players...
Dom's doing his UEFA B badge currently as far as I know.
As for picking out Tony Whitehead, you should go watch the 19s. Tony could be a decent squad member, but that's it at the moment. Time is on their side as I said in my previous post "CURRENTLY not good enough"
And "highly paid management team and players"? I didn't realise you saw the payslips. People vastly overestimate the money some people at the club are on. The only reason some of them have joined is because their wages are guaranteed, not because they are earning thousands a week.
My biggest problem with him from an outside opinion (i dont know him, could be the nicest bloke in the world) would be that line "good coach, poor man manager" that people who have worked with him throw out. Can't really afford to be in premier and have any aggro behind the scenes. Plus, it's not a great look for the club after all the big talk of Phil Brown and that, to then bring back a manager who's walked away twice... It doesn't seem like a step forward to me.
I dont think when people say that they mean he is the kind to cause trouble. I know Mike and he is a nice fella but a bit kinda starnge is the best way to describe it not great at communicating very very quiet man which isnt great for a manger. Im sure someone else that knows him will describe what i mean better.
I kind of worded that poorly to be fair, I don't mean he'll deliberately cause trouble, but at that the level of professionalism that Gamble, Bradley et.al would expect, surely a bit of aggro will happen if he can't communicate with them.
And if he is an assistant, you'd imagine then the possibility that if he can't act as a link between the squad and the manager then there could be problems. Maybe I'm just being too negative and seeing problems there, but I'd hate for the team to go up and just struggle along for the year or for it to all fall apart.
Na dont think you are being too negative at all valid point in fairness. Id just hope that if he was assistant that whoever was manger was the talking type that players could go to. Id hope that Mike just turned up did his training and that was it cos that is all he is suited to imo. Perfect scenario for me would be Manger, someone like Tommy Barrett as assistant and Kerley as a coach. I think they need Kerley as assistant over having the badges though.
don't know any of the details of how Kerley's previous stints ended but I always thought we played good football under him, which would be a nice change. I don't put much stock in his waterford or athlone stints either, he really had nothing to play with there. I'd be happy to see him back. We went on a great run of results for the second half of the season a few years back, just before Scully. I think that was under Kerley too before he walked away. Was a huge blow as I had big hopes for that season. Didn't make sense at the time so I assume there must have been a strong reason.
Limerick 19s are playing carew park today if people want to see a few of those names talked about carew will be without the lads playing Oscar trainer.
It was definitely Tommy and Mike anyway that were seen but its not as manager and assistant unfortunately what it is for would suggest we wont have a manger anytime soon.
What was it for? The academy? Or are they trying to get some training going? If its the latter, it was just the 2 of them there. Unless players were still in dressing room or something? Any idea? I only drove past quickly but didnt see anyone else there...
Also, no update on manager? What about the story that the contract was signed before Christmas and they were waiting to announce?! The longer it goes on, the less enthusiastic I am about the season.
First i heard the other day from someone that wouldn't talk bull that he had it from a good source that the manager was in place already. I was told tonight though that Mike and Tommy have been asked will they take pre-season until the club can get a manager, bit of a joke imo if we dont have a manger before pre season starts. Id guess that it was just the 2 of them there doing a bit of planning or something. But they have 100% been asked to take pre sesaon til the club can find a manger.
My thoughts... That's a shambles! With guys holding off on signing until they know who the manager is, and only 6 players signed, I am very worried about the season ahead if we don't have a manager before pre season. I was talking to a mate of mine this morning who's related to 1 of the players, he said it was a training session. They found out the night before about it and no one showed up... (Various reasons like no contracts, some think Mike is a step back from Scully, poor organisation, away for Xmas and so on) Now, take some of the excuses with a pinch of salt, but if true, that isn't good at all.
Very frustrating if no manager is in place yet. There is only so long people will say give the club time to get the right man in etc... Going into pre-season is too late. Scully has been sacked since the 14th of November so taking nearly two months to find a manager is really dragging it. If they get a good manager in in the next few weeks I'm sure everyone will be happy but if we end up resorting to throwing anyone in for the sake of it because time is running out it will be a disaster. I know if I was a player with offers elsewhere and there was no sign of a manager or an exact idea of who else was signing or when training was starting and so on I'd probably sign for someone else.
could not believe carew destroyed them that easily with half a team out (Oscar trainer) was very disappointed couple of good players rainsford and anto o donnell were good but as for putting them into senior squad not a chance. There young lads so hopefully they kick on and learn.
Just because the lads have been asked that doesn't mean there is no hope of a manager before pre-season i would imagine but the fact that they have even had to been asked is a joke. I wouldn't blame any lads if they didn't bother with excuses and just told em to f off why should they bother turning up risking injury for people that have given them no indication if they will be signed or not. We are taking a huge step up from the first division and a good pre season is vital in a season like that. Could definitely lose a few of the better players if we have nothing by pre-season and as much as some people would pretend that isnt a problem there isn't that much out there to replace the likes of O'Leary and Gaffney.
Who were Carew missing? All i noticed was Grant and Pa Boyle. Played some nice football Limerick defence was a bit of a joke though i hope that centre back isn't Tony Whiteheads natural position cos if it is he is 100 miles away from being good enough for first team.
Just you wait and see, they couldn't get a manager for the money they were offering, and little or no money for players,so it will be as you were, that's if last seasons squad sign on again,I'd say there's a lot of lads p****d off with the way the current situation is,and who could blame them.
First time I've agreed 100% with1 of your posts, you went and ruined it all then by saying you'd give them the job now and let them start signing people ;)
In all seriousness though, I wouldn't let either of them at it. It's a recipe for disaster. Players like O'Leary/ Gaffney won't sign (because its not progress on the clubs part) I could see Gamble or Bradley trying to leave (and who'd blame them, not exactly professional standards they were promised)
As it stands, a few weeks before pre season should be starting and there's no one in place, no team, no management or staff.
What about Declan Farmer? He's worked with the players before, they know him, he's already at the club...surely that should have been the most logical person to put in there for a few weeks.
The fact i want them to get it is just a sign of how desperate i think things have gone. Your right the likes of O'Leary and Gaffney might not sign for them but then again if its not them will O'Leary and Gaffney still be around by the time we do have a manger i wonder.
I think it says a lot about what the club think of Farmer the fact that his assistant with the under 19s was picked ahead of him to help out with the senior team. I dont know what Farmer is like or anything myself just think they must not rate him too highly to pick his assistant ahead of him.
Edit: Im probably reading too much into it and its just the fact that Tommy would know the lads and would know Mike well.
Good point, your damned if you do and damned if you don't. Another thing my mate said to me this morning is that the players are clueless to what's going on. None of them have heard anymore on contracts or anything.
I still think Farmer would be a better fit just to get things organised, players know how he works, he could have organised a session and just get them in a gym or something. It would look a million times better than organising a session and no one being there.
Also, Tommy really only knows the old limerick heads, paddy, calla, Tracy and Judge...can't imagine gamble, Bradley, Behan or Foley would be too receptive to him.
I just can't believe the club didnt have someone lined up before they sacked Scully.
Any of them that i have spoken to have said the same, as you can imagine none are too pleased about it. I don't really know what the club could say to em but surely they could say something at this stage even just a quick phonecall to say things are moving along with search for manger we will be back in touch soon.
Exactly that, a quick phone call just to keep them in the loop. By comparison, Cork have had their squad in the gym since mid November, Rovers have been doing a few days a week as well since the start of December I believe.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a few of them heading to Norway in January with Scully and the PFAI team.
speaking to one of the players lastnight, and he was saying that most of last years squad looking elsewhere for offers. its gone on too long, with no communication at all between club and players.
Why hasn't the manager been selected, why the delay anyone?
rumor has it the club are in talks with someone else in the UK now, all to be revealed by the weekend, also heard club not too bothered about signing players until then as UK players are probably cheaper than loi players are, i wouldn't be too sure about this plan but hopefully im proved wrong,
Exactly... They might get them on loan, but then you have a situation where their own club will want them full time, so are the club going to get a full time Physio, sports scientist, psychologist and coaches for those players?
I think the club look so far out of touch with reality at the moment. I heard they set pre season to start in the 2nd week of Jan... Won't look great with 6 players showing up.
but sure you'll be in Markets Field any day now.... then you'll get a manager... then sign players....
