A bit left field but what would people think about giving it to Bernd Schuster? He has managed all over the place and has applied for a few premier league jobs at different times according to reports so he might be interested in coming to this part of the world.
O'Neill: "We need to start again, thinking about younger elements and trying to blood them through."
No duh but easier said than done. Who for example?
McDonnell makes some very salient points in this article about how short and medium term financial obligations are driving the FAI plus the necessity of qualifying for the next Euros. Doesn't create a very optimistic picture for youth been given a chance or for any risks to be taken on the field.

Somewhat off topic but on the subject of managers I note the USA failed to qualify, finishing 5th in their group!
(And you thought we were bad!).
Actually 4th out of 6 gets you to the play-offs so somewhat easier than the European side of it.
Actually that was in the final stage of qualify so not as bad as it sounds but the are out same as us and their coach has quit.
So he will be looking for a job but I guess he is not one we would be too keen on! ;)
Pity really as I like to follow the US progress at the World Cup and hear how the "offence" is doing etc....

Someone with a close connection to God would be useful, problem is he died 1776, which rules him out I guess.
We should move away from human mangers and switch to a computer, artificial intelligence is the future.
So it basic scans the web reads reports and stats and make selection based on that.
Worth giving it a go.
Bert van Marwijk.
Although, after getting the Saudis to the WC, they were unable to agree a new contract and he left.
If the Saudis weren't prepared to pay him more, then we're probably not going to be able to afford his wage demands.
Maybe he just wants rain .
I’d have Big Sam in a heartbeat. It’d also pi$$ off Dunphy so another tick for me. I didn’t know about the season ticket stat - just confirms my suspicion that the FAI have to have a ‘name’ from now on.
I like Keane but if he got the gig it would just overshadow the team as a whole. His press conferences would generate a lot of interest, get a lot of clicks on websites and sell some more season tickets but it’s not what we need right now.
Coyle, O’Leary etc no thanks.
Would keeping MON sell more season tickets?
I think a lot of people have had enough of O'Neill and I'd expect the sale of season tickets to fall.
If O'Neill stays in charge, I wouldn't be too sure if I'd bother renewing next season.
I think most people are somewhere between being happy enough if O'Neill calls it a day and wanting him to go.
Is there anyone who positively wants him to remain and would be disappointed if he went?
I'm completely in the middle. The alternatives haven't got me excited. And that's irrelevant because we can't consider replacements until he makes the decision. The media's narrative is that the ball is firmly in his court. Reneging on the verbal agreement is only possible on his side.
The issue with alternatives is that it's plainly apparent that O'Neill has managed to embed a strong spirit in this group. In terms of tactics, sometimes he hasn't been impressive (ignoring style of play arguments, I'm referring to effectiveness- maybe they should go hand in hand though). In terms of youth development, he has mostly been less than impressive.
Who can bring a balance of all 3? All 3 are probably integral for international football. Hughton would probably provide the best balance but I think that's more of a pre-retirement aspiration of his. It's a pity Brian McDermott's career has petered out.
