He said: "I have played with Wayne a few times now. He is a great player who likes to get a lot of touches on the ball.
"In that sense he is similar to Robbie Keane and my partnership with him is great. I don't mind staying behind a main striker, that's for sure."

Poor enough game but scored yet again. Great header and never took his eye off the ball even though he knew he'd be clattered by the keeper.

Strangely enough this goal won't be counted by the anti-Keane brigade because it's not against one of the major world powers :rolleyes:

Quiet performance but what is Keane there for, to score goals. 40 at this stage, what a legend, we'd be lost without him. What is it they often say about great strikers, that you barely know they are on the field for the 90 mins but the one chance they get, bang goal.

I think his link up play could be alot better but on the same note the service he gets from the wings should be alot better considering the quality of our wide men.

Ah but when he does score against the world champions people are happy to write it off because sure he was only against 10 men, how he didn't score at least two is a disgrace...

Not only did he score the vital goal (yet again) but I thought his link-up play wasn't bad considering just how much ball was being lumped up the pitch towards him which he could do little with. One lovely turn on the edge of the box in second half, and then a terrific downward header for Whelan's effort.

Also, I think Robbie's goal last night takes him to joint 3rd in the scorers chart, along with Soren Larsen, Wayne Rooney, David Villa and Blaise N'Kofo of Switzerland.

One word to sum up the lad. I had a feeling last night would be comfortable. It was anything but. What a cross by Duff and so well taken by Robbie.

I haven't been his biggest fan over the years, but he did very well on scraps last night and he never let his head drop which has sometimes been a problem in the past.

Thought he tried too many little flicks at times rather than getting a hold of the ball and being strong, but as has been said we'd be lost without him.40 goals at international level is sensational, especially when u consider what our record was before he came along.He has a lovely habit of popping up with a goal when we need it most

seems to be the theme of this campaign, where keane is atrocious in general play and still manages to get goals...fair play to him...but man of the match...what???

his best game play wise was montenegro away...every game he scored in in he was having a howler..but hats of he is a legend..40 goals for ireland ..terrific stuff

shouldn't be captain, but will probably go down in history as the best striker we've ever had, nobody comes close in my opinion. keep it up robbie. he always gives 100% in every game. if he got injured we wouldn't qualify

I'm quite happy with Robbie as captain. Shay, Richie Dunne and others also provide leadership on the pitch but Robbie hasn't done anything wrong as captain in my view.

With regard to his performances during this campaign the goals obviously speak for themselves. However, I do think it is harsh to criticise him too much in a game like last night's where long high balls were being thrown up to Kevin Doyle and himself. Robbie has never been a target man of that type - he's a player who thrives on the ball being played into his feet and like any other striker he can only perform if he is given decent service.

Look back at the game in Bari in April - for my money he was the most influential player on the pitch, especially when he was pulled back into midfield - collecting the ball from the defence and trying to create openings in the packed Italian defence.

i just think the captaincy puts extra pressure on him. he's aready under enough pressure coz he knows if he doesn't score then no-one ele will. just think given should be captain in my opinion. i admire robbie keane though, he gets way too much criticism, if he wasn't in the team we'd be rubbish

only noticed today that Henry has 49 goals for France, in 112 games. A goal every 2.2 games
Robbie has 40 in 92 games, which works out as a goal every 2.3 games, in a far worse team (yes France are better than Ireland, accept it)

By that measure, David Healy is the new Pele. All those stats tell us is that they're all good strikers.

I always think if Owen or Rooney had scored 13(?) in one campaign like Healy we'd never have heard the end of it.

Healy's record always baffled me somewhat since he never cut it at Fulham or Sunderland, I mean even Daryl Murphy a player who can't get anywhere near our squad is higher on the pecking order than NI's all time greatest striker.

He must turn it on big time on the international stage because he's a different player for NI than he is at club level.

His record is remarkable. He has not and will not crack the Premioer League nut, I think he might do well on the continent.

Another amazing return of goals per game at international level was Davor Suker with 45 goals from only 69 games.
A lot of them against tops sides, including Ireland :D
Maybe I am doing him a misjustice but IIRC he was a player that did nothing most of the game but more often than not managed to sneek a goal from 5 yards or less.

Because you guys are on the training ground and in the dressing room? In practically all cases it is impossible for anybody outside of the club/team to make a judgement on who should be captain.

Fair enough, but usually all I see him doing on the pitch is moaning and waving his arms about. Someone like Dunne is seen shouting instructions to the other players all match.

He does run his ass off and get the odd goal too.... He captain of his club too, think I would trust Harry Redknapps and Traps judgement on it a little bit more than yours

Don't get me wrong, I love Robbie. He's our best player. You must admit he's a bit of a moaner though.

i think this moaning talk and arm waving is totally exaggerated. hes captain so hes entitled to query decisions. anyway he can dig holes in the ground with a shovel mid game for all i care. hes quality. QUALITY.
