Met Con a few times -didn't know him but had a few chats - my favorite was Barca v ManU in 1994 when Barca with Romario and Stoichkov and Bakero gave Roy Keane and Pallister and Bruce a chasing
Con was on the trip and upon landing headed straight for the bar, where he was fed and watered for the day. He wrote his column in long hand sitting at the bar and faxed it off to the Press.
His column the next day was remarkable - he talked about touring the hills, the locals, the natives, the small villages, the local seanchai and the history seeping from the hills outside Barcelone and how captivated by the atmosphere
A legend
I used to love reading Con on the back of the Evening Press I think it was. However, following Jack's first game in charge when we lost at home to Wales he wrote a scathing piece about him and how it was a wrong appointment, which piece I kept because I suspected Jack would be a success having regard to how he turned the fortunes of Sheff Wed around. Following on Italia 90 I wrote to Con reminding him of his article but I never got a reply :)
A truly great sports writer.
American composer Marvin Hamlisch died the other day aged 68. Won 3 Oscars and composed some really well known film pieces.

Phylis Diller passed away overnight - met the lady in Canada years ago and she was hilarious. She was shooting a movie or tv series (I think it may have been Cole Harbour or maybe a Montgomery adaptation) but she was in a downtown restaurant in Charlottetown and held court. I thought I heard them say she was in her 90's so she'd have at least been in her late-70's then. Really funny voice. I don't know if she worked much recently but I'm sure someone more clever than I can say if she did.
Tony Scott, film director and brother of Cameron, died the day before yesterday in a suicide. Heard an obit on the BBC world news last night, very impressive c.v.
Apparently he had terminal brain cancer (Tony Scott).
Sergei Ovchinnikov, the coach of the Russian women's volleyball team, committed suicide today. Now he's not a household name even in Russia, but the circumstances surrounding his death seem to be the oddest. One respected media outlet claims he was severely depressed after a poor showing in the Olympics, another that he was about to be outed for dong something wrong, another that he had been given a terminal diagnoses while RT reported that he was under pressure from "criminal elements" over gambling debts. While it might not mean much in the long run, this was a guy who was gregarious, funny and a great interviewee. Only 43 and one of the better sports coaches in the country.
