And now The Indo gives Westwood the right of reply. There is so much of 'stating the bleeding obvious' in both articles!

Tbf, they now have two average/mediocre keepers now.
Might be biased  but Westwood, just shades it for me...
I think Westwood is better than Mannone and if he gets a run and stays injury free will become a decent enough keeper by EPL standards.
Can't blame him for either of today's goals. Good to see him going up for Sunderland's corner in injury time - you don't see that enough these days.
He was very assured under the many crosses that went in also. Looked to be playing with confidence. I think Westwood over Forde is a no-brainer really when they're both playing regularly.
Westwood was replaced by Mannone on 43 minutes today during Sunderland's 1-0 defeat to Hull due to a head injury. Didn't see the incident myself, but I don't imagine it will keep him out of any further action.
Transpires it was Paul McShane who "could have killed" Westwood, according to Poyet, who expressed his discontent with the refereeing: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/foo...underland.html
Quote:
Sunderland boss Gus Poyet was furious at referee Andre Marriner’s decision to send off Lee Cattermole, while failing to punish Hull’s Paul McShane for a challenge that 'could have killed' goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.
...
His feeling of injustice was aggravated by the fact McShane was not penalised for his collision with Westwood, which left the Irishman groggy and unable to continue.
Poyet accepted there was no malice in the challenge but gave a colourful account of the danger involved. Asked about the dismissals, he said: 'Cattermole no, Dossena yes.
'I would love the ref to talk. If I was a pundit working today - and I was during the summer when I was out of work - I would ask the technical people to show the tackle on Westwood that nearly cut his head off, the one on Adam Johnson (by Robbie Brady) and the one from Lee Cattermole and let the pundits comment on them.
'They need to comment on all the tackles. I’m not accusing McShane at all: I think he played the ball and he was late but he nearly killed him and he is injured and he is out and I need to change my goalkeeper.
Westwood is lucky that Gary Kelly is no longer the goalkeeping coach. Kelly was clearly unimpressed by how Westwood withdrew from the last squad.
Alan.
Yes, sorry
Total accident. You'd think McShane tried to shoot him the way Poyet has been going on.
He wasn't even on the bench, was he?
No. A 19 year old called Jordan Pickford was sub keeper. Strange, surely must have been carrying a knock.
Should be available for Sunderland's next game according to Poyet.
Might need operation according to Poyet.

could be serious, some reports are saying he might miss the rest of the season: http://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/spor...ason-1-6351945
Thescore.ie is saying he'll miss 3 months which effectively means season over for him. Unlucky.
Poyet more or less said he's out for the season.

Sunderland have signed Ustari (Argentine goalkeeper) for the rest of the season on loan. Hopefully Poyet views him as a stop-gap for while Westwood is out.
I think I wrote a few months back that Westwood had nothing to worry about wrt Mannone. He made awful howlers against West Ham and others when at Arsenal, and looked all at sea in other games. But I was very impressed with him last night, and not just the penalties - his open play goalkeeping was very solid and commanding. I think it's hard for keepers to wear the jersey at a big club with high expectations, but Mannone has made the Sunderland jersey his own and fair play to him. We won't see Westwood back in that shirt anytime soon, even after his recovery.
Mannone has been pretty faultless since getting into the team from what I have seen. It's really just not happening for poor Westwood, all the more reason I would welcome Given back with open arms should his form continue.

Linked with a switch to Leicester.
Vito is starting to look more and more like the Arsenal version these times.
Here it is:

I've seen worse. Not in the Patrick Bonheur league.
If that happened to canny Schmeichel, he would have been doing a rain dance on an alleged loose sod and harangue the slow motion defender, none of that self recrimination stuff.
Just heard Jeff Stelling say that Mannone won the Sunderland player of the year award.
Sunderland player of the year awards
I told you he'd be rubbish.
To be honest, I think you were vindicated towards the end of the season, very shaky with a howler or two thrown in for good measure.
Released by Sunderland.
Welease Westwood.
I fancy he will go to Celtic if they flog Fforester(or however you spell it)
Better for him to find a new side than be stuck behind Mannone for another year. Hopefully this isn't a sign his injuries have become chronic.
Probably a good move financially, but he will spend a lot of time removing splinters from his backside!
