Massive appointment for the FAI. I'd imagine that every Tom, Dick and Harry will be looking to "support" the team via sponsorship and what not.
As a fan, I think this is by far the best appointment we could ever of hoped for. We need somebody that can organise the defence and stop the conceding of sloppy goals at the end of matches. Trapattoni is the most qualified man to sort this out for us.
He is also versed in Italian football (obviously :D) so this surely gives us a fighting chance in the games against Italy.
He is a massive name in World football and he demands respect from our players. The appointment signals ambition and shows a belief in our players.
I hope Trapattoni can also offer advice/input to grassroots development - his input here would again be invaluable.
I don't think his appointment is a guarantee of success but it is an appointment that gives us the best chance of success.
Welcome Mr. Trapattoni - you have made my day.
Fantastic News ...............:):):)
Were on our way to SA!!
Great point, Delaney realises that while they may be paying a great deal for him in wages and his backroom staff he knows that to have a man of his fame will only help when renegotiating sponsorship deals!
Im over the moon with this news, he's not guaranteed to do well but at least for once we are giving ourselves the best chance!
no comparison really.
The Press Conference will be streamed live on www.fai.ie from 5pm approximately.
I have to buy Trap's book now.
Doubt I'll be able to watch the conference. This is one of the few sites my job doesn't have blocked.
Honestly we have such a good chance now with trap.
Im tired of not qualifying for major tournments.
Please God let it be a successful campagin and learn me how to spell
So he can definitely speak English? If so I'm 100 percent happy with the appointment.
The Austrian season (the league fixtures anyway) end on May 16th:

anyone else filled with hope! "trapattack"
trap has said he sees no reason why ireland cant top the group ahead of italy! thats what we need!
good man for once we have an optimist. thank god for that. even if he is wrong at least he is optimistic.
http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2008/0213/ireland1.html you can hear him speak in the press conference at the end of the page
I have to say that Im feeling rather excited in my pants
anyone think it was absolute class on his part by announcing his arrival before the muppets held their press conference - talk about letting them know who's boss
over the moon with this appointment - and not a cloud in the sky to spoil the view

By far the most qualified and succesful manager ever to take the reigns of the national team.
Here's hoping this appointment sets the standard required for future managers too.

Georgia play Northern Ireland in a friendly at Windsor Park on March 26 and Trapattoni's native country, Italy are being lined up as the opposition in August, a month before the World Cup qualifying campaign gets under way.
Trapattoni may even make an appearance at Windsor Park himself next month with the Republic not on international duty that night
Can't believe this is really happening...just saw him on SSN holding Ireland scarf aloft...GET IN THERE!!!!:D:ball:
Excellent appointment by far the best manager we could have got, still feel a bit sick though had a wad of cash on venables to be the next boss after i heard a vicious rumour he was a cert for the job
As delighted as I am with this appointment, we haven't achieved anything yet. Let the guy get on with the job and see how he goes. I believe however that if we don't get at least play off then the problem lies else where in the Irish set up, not at management level.
Time wasters needn't apply: What I like most about the calibre of manager we now have is it shows we will no longer tolerate second rate managers looking for a pension or stepping stone to bigger and better thigs.
And it also shows the folly of picking Derby over Ireland Mr. Jewell!!!:D
So failte agus adh mor ort Giovanni.
What do we talk about now?
So who's organising our Irish fans weekend away to Austria to support Trap and our new favourite team Red Bull Salzburg? :)
Great news, over the moon, hope Trapers can bring back the good times:):):)
Just seen his interview on Sky, not bad English at all, amazing how much rubbish is reported.
Former Italy defender Claudio Gentile was also expected to be part of the backroom staff.
But the 54-year-old, who played alongside Brady under Trapattoni, and was Italy Under-21 boss during his mentor's reign as national coach, has declined the offer.
feck!
Forza Irlande..great news..bit offputting reading some people on here getting a semi......maybe I am excited in a diferent way to them
Que Sera Sera
