It seems to be 50-50 as to who is making a bigger farce of the process - the media or the FAI ? leaks should be controlled a bit better. The only statement to come from FAI should be when the appointment has been made. The selection commitee thing should never have been mentioned until they had people in place. It was pure smokescreen to divert attention away from delaney for the staunton disaster.
I don't have a problem with him, I'm just asking why is he involved in the process? He has retired prematurely before (regardless of the reasons) and will do well to feature by the end of the next campaign. I would have said the same about Stephen Carr if he had been included. None of the players should have been consulted. Its up to them to perform for the manager chosen, not for them to have an input in to who this person is.Quote:

Am not one to blame the media for everything but in this case I think they are adding to a sense of farce. I dont mind opinion pieces on the merits or demerits of the respective canditates. Its the "an FAI insider says...." pieces that do my head in.
Dion Fanning is the most culpable for the whole "insider" lark. He's being going on and on and on about Venables with no good reason. Its almost as if the more he goes on about it the more likely the FAI will be to consider Venables.Quote:

The problem is that Fanning is not even a football fan. He does not have a clue. How the Sunday Independent is the biggest selling newspaper I will never know.
agree about fanning, youd swear he put a load of cash on it...he even dismissed the houllier possibility as a laughable suggestion...he deffo has an agenda somewhere along the line...
If venable does get appointed and it does go pear shaped, then fanning will have alot of egg on his face...

I think its funny that people on here get annoyed about things that have not even happend. However I have read in a number of places that, although Venables did suggest 3-5-2 against Croatia, he wanted Rio Ferdinand to play as the sweeper. He was overruled by McLaren who went 3-5-2 but with John Terry as sweeper!
I've read a number of articles from Rio Ferdinand where he has praised Venables for giving him sound tactical advice and making him a better player.
I am well aware of Venables failings and I would rather see Roy Hodgson get the job. However, my worry about Venables if he was appointed wouldn't be his coaching ability (it's hard to find a top class player who he has worked with who doesn't rate him as a coach).
I think that, in fairness, the England debacle was much more McLaren's fault than Venables. He is a top class coach and, frankly, not suited to being a number 2 (especially to an inferior manager). Towards the end, as I understand it, he was largely "frozen out" by McLaren with little or no input.
I'd be more concerned about his commitment and, if the going gets tough, will he just look for a payoff and go back to his comfortable life as a TV pundit?
