i've booked into the Hotel Wartburg because a friend who works in the FAI sales department has said the squad are staying there. Stan was bamboozled to get a twin room for 70 euros a night near an Irish pub and the main square :eek:

Steer clear of the "Irish" bars. They conveniently put their prices up when Ireland are in town. Local bars cheaper and better craic.

Especially as a case (20 8 0.5l bottles) of good quality German pilsner costs about �14 in off licences and supermarkets. You can get even cheaper beers for about �9 a case.

not always the case to be fair. Irish bar in basel both times was great as there were as many swiss there both times as Irish. also, many Irish bars in Tokyo actually reduced their prices around wc time to attract Irish fans in. saw video of match v germany when we arrved back to our local Irish bar afterwards. were there till 6am watching it and atmosphere and craic was great... doubt too many non-Irish bars were showing re-runs that night.
having said that its not a bad idea to sample the local bars also

having said that its not a bad idea to sample the local bars also

agree .. use the offos and local bars to get you going but the irish bars in the end are the best crack .. basel was quality both times in the irish bar.

Was that the Irish Angel Bar (in the Shinjuku district I think)? It was down some steps into a little shopping Arcade. If it's the same place, and it sounds like it is, we had some great nights in there, especially that one.

The way I see it on away trips is that if I'm passing a pub and it looks like good craic I don't care if it's an Irish bar or a locals bar, either way I'm going in.

yes, was angel bar. in there every night more or less. watching the japanese matches there was particularly good. not much room for Irish those nights!!

Yeah I was in there a lot myself. It was a bit like the Fawlty Towers of pubs. I remember the manager coming out and apologising to us about our food taking so long because the chef was drunk again. When that would shut we used to go around the corner to a tiny little bar where there would be loads of people from every corner of the globe standing outside having a few beers and a laugh. Naturally there were always a few Irish left when that place shut at 6 or 7am so we went further up the road again to what I'm pretty sure was a gay bar. Ah memories.

A bar is a bar is a bar!! Step Inn Cyprus was great, Buzz Bar Israel fab open 24/7, mind you Irish Bar in Ikubukuru (think thats how you spell it) was a major major rip off and f***** all out early each night, found great local bar in tokyo, poured our own spirits every night and owner gave all the irish a present when we left for korea, she even stayed up till 8am to wave us off in taxis to tokyo airport.. and only 400 yen a drink ..now that was great value...ps san marino is a tax free zone, booking it in morning with BA €255 to Bologna and 4 star hotel €90 per room per night

Not the class of hotel the squad usually stay in. More likely to be Le Meridian, the Steigenberger Graf Zeppelin or the Am Schlossgarten.

Just out of interest where does it say its 70 Euros a night Is that 70 Euro each as the room rates on the site dont say 70 Euro per room for a twin room.

Anyone who believes that Gerry McMahon can guarantee match tickets is mad. When we played France a couple of years ago, tour operators such as Stephen's Green Travel and Abbey Travel advertised saying they had match tickets. When I contacted them, they told me that they would not be held accountable if they didn't get hold of match tickets. Stay well clear of McMahon Travel.

The only Irish Travel Agent that can guarantee away end tickets is Treacy. Frankly I think you'd be far better off dealing with the touts and far cheaper to book your own trip an dtake your chances with the touts than book with an Agent.

Haven't seen anyone mention it already so may as well say that there is a German Wine Festival on the weekend of the match in Stuttgart, begins August 30th to September 10th

See my post 166 above. I looked up hotels on the rail website and there were a good lot available, but that was last week. There are plenty of websites suggested in this thread and I presume you've tried them

Just on the Gerry McMahon offer - they told me that tickets are guaranteed but not with the Irish fans - still think it's about �250 too expensive though but if people can afford it then good luck to them

Exactly. Tickets have not even gone on sale yet, the fact they are saying they will be home end tickets, just means they'll be doing what any one of us will be doing i.e. trying to source tickets through contacts, friends, work etc... the only differnece being they'll stick a nice 200 euro premium on them.

I agree. Theres excellent value to be had in the city centre hotels, approx 80 euro 3*/4* for a twin room with breakie.

The vast majority of hotels are offering free public transport once you show your room card/key.
