Great bowling and fielding. If they could have got Jayawardene out earlier Sri Lanka might have collapsed.
The important thing is they have given themselves a chance.
Anybody got a decent stream to watch this?
Am using http://www.live-cricket.tv/watch/Cri..._Ireland/flash
But it's a bit crap.
Seconds after I tune in they lose their first wicket:rolleyes:
Malinga is just too good..
He is, but it's more the situation. You can milk him for singles if you're going after the other bowlers, sadly Ireland didn't. Niall O'Brien, having kept brilliantly, cost them the game by not retiring when he did his ankle again. Lost too much momentum at that stage to recover.
It was the middle overs where Ireland lost it. When Sri Lanka were batting they had na good partnership & racked up the runs. On the other hand Ireland struggled in that period.
Malinga always going to pick off the lower order when chasing runs.
Overall very good performance by Ireland & looked comfortable at that level.
Commentators even talking about Niall O'Brien in team of the tournament.
Ireland knew they couldn't get anything from Muralitharan or Mendis and had to go after the seamers during the restricted overs (Malinga would mostly be bowling at the death.) They had limited success early on. Once NO'B realised he couldn't run he tried to go down in a blaze of glory by biffing everything, but sadly didn't succeed. The failure to turn ones into twos or twos into threes at that point cost Ireland the game. He should simply have retired hurt and let his brother come in.
I think Sheridan's right, NOB should probably have retired hurt. But an excllent effort all round by our boys.
I was there (Oval) yesterday, excellent atmosphere. Although a couple of brave India fans got thrown out for winding up the Pakistanis :)
Overall, it is a brave effort, they bowled and fielded excellently, the batting was better than previous games. I think NOB knew that he would probably not be playing tomorrow, so he wanted to continue as it would be his last game.
Todays Game:
Paul Stirling in for Botha
Pakistan 38/1 - 5.4 overs
Shahzaib Hasan 24(19) c McCallan b Cusack
Bet West takes a bit of tap again. Dunno how he's still in the team.
He has struggled somewhat, his bowling looks a bit too slow even if he is a spinner.
He's actually a fast-medium bowler when he bowls seam up!
Maybe he should try that instead :D
Pakistan 78/2 - 9.3 overs
Shahid Afridi 24(13) c Mooney b McCallan
Pakistan 102/3 - 12.5 overs
Younis Khan 10(08) b West
Pakistan 133/4 - 16.5 overs
Kamran Akmal 57(51) b Johnston
Great comeback over for TJ after being flayed in his previous three. Four singles, a wicket and a dot ball.
Yes, very impressive over.
Pakistan 141/5 - 17.4 overs
Misbah-ul-Haq 20(14) c N O'Brien b McCallan
Pakistan 159/5 - 20 overs
About thirty too many for Ireland to realistically chase.
Looks like Johnston/Cusack early overs might just be a costly.
Boyd Rankin's four overs for only 11 runs must be up there with the best in the tournament, OK he didn't take a wicket but that's some economy, went for 9 singles and 1 two.
They do need him to take wickets though, that's why he was dropped for the NZ game.
Ireland 13/1 - 2.3 Overs
N O'Brien 07(10) c & b Amir
Porterfield blocking his usual singles...
Ireland 42/2 - 6.6 Overs
Stirling 17(16) b Afridi
37-1 6 overs.
Can Ireland learn from yesterday & push on for the mid overs...?
Couldn't believe myself when I found myself watching the cricket from the very first day. Have only missed one match out of all of them so far. :o
Suprisingly, not as boring as I taught when I was completely ignorant to the sport.
I think the Test Cricket is what puts people off watching it, the limited over games get good viewers.
Ireland 87/3 - 13.1 Overs
