It's not mistaken identity. It's a subjective call by a referee made in a moment, and he doesn't have the safety net of VAR.

We can complain about the standard of refereeing, but overturning their decision post match, with the benefit of replays, must be demoralising for them.
The only way the situation will improve is by having full time refs. We'll all have to pay for it, but if we have full time clubs, we need full time refs.
Unfortunately also, I think the debate on VAR is lost. We'll probably be made to implement sooner or later. May as well do it now and let the refs get more European game experience.
At the end of the day it was a blatantly incorrect decision. Sligo have already been punished by having to play half the game with 10 men, there’s no point in doubling down on that unjust punishment by having their player suspended for their next game also, just so a referee doesn’t feel demoralised. The Sligo fans and staff will feel a lot more demoralised than McGrath if they go down this seasonQuote:
