It is a shock in my eyes. Saw Bluebell this season, weren't that great but surely Athlone must have a better standard? Still a very good result for them.
I saw it mentioned on Facebook that Athlone players played in the Salthill 5's between the cup games- it's little wonder they were not in the best of shape last night if that is true.
On the general question of standards- we always hear lots about how Intermediate or even Junior teams could hold their own in D1- but when they actually meet in the cup it's usually the D1 side winning at a canter. And I've seen players who tore up intermediate leagues bomb in D1. Others of course make the grade- all clubs have made great finds at times.
Cobh beat Pats CY, Longford beat Pike. Fairly handily too. The LSL (and other junior/intermediate leagues) like to think they'r ebetter than LOI teams, but they're really not. Any team can win a one off but you only have to look at how Salthill, Wexford etc have struggled to amke the step up to LOI football.Quote:

Well, I don't know much about the LSL, but Waterford United put a MSL side to the sword last year in the same run of pre-season games that saw them getting hammered by all other (LOI) opposition.Quote:
