Political Rebel alluded to the same thing on our forum. Is he going on 96?
Roddy would probably know the Viper, he'll be grand.
From the Irish Examiner
I’m retarding progress, says Cork chief Coughlan

TOM COUGHLAN says that the "primary reason" for his stated intention to step down as Chairman of Cork City is to help ensure a viable future for the club.
However, the FAI have described Coughlan’s move as "too little, too late".
Today is deadline day in the club licensing process for next season, although it’s understood that Cork have appealed for an extension which would give them until the middle of next week to supply audited accounts. Club licensing rules require that all outstanding debts – believed to be over €300,000 in Cork’s case – need to be settled today, but in the event that they are not the independent committee could still award City a licence if they are under new ownership by the time the body makes its final decision in the middle of next month.
Late last night, players and staff at the club announced that there will be a press conference this morning in the Maryborough House Hotel at which Coughlan will be asked to "walk away from the club".
Announcing his decision to step down as chairman yesterday, and also confirming that he will relinquish ownership if current takeover talks prove successful, Coughlan told the Irish Examiner: "I’d become a lightning rod for controversy and I don’t want to stand in the way of progress at Cork City. I’ve made a huge personal and financial sacrifice and committed a lot of time and energy to the club but, at this stage, I’m retarding progress and I think the best thing I can do is step down."
Confirming the news, the club released a statement saying that it would shortly appoint an interim chairman to oversee the proposed takeover of the club and ensure its strategic development.
However, the FAI – who have repeatedly called for Coughlan to step aside – seemed distinctly unimpressed by the latest development. In a statement the association said: "Rather than talking of stepping down as chairman of Cork City FC, Mr Coughlan should immediately relinquish ownership of the club and allow in the parties who have expressed an interest in taking Cork City forward. These parties made their interest clear to Mr Coughlan many months ago, yet nothing has happened. Gestures at the 11th hour when it could be too late to rectify next season are too little, too late."
Coughlan’s announcement came a day after he lost in his High Court effort to overturn a 12-month FAI ban.
Ahead of today’s club licensing deadline, Coughlan said officials at Cork City were "working ‘round the clock to ensure everything is in order" but he also said that any proposed takeover could take a couple of weeks to finalise. The takeover talks involve a consortium headed up by businessman Michael O’Connell with input from Jim McCarthy of the finance management company Quintas.
"This isn’t going to happen overnight," Coughlan said yesterday, "but I’m hopeful that the interim chairman will be able to bring the takeover to a successful conclusion."
Commenting on the failure of his legal challenge to the FAI ban, Coughlan said that he had to accept the decision of the High Court.
"I still can’t fathom the severity of the penalty after I’ve worked 24 hours a day and eight days a week since I took over at the club," he said. "Bemused would be the best way to sum up my feelings. To me, it was a populist move by the FAI. The structures of the league are the problem, not just Tom Coughlan."
Coughlan said that, with a streamlined budget, he believed the club was in a "healthy situation" going in to the season and added that he would depart Turner’s Cross having given his best to the club.
Press conference 10.30 am by players and staff who will demand Coughlan steps down.
There are claims they'll go on strike if he doesn't.
Should have happened months ago.
You can follow it on www.96fm.ie on the Neil Prendeville show this morning.
If I were a Cork fan I'd be rather worried. No doubt Roddy's hand is in this somewhere, he's plugging friends in Dublin to rustle up cash to take a controlling share of his club now that his "Russian backers" have been found not to have returned any of his calls.
I'm tempted to feel sorry for Tom but for his 3 card trick mentality. This is a completely GUBU situation.
Players and staff issued a statement giving 10 grounds for wanting Tom out now.
some of which are
- constantly reneging on payments to players and staff
(Players now have no wages since Nov14th 2009 and some staff are owed wages since July 2009.)- club doctor not paid in over 2 years
- alienating sponsors
- constant litigation
never a dull moment, press conference at 10.30.
better late than never.
I agree with you tiktok, Roddy did the same thing in Malta, all these investors lining up to take control. Maybe I misheard, but at the time he was taking over in Malta he brought one of his sidekicks, John O'Connor, with him in "invest", which never happened, and now this same man was down in Cork with him last week. The "Russians" he approached while still in Malta and tried to convince them to join him in Cork, the week BEFORE he left the club (this was one of the real annoyances for the Maltese according to my buddy in HSBC). I just feel he'll still be trying to get a stake somehow, and if he does.....
Interesting on 96fm, the assistant manager there but no Roddy. And staff other than "close associates" of Coughlan.
Players wont play while Coughlan is owner, even if they are paid.
Is that including the players Roddy has brought in/lined up or just the ones already under contract?.
Fair enough. Even Tom has to see sense soon, can't understand why he doesnt just announce that he's agreeable to the takeover pending formalities. Nobody seems to have any idea where he put in all this money.
Probably part of the reason he's so opposed to a due diligence.
Is it true that Meaney [Cork City Licencing Officer as I understand it] publicly admitted on 96FM that the licence application would not be ready for the deadline?
Not exactly the same.
The main difference between Cork and Derry is that the Derry board stood aside and agreed to liquidation (allowing NewCo to be immediately established and purchase the trading name from Wellvan), whereas Tom has kept fighting the FAI's attempts to do the same in Cork.
Also, whilst Derry have shafted the bulk of their creditors, if you want to get into specifics, the paragon of virtue that is Shamrock Rovers came through examinership all shiny and clean, paying its creditors what may well turn out to be less than Derry City will pay back when all told. People seem to have forgotten that.
True, But in the event of liduidation, how you got that far is irrelevant. Obviously it was easier for ye, but the theory of buying the name is the same
What? Who's forgotten that?
Im certainly not lecturing on shafting creditors, we've shafted more people in the last 2 years than most clubs put together.
Certainly the one thing all 3 tree had in common was that they had no assests, otherwise they would never have gone into examinership. Or put another way Monaghan wll never be in that position cause they'd risk losing their ground. Now if they sold their ground, then rented it back and used the proceeds to sign good players and win the trophies then they'd be huge and have no problems.......................................
ummm, why didnt we think of that. Why didnt you suggest that before the AGM last night? Dam you Ronnie.
I cant see us ever going down that route as our Regional Development Centre is what the club have been working towards for years and when the fiinal stages are completed in a few years it will be worth the years in the first division building for the future. And then we can use our hard earned money to pay players big wages and win all the cups possible with a solid base.
The most recent one, so eh the currently best supported team, no?
My mind is boggling at the moment on this.
If I was working for a company and they had not paid me for 2 months there is NO way in hell I would still be there without pay after 6 months. I can understand the players still being there but the staff.
Is it just me or is this gone on too long because the staff also did not take a stand before now.
Dan Murray,Danny Murphy,Dan Connor,Mark McNulty,Stephen O'Donnell and
Paul Deasy have all been suspended by the club for 2 weeks and fined 2 weeks wages for thier part in todays press conference!
How convenient - seems the players are free to walk as havent been paid but obviously want to play for Cork under the right conditions. What do the club do? Find a way (in their eyes) to keep them but not have to pay them.... It
just gets weirder / funnier / and embaressing by the hour - I do feel sorry for Cork fans (and players such as above)
Sure they'll all be leaving soon anyway.
Wow,how many more twists can this whole thing take. The best screen writer's would be struggling to come up with these plot twist's.Its sad, funny, embarassing and stupid all in one.
Agree about the PFAI,they are the players union yet dont seem to be protecting, helping them much.
If the PFAI dont stop all members from training/playing with the club while their colleagues are being treated like this then there's no point to them at all.
They werent even at the press conference this morning ffs.
