Gussie Campbell played for Fortuna somebody or other (cologne?) circa 1970's in the then German second division.
I dont get the cultural difference thing at all..i just think when your brainwashed from such a young age that going to england is the be all and end all it will have an effect....a few of my relatives live in berlin and they adapted easily, no reason why protected footballers cant
It is in reality, but in the minds of Irish kids it seems like going to another planet. At least going to UK doesn't mean that they'd have to learn another language (well maybe in parts of Scotland it would sound that way!).
Plus, heading to the UK (especially to the English Premiership) is the Holy Grail to most Irish kids that play soccer.
you'd wonder if increased coverage of foreign leagues would make them more attractive to irish youngsters? On most nights here you can watch games in England from every division, whereas you can only see Bundesliga games on Setanta Sports 2, and maybe 3 Primera Liga games a week on Sky Sports?
but i think if french scouts came to watch irish players at underrage levels and asked them to join their club, they would. but the only clubs that scout here seems to be english. i think if we kept players here longer, then their horizons would broaden but when you're 15 its difficult to reject chelsea.
havent a few loi players played in norway and perhaps sweden? im sure zayed played in norway for a while.
for the record, theres nothing wrong with going to england, its one of the strongest european leagues, but just from a fans perspective i'd like to see more diversity.
lol talk about diversity

fair play to him like.:)
I pray he is available for both games as he now remain our single attacking weapon. A lot of weight now thrust upon young shoulders. I have no doubt that if fit he will prove the naysayers lurking within the confines of this forum, so called fans??? WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!
..
any update on his injury ahead of match on wednesday. didn't look too bad when he limped off yesterday. would be a huge blow if he was out.
World Cup qualifiers: Aiden McGeady and Shay Given sat out training this morning after the 1-1 draw with Bulgaria at Croke Park, but while the latter was merely rested there is serious doubt over the availability of the Celtic player for the match against Italy in Bari on Wednesday.
Giovanni Trapattoni made a late call on including McGeady last night because the winger had been struggling all week with a bruised right foot. His replacement by Andy Keogh in the 90th minute was the only substitution of the night and came after a heavy challenge left him hobbling.
McGeady left Croke Park icing a knee injury and when questioned on his fitness this morning Trapattoni did not rule him out of the meeting with the world champions but pointedly extolled the virtues of Wolves striker Keogh and Reading's Shane Long. on the right wing.
“Shay Given will be fit I’m sure, but at the moment my only change is likely to be McGeady,” said the manager.
"He had a bit of a knock to the knee and I don’t know,” he continued. “I hope he will be fit but if not then, as I said before, we have Andy Keogh who is in good form and we also have Shane Long."
McGeady’s absence, coupled with that of Damien Duff, would seriously blunt Ireland’s attacking options in Bari, though, as is always the case with Trapattoni, avoiding defeat is the priority against Marcello Lippi’s side.
The Italian was adamant last night there was nothing Kevin Kilbane could have done about his own goal that cost his side two vital points at Croke Park.
Ireland were leading 1-0 and had a top-two finish in Group Eight within their grasp when Kilbane, winning his 94th senior cap, unwittingly diverted Stiliyan Petrov’s driven cross into his own net.
The 74th-minute goal proved enough to secure a fourth successive draw for Stanimir Stoilov’s side, who nevertheless remain seven points adrift of the Republic.
“I don’t blame Kilbane for what happened. It was an accident,” Trapattoni said. “He did not have time to react. He was trying to stop the ball, but there was not much that he could do.”
Captain Robbie Keane and Kevin Doyle both missed good chances in a frantic conclusion, and Trapattoni later admitted a lack of calmness in front of goal had cost his side.
“With a little bit of calm in front of the goalkeeper, we could have scored a goal,” he said. “Doyle had a header in the last minute - okay, he was tired - and Robbie, we had two players in the middle and he shot for goal.
“We were anxious in that situation. We could have scored a goal if we had been calm.
“We need to stay calm in those situations
he didnt play well against Bulgaria but if he is missing for Italy and we are left with Andy Keogh starting on the right wing Im gonna get sick
Seventh time seeing McGeady live and seventh time he's been the worst player on the pitch.
Absolutely rubbish player with no vision and no footballing brain
I'm better than Kilbane and McShane, but I expect more from McGeady (purely from the hype that surrounds him) so I'm harsher on him than I would be on McShane for instance.
That said McGeady is rubbish and I'd be in favour of dropping him if we had any other options on the flanks at all
maybe if we had players around him to give him decent ball rather than paul mcshane constantly hoofing it backwards to either centre back or goalkeeper. Fair enough he missed an absolute sitter, but he barely saw the ball for large parts of the game due to the negative tactics. Cant wait to see how a midfield of hunt andrews whelen and keogh get on against italy, should mcgeady be unfit
Im not the biggest fan of McGeadys and he had a largely ineffective game the other night but I dont think the lad was match fit and apparently he picked up a knee injury that got worse as the game went on. Looks unlikely to feature on wed by the sounds of it.
Just a side note, in the corner of the ground where I was McGeady got a disproportionate cheer when the teams were announced, suggesting the anti-Celtic bias put forward here isn't necessarily the case.
or just a reflection of his recent performances pulling more fans on side.....
He looked like he was carrying an injury on Saturday (pulled out of a tackle late in the first half).
As EAFC says "Cant wait to see how a midfield of hunt andrews whelen and keogh get on against italy, should mcgeady be unfit". We need a fit McGeady. If for nothing else than a bit of hope that he might turn up and play to his full potential.
McGeady does waste an awful lot of good situations but to be fair he gets in these situations more than others. Also he does look for teh ball and awful lot and he does have what giles would call moral courage. He is an out ball and generally keeps a hold of it for longer than most of our players. I think he will be a big loss on Wed night as he has playled in Champions league games away from home and has way more experience than Keogh does and Keogh will be out of position.
Is McGeady frustrating yes but he is better than Hunt or Keogh on the wings. He has worked hard too at tracking back and he does this very well.
soccerrepublic.ie says he has trained since the game. RTE says same and says he's likely to be fit.
i think the main reason mcgeady struggled so much against bulgaria was because of paul mcshane. if you look back over the match, look at the amount of times mcgeady was in the right back position covering for the wayward mcshane. i remember one part of the match just after bulgaria had scored, mshane mis-timed a tackle and the ball was spread across infront of our two centre backs, and instead of reverting to his position and holding the line, mcshane ran across and eventually ended up about 2 yards away from kevin kilbane in the left back position, leaving mcgeady to sprint back to right back to cover. this is ridiculous, you wouldnt get away with that in a park game. o'shea gave mcshane an earful for it but mcshane wasnt having any of it, thats what annoys me most about him, he seems to think he has so much authority and responded by giving o'shea, one of our senior players, an earful. Mcshane out = better performance for the team in general.
Comment from Trap from the Times today:
"I hope he[McGeady] will be fit but if not then, as I said before, we have Andy Keogh who is in good form and we also have Shane Long."
How in the name of god can anyone see those two as wingers is beyond belief.
as trap would probably say il mi dio
Sweet Jesus, that is just madness.Does he not remember how bad Keogh was on the wing against Poland.
As sick as I still am about the performance at the weekend Im doing my best not to go down the route of critising the manager yet, but statements like are whitteling away my confidence
It really is astounding. The one thing I thought that we would not see again from the Staunton era was fitting square pegs into round holes but it's showns its ugly face once again. Unless Trap changes things around on Wednesday (which he has hinted that he won't in the same article) I'll have lost faith in his ability to get us to South Africa.
Ironically enough, I think the fact that Trapattoni has watched the DVDs of the Staunton era has actually given him the idea that certain players can play in the positions that Staunton used them.
This is not to say that he is playing everybody in the wrong positions, but if he had never seen Keogh play on the wing before for his club, would he be willing to do it if he hadn't watched the DVDs?
