i cannot comment on players i personally know little about, but there are other things that have to be brought into consideration. like how do we know hugh hasn't asked other players only to be told NO. (I know some). in fairness to hugh, who has ruffled a few feathers of clubs he has been involved with, attends a lot of matches, all divisions and has a proven track record when it comes to spotting talented players. if they want to play is another matter. 3 years ago you'd have laughed if clare said they'd win the oscar cup. credit where credit is due, mentors done a great job and am sure they'l have a good run this year as well. only time will tell?

cannot argue with his record as oscar traynor manager
would agree on a lot of players have also probally said no but that is there own choice ... some also have not been given a chance
personally i would put it all behind me and play after all you are representing your county and ye should be proud to play for clare :D

When Clare won the Oscar Traynor a couple of seasons ago, there were 4 Kilkishen players in the squad. That's Kilkishen who had just been promoted from the second division. Bridge Celtic are now a premier division team with a few in thwe squad. A couple of months ago they were in the first division with the same set of players except for the goalie. Aere they suddenly good enough to play O.T. while a few months ago they were not???

yeah suddenly.... bridge celtic as a team have come good this year and there players deserve a chance however playing OT is at a higher standard and realyy most players would be lost for the first couple of games... thing is that you only get a 2 or 3 games to qualify so you need best team... as for tom carmody he played up front for clare last year and is a good player however i wouldn't pick him as he doesn't even play up front for inch(centre half) .there are other players out there that are just as good or better and have been playing at a higher level this year. all the same dan ahern played very well for clare last year and he deserves another go..... im just waiting for hugh kelly to blame the players for his shortcomings as a coach/manager like he did last year.... no wonder half the good players in the county will have nothing to do with him

It is okay having a POP at Hugh but lets look at the recent past, he is the ONLY person who wants the Job, I mean who else out there wants it? How many Managers has the Ocscar Traynor Team had in the last 10 years?

Thanks Hacker, I never went away, just been an interested spectator. The thread has changed considerably since last season and with my lack of involvement on the pitch, I haven't had much to contribute (not that what I used to contribute made a whole lot of sense I suppose). However, I felt I had to come in on this one. I think a few guys are being grossly unfair to Hugh Kelly. As has been pointed out, nobody else seems to want to take the job, so what would happen if he opted out? It should not be forgotten either that he is the only manager to bring the OT title to Clare and when he did so, he involved players from all over the county and he scoured every division to find players good enough. Perhaps some of the best players weren't involved, but that was their decision, not his.

Oh come on Plasticpitch. Players don't suddenly become good. Bridge Celtic have had some of the best players in the league for a few years and they certainly didn't come good as a team this season. Anyone who watched their progress would see that they won an extremely tough first division last season and don't forget their run in the FAI. They have practically the same squad this season as last and don't tell me that the likes of Ger O'Connell Daniel Ahearn and David (I think) Hickey aren't good enough for OT. I predicted at the start of this season that they would cause a few surprises in the premier and that was based on what I saw last year. I don't think anyone from Olympic, Mountshannon etc would disagree with me there. As for Hugh blaming the players last season, I think it was built up from frustration more than anything. He was getting little cooperation from players, a lot less from clubs and none at all from the league. I couldn't imagine Dalo putting up with it!!

well oldspice, i can't agree with what you say.. the bridge celtic lads that you mention are definetley good enough to play OT , i think ger o connell was the only player you mentioned not to be part of the squad last year... however my point is on a parallel with kevin doyle for reading... he wasn't good enough to play for ireland when he was at cork but suddenly he was when he moved cross channel and performed well at a higher level...that is my point..... as for Hugh Kelly the set up last year was a JOKE. we trained at 9pm once a week in Shannon... some lads didnt get home till 11.. there was no warm up match for the players to get to know one anothers play... we only trained in Shannon on half pitch(youths on other half... joke for them aswell) and then when we didn't qualify he blamed the players. i thought that was disgraceful. Don't get me wrong i don't have any personal problem with him that needs to be said, this is a football matter!!

I would argue that Kevin doyle was good enough when he was in LOI, he just needed that extra bit of exposure to put him in the picture. I don't argue that playing at a higher level in the Championship hasn't helped his development but he is still basically the same player. Hugh Kelly bucked that trend by deciding there were players in lower divisions good enough to be given a chance and got off his backside to go and have a look at them. In much the same way, I would agree that players in lower divisions, could benefit from playing in the premier and the OT team would be better for it but think about this ... A lot of these players actually enjoy playing for their local clubs and probably wouldn't give as much commitment to somebody else. Anyway, if they were playing in the premier, they might just develop the very attitude that makes some premier players believe that the OT team needs them more than they need it. Finally, from talking to Hugh Kelly, I know that he had much more of a problem with players who weren't there than with those that were. The guy does his best with what's made available to him. Clubs are reluctant to release players be it for friendly matches or for training and some clubs even organise training to clash with OT training. One of the reasons OT get togethers are at such unsuitable times is that he has to accomodate clubs in order to get players to turn up. He doesn't get enough support from the clubs and the League are doing nothing to help his cause.

The problem is not with Hugh Kelly or his managment style its more to do with how the competition viewed in terms of priority by the league, players & clubs. The league have only recently started treating the competition seriously in so far as looking after players properly- gear, meals etc. Players comitment is to their club first & they already devote time at least 3 days a week to the club & dont want another nights training. Players now view the OT weekend as a free weekend & get a chance to go out on a sat night. Players at clubs who traditionaly do well in the league & national cups also view this down the pecking order the OT as 3rd or 4th priority. Clubs dont want players missing training, getting injured or being tired from extra training.
So whats the answer? I dont know & either do any of the other leagues. Just look at their threads ,they have the same problems in Limerick & Tipp:ball:

Looking at past posts,Avenue beat lifford 2 weeks ago in the MJC so their in the other side but i dont know who their against!

Newtown have won 3 draw 2 loose 4 - all by the odd goal bar one game.
Won 3 fai games & 2 MJC games.
no more injuries, full squad now back, plus Davy Wall/Bobby Mc Phillips.

Lets see what happens over the next few weeks.

p.s. league form is immaterial, especially since Olympic are not in the premier div

In fairness Olympic have to be given a chance against both New Market and Newtown. Havent they played three premier teams already and won two of them and drew with the third. I agree that newtown are a different proposition with Davy wall, and would expect them to come just about through against new market. Newtown have some other very good young players unfortunatley I cant name them maybe someone from Newtown can hepl there.

What gives you the impression that newtown won't be up for it?? On the back of an impressive 3-1 win against reinnanna rvs. newtown will definitely be up for it. and last time newtown played newmarket with what was a depleated newtown squad newtown won 4-1.

Mike Omalley is a fine player and when he is up against most centre midfielders you would back him, however Davy is a different class. Newmarket should get somone else to man mark Davy. That might allow mike influence the game a bit. Even so I cant see Newtown losing.
