The middle of May is where it starts in earnest and Wexford were available at 14/1 to 20/1
Paul Galvins suspension was upheld in his sencond appeal. Some disgrace getting suspended for the year for knocking a book out of the referees hand.
next to striking an official i believe that this is as bad an offence that he could have committed. He also has got a well established track record. In my opinion there was no better player to make an example of.I am a big soccer supporter myself but i believe one of the big weaknesses of the sport is the way that players react to officials decisions. The gaa has to draw a line in the sand and though a few players have to be made an example of so be it.In the mayo/sligo match I believe that mortimer and ohara should have been sent off for their attitudes towards officials
seanfhear i agree with ye there completely.
dont know how i missed this earlier but...
When a Connacht team last played a leinster team in the AI Semi Final 2006, which team won .....??? (a connacht team beat a leinster team in the minor as well)...Connacht teams have contested 6 AI Finals (3 Galway, 3 Mayo) since Dublin won the AI in 1995, the Dubs havent made one....Quote:
and thank god for that, connaught games should be shown late at night, just after the orieachtas report
Leinster is more competitive the Connacht but that does not make it better, just means there is a lot of teams of the equally crap standard bar Dublin.......and we are well capable of bursting their over inflated egos as well.....
bennocelt not sure if ye are a dub, but rings the same.
Every year connaughts two main teams are contenders for AI, so yer talking out of yer arse, and the minors from 3 have won all irelands in the last few years. People really dont have a clue about gaelic football, when they talk like that about connaught football.
The draw for the qualifiers tomorrow should be interesting. Hopefully they'll screen it on setanta.
The Ulster semi final was hard work, there was a suppressed quality about the game. Might have been a slow burn game had Down got a few points on the board in the last 15 mins but Armagh kept píssing on any small fire that Down lit.
It was a far cry from Down's good attacking play against Tyrone.
Consistancy is a hard one for a team like Down but the excellent Dan Gordon stood tall. Coulter looked unfit, strangely ended up playing around midfield. Freetaker Liam Doyle was badly missed as frees were wasted..
Lovely to see two class players like Clarke and McDonnell at the top of their game.
Armagh's defense is well marshalled and when they bother they are among the best movers of the ball in the country. Though you'd have to wait and see how they progress in the game against Fermanagh.
Their midfield was poor so there is plenty of room for improvement.
Ref did well.
heres the qualifiers draw:
Limerick v Meath
Longford v Laois
Kildare v Cavan
Offaly v Down
Louth v Tyrone
Tipperary v Westmeath
Donegal v Roscommon
Monaghan v Derry
Fairly delighted with a home tie against the Rossies, always good to avoid the other ulster teams! Monaghan Derry will be a real tough battle, impossible to call. other than that theres not much to excite really

Jeez h chris, Westmeath were a total embaressment yesterday< when will Dolan step upto the plate:(
Monaghan Derry looks like the best clash in the qualifiers. Offaly Down, Louth Tyrone and Kildare Cavan should also be good ones.
Dolan can take some of the blame alright, but I'd be looking at the amount of easy ball the dubs got to turn over in and around westmeaths half back line. they were farting about with hand passes when it wasn't safe to, it was as if it had been beat into them - 'don't kick it out of defence'! it was there for the taking after the 1st 20 mins but they didnt go about it in the right way. Donegal were as bad as any team for this over kill hand passing but thankfully they learned from their mistakes and now give it a big kick when its needed
I have got over teams letting it slip to beat the Dubs when they had the game in their grasp :)
I would not single out Dolan for blame.
Westmeath made a few changes in the 2nd half in response to the positive changes the Dubs made to shore up their defense. The changes Westmeath made put them at a greater disadvantage, like moving Glennon away from the front line.
Some malaise infected the whole team about the way they did not take the game by the scruff of the neck when the Dubs put their neck down for the chop. You'd almost suspect a fix was on
Dont think you can put it all on Dessie Dolan, some of the possession they gave away was outrageous. Thought there was too much dependency put on Glennon too. Agree with the point about hand-passing, there was a lot of messing around in the back line at times.
As for the draw...Laois at home, I'm not too confident but maybe we could cause a shock ?! :)
Longford v Laois this Sunday?
re Longford Laois
maz and pauro, maybe ye know what the Longford camp is like, but I can tell you the Laois one is stinking at the moment. Talk here is of Kearns last game, players not ar*sed etc. Longford to win for me.
Dont honestly know how we are fixed. I know there was a challenge game planned early last week and was called off, not enough players to field. This is mainly due to the fact most lads were involved with their clubs for championship games. I know a couple of lads called back into the squad, some refused, some are going back.
Hard to call Kingdom
Turns out that changed Bennocelt, Paul Kelly is the only one gone afaik. Paul Barden has not retired just yet, so its not as bad as originally thought.
Is Padraig Clancy out for Laois? He was sent off against Wexford
Is Noel Garvan still captaining Laois? Once worked with him and a bit of a git to be honest. Sounds like a good game ahead so. Might even be home that weekend for it.
Early 2pm start for Cork and Kerry.
They have the football stage to themselves on Sunday.
How many Kerry folk will rouse themselves from their Sunday morning slumber to attend the Final against their great rivals?
Here is one group of Kerry supporters starting early with their travel preparations.
Massey Ferg
are they doing a two for one offer on tickets for the Cork/Kerry final? Sure I read that somewhere.
The Munster Council are only expecting a crowd of approx 20000 for Sundays game which for a provincial final is terrible
I think that offer ended a while ago, before the start of this week anyway. it only applied to buying online afaik. good enough if they get a tiny crowd, a team winning 2 games to get to an AI 1/4 final, while others face 4 or 5 games  very unfair
Maybe so. But while things aren't perfect, I'm not sure there's a better alternative. They'll be celebrating last year's win in Sligo for 20 years. For Wexford to get to a Leinster is a decent achievement, a win, like Laois's and Westmeath's recently, would be glorious, something for fans and players alike to look back on with great memories. If Fermanagh win Ulster it'll provide tangible reward to a very good team. In other words the All-Ireland series isn't the be all and end all, the provincial championships retain value. Maybe not for Kerry in Munster but that's about it. That Munster is uncompetitive is a problem for the relevant County Boards and Munster Council.
What would your solution be to end the inequity?
That's about it I'd say. The combination of a bad weather forecast, the inaccessibility (parking and such) of Páirc Uí Chaoimh and the general bad vibes the place has (don't like it at all myself), the early throw-in, Kerry people not getting excited 'til August, the general lack of hype, and the potential alienation of Cork fans after the strike, would all point towards a low turn out. Also, it's interesting to look at the attendances for Cork Kerry matches in Munster over the past 10 years. Note the slide since the qualifiers were introduced in 2001!Quote:
crowd of approx 20000 for Sundays game
1998 -- 43,994 (final)
1999 -- 42,755 (final)
2000 -- 41,150 (semi-final)
2001 -- 41,158 (final)
2002 -- 22,568 (semi-final replay)
2002 -- 30,245 (semi-final draw)
2003 -- Didn't meet
2004 -- 30,644 (semi-final)
2005 -- 32,011 (final)
2006 -- 26,220 (final draw)
2006 -- 23,693 (final replay)
2007 -- 31,420 (final)
That's just about spot on KH. It looks very like that the advent of qualifiers has led to the downgrading of the Munster Final.
It's sad to read reports that this contest hold no great incentive for either team. As in neither team would be accelerating their preparation to get an edge and neither really have to. Whereas it still looks as if the hurlers would stop bullets to win Munster.
I see the odds are 3/1 Cork and 4/11 Kerry.
That's about right.
Kerry could be taken but it would require a partial alignment of the Planets on Cork's side.
Canty is a doubt.
A bit simplistic so please forgive me, but why not merge Connaught and Munster in the football?? Its heading that way in the hurling (not to the same extreme but galway&antrim are surely about to join the leinster champ to improve competitiveness). It would lead to lesser teams (sligo, leitrim, limerick etc) getting a couple of games in their own 'championship' compared to the one, maybe two, they usually get at present (IMO Sligo last year would only happen every 20 years in Connaught as it is now, and there's no reason why they couldn't pull the same off in a combined champ). It would make things that bit harder for the kerry's and mayo's compared to the way things are at present. Not that it will ever happen as each of the provincial councils would be against it (financially as much as anything), even though their crowds are in increasing decline, whilst crowds in ulster (the most competitive football province) are constantly strong.
Didn't see Cork coming back like that after a shambles of a first half. Second half was 1 way traffic and I have to say Cork looked a different beast. I think the Gooch touched the ball on two occasions with Kerry looking subdued and were woeful on the whole.
The qualifiers look a bit tasty as well........I think it's fair to say that the championship has finally kicked off after that game.
Yeah they fell assunder in the second half, thought the 2 Kerry sendings off was very harsh. Actually on a whole I thought referee Derek Fahy was awful bad today.
Would it not be better to call this thread ''GAA''(so hurling is included)....
Anyway i think the Leinster Final there just proved that there down to one provincial championship now, no team should be winning a final by 19 points, Leinster has gone down the drain with Offaly and Wexford gone backwards over the past few years, so now KK go into the semi-final while we have to win 4 matches on the bounce to get there(Galway have no second chance like the rest do).
Well there was only ever 2 to begin with. Give Dublin another couple of years and they'll start competing with the big boys. KK won't dominate forever. If GAA history has taught us nothing else, it's that all teams have a shelf-life. Everyone was full of talk of Kerry strolling to another All-Ireland this year. That doesn't seem too likely after today. Once the hunger goes, previously dominant teams suddenly look very ordinary.
I agree and disagree, yes every team has a shelf life but this is more then that, The Dubs have shown flashes of form over the past two years but even for the foreseeable future they would be taken to the cleaners aswell, i think the paltry attendence at the Leinster Semi's showed the interest in hurling in the county.
Wexford are now turning into a second tier team, Offaly turned that corner two/three years ago, Leinster has effectivly turned into Connacht where Galway would hammer Roscommon to win through to the Semi's, and it's not that KK have improved over the past few years over the Leinster counterparts, it's the others have gone backwards.
I don't think you can compare Kerry with KK in Leinster, i was'nt talking about AI's just provincial championships.
Counties like Cork,Kilkenny,Galway,Tipp,Limerick will go through phases and your argument about ''team shelf-life'' is valid here but in case of counties like Wexford, Offaly,Laois and Antrim they just don't have the structures in place to produce players of the calibre to compete, this comes from tradition and interest in the counties, which just is'nt there to compete year after year.
To see a team getting beat by 19points in a final shows it's just more then a phase, Leinster in dead IMO!!
Yeah, but if they took out one of the big guns all the anto's and deco's would come crawling out of the woodwork laden down with dutch gold and baying for blood. Plus, Dublin is swarming with kids carrying hurleys. I see them every day. And they can't all be up to no good.
Oh dear oh dear oh dear! What a shambles. I don't know who I was more disgusted at, Pat O'Shea on the line, or that pleb of a ref. Great 2nd half performance from Cork but I honestly would have preferred Scanlon to have kicked the ball over his own bar rather than constantly dally with the ball and get creamed.
It can only get better after yesterday. There will need to be some changes and luckily Kerry have 3 weeks to get it sorted. For me out would go Scanlon and Brosnan with Griffin and declan coming back in. The full back line will be fine, they won't have to deal with a Cussen again.
Still think Kerry will do more than Cork in this years champs.
The referring so far has been terrible, it looks like the GA is now a bit like soccer with players diving and gettting easy frees. I thought it was awful that none of the TV3 panel mentioned anything about all the easy frees giving out in the Dublin -Wmeath game. It ruined the game for me.
And i dont think any of the 3 players yesterday deserved to be sent off. Maybe the refs are trying to make a name for themselves?
Also why do some Ga players now have gumshields? Bizarre
I used to wear a gum shield when I played under 14 a decade ago so it's not a new thing (I must have seen some senior player doing it to have thought it was cool  )!
Great to see Cork spring that comeback, Wexford got pretty much what was expected in the hurling, biggest disappointment was the minor team getting a good beating too when a lot was expected of them.
Roll on the Dubs in the football final, hoping to be there, it'll be a great occasion for Wexford football regardless of the outcome.
