i think he rang him out of courtesy to be honest.
or maybe something like this:
"Giles told me you want to go back into club management?"
"yep - i wanna work with top quality players like Tyrone Mears and Matthew Oakley on a daily basis"
"bad buzz, do you fancy doing a bit of part time work on the side as a member of me and john courtenay's selection panel to pick venables, do ya?"
"-
"hello?.....hello?.....ah well i can get andy townsend instead he'll pick him"

Linking him with the England vacancy. One thing that worries me about this article is that he seems to be implying that he won't put forward his own name - if someone wants him they'll have to contact him, and I'm not sure if the FAI is capable of this.
He also indicated strongly that he's open to being approached.
It's a no-lose situation for FAI. If they don't like him after an interview, fine, but not approaching him especially after all the guff about doing the right thing would represent a massive neglect of duty.
This is feckin torture! Here we have the real deal in limbo waiting to be approached and yet time ticks by. He is willing to talk to federations/clubs - he said so himself.
The Finnish press conference is tomorrow. It's extremely unlikely they will announce anything other than his departure. The only reason he will stay on is because he wants to continue working and as, inexplicably, no one seems to have shown an interest in him could sign another contract.
N. Ireland wanted him when Sanchez left. They approached him in mid contract with Finland and yet we ignore him when he is out of contract. How ridiculous can it get?!!
By the way how long does it take to form a ****ing selection committee. Do something you ****ing imbeciles!!
....By the way, I still foolishly refuse to believe Venables has the job...it just can't be so:(
''But I'm proud of what I've done. I've had 32 qualifying games with Switzerland and Finland and lost four of them...''
Dont know the full extent of his record (Draws/Wins) but thats impressive.

Roy Hodgson is part of the English FA selection committee with Toshack, Platini and Beckenbauer.
Meanwhile, in contrast with the FAI's reluctance to reveal any names, the English FA's chief executive Brian Barwick has revealed the experts that he has spoken to in relation to filling their managerial vacancy. They are Uefa chief Michel Platini, German legend Franz Beckenbauer, Welsh manager John Toshack and Finnish boss Roy Hodgson
Yes, that's be him!
Hodgson has just quit as Finland manager. Said he has'nt been asked to be part of an England manager selection committee.
Sign him up!
Roy has announced his resignation from the Finland job!
Roy Hodgson has resigned as coach of Finland following their failure to qualify for Euro 2008, sparking rumours he could be in line to take over Scotland or the Republic of Ireland.
Let the rumours gather wind I say.
Can´t see how he resigned when his contract ran out in November.
I think he resigned in the same way that Kerr was sacked. He did not re sign a contract and Kerrs contract was not not resigned.
Thats what I was saying.
Nothing has really changed today. It was commom knowledge his contract was up on November 30th and it was 99% certain he would not sign up again.
They FAI are not going to suddenly go after him now...they are hopeless:(
either way he's available and should be approached asap...
We dont know if he will be or wont be contaced. We dont know if they have contacted Venables at this stage.
True, all we do know is that the one man who said he wouldnt be contacting anyone in relation to the Ireland job contacted Paul Jewell in relation to the Ireland job.
That was simply a solitary ingredient of this rich farce. How can we depend on a man who cant keep track of the lies he's told, mere days after he's told them?
We won't get him. Not now with all these other countries managerless. I can see him taking the Australian or England job.
get on the phone to the man now and ask for a sit down. No harm in finding out whether he'd be tempted.
Just seen this quote from Dick Advocat on why he turned the Australian job down in favour of staying at Zenith St. Petersburg.....
Asked exactly why his future would be in St Petersburg rather than Sydney, his answer was simple.
"I couldn't refuse this offer. It was quite a lot of money, to be honest."
''How much more?''
"It was not double, it was more."
That's a lot then?
"Much more."
Surely we would be offering more than the Australians could afford?
Venables was contacted last Saturday by the FAI. The English Journalist (can't remember his name) who is a regular contributor to newstalk's On The Ball was having lunch with TV last Saturday when Venables recieved a call from the FAI. Was covered on last nights show.
I bet Venables bought the lunch too.
From 11-a-side.com:
The 60-year-old Englishman – who has also been linked with the England manager’s position – is expected to be one of six or seven prospective managers to meet with the FAI’s independent subcommittee over the next week.
Hodgson is currently 18/1 fifth favourite to succeed Steve Staunton in Irish football’s top job.
Will they really meet 6-7 candidates?
Ahhh that old trick by Venables, have lunch with a journalist and pretend to receive a call from the FAI.
