Was tidy enuf in 1st half. Gave away an awful ball for Aalburg's 2nd goal though. I'd prefer to see him playing more centrally
Took off at half time. Disgraceful treatment by Fergie IMO. Firstly he was picked to play right wing:confused:. He did an ok job but then Fergie decides to haul him off at half time to be replaced by Ji Sung Park. Not going to help the young lads confidence one bit and as a Man Utd fan i think it was a dreadful thing for Fergie to do to a young player trying to break into the team
Well, United's Irish lads didn't acquit themselves well tonight.
Gibson gave the ball away for Aalborg's second goal, and John O'Shea failed to pick up his mark who ended up heading it in.
Don't think Gibson can make it as a winger, although he did hit in some nice crosses that could have led to opportunities had somebody got on the end of them.

fletcher has been utillised in different area, oshea has been utilised in different areas, as has brown as did silvestre. Ferguson generally buys in the players he feels will always be the first on the team sheet. THere is nothing to suggest with gibson it will be any different. If gibson wants to stay with united he will need to fit in in different areas just like the others. Fergie is loyal to squad plays as has been proved with fletcher and oshea.
Played out of position last night and it showed. Gave the ball away in the lead up to Aalborg's second goal and also then backed away from the attacker that put the cross in.
He played a similar cross field ball against Cyprus. Straight to a Cypriot player. Got the weight of the pass wrong.Quote:

Nice finish. Still looks lost out on right wing
Tidy finish, didn't panic. Playing right side of midfield, has got in good position. Had one sliced effort.

He played the full 90 against derby tonight.
It was a poor team performance but i thought he did ok. he played the first 60 mins on the right. He didnt threaten much but kept things simple and managed to put in a couple of dangerous balls
Fergie took off welbeck, scholes and anderson and left gibson on which was good to see. It meant he had 30 mins playing where he is best in the centre.
He was much more effective in the central position in my opinion, particularly when Carrick came on (perhaps this was due a confidence boost due to the knowledge he wasnt going to be subbed).
Fergie commented after that he thought Gibson was one of the better united performers on the night and indicated that he would figure in the second leg. So not a bad night for the lad
Out of the 5 players that played in central midfield I thought Gibson was best, even if it was only for half an hour. He just seems to me like a player that gets by in games, he doesn't look for the ball too much.
I only saw the last 20 minutes of the game but he seemed to be getting on the ball a lot anyway. In fact a lot of United's play seemed to be going through him in midfield. He was the one who was knocking balls out to the wide men and feeding them into Tevez and when play broke down they passed it back to Gibson and let him start it up again.
Admitedly for the most part they weren't getting very far but in the short bit of the game I saw he at least was getting involved in the play.
He played well. The United team was a mess and didn't deserve a goal. Still, I'm cautiously optimistic about him right now. Well played Mr. Gibson.
Decent performance but you have to take in the opposition. 18th in the Championship.
He performed better than Anderson and Scholes on the day.
There were times when he looked to pass it wide or back instead of hitting a penetrating ball through the middle, and this was a bit irritating.
On the plus side I think he only lost possession once over the course of the game, but he just wasn't positive enough for my liking, especially when they went down a goal.
A move in the right direction though, and playing 90 minutes should do wonders for his confidence.
It's still great to see him get his games & slowly chip away at it. I have been hopeful for the lad since hearing of him, but ever since Dunphy basically dismissed his entire career I became doubly hopeful he would make the grade.
I only saw last 20 mins too. He was in the middle at that stage and did well enough. At times he was given the ball in tight situations and quickly played an accurate first time pass to feet, showing an awareness of his “out ball”, always a good sign. I thought he could have been more aggressive / assertive in looking for the ball at times - I think he seemed happy for the more senior players to take responsibility. Seems to do the right things for a midfielder (one guy did dance past him in the box late on) and seems to have the awareness required for the position.
Considering the team performance, he was pointed out for praise by Ferguson which is a great sign. If anyone can bring a player through from underage to the reserves to the first team, its Fergie. Looks like he's gonna be staying at OT for the foreseeable future anyways.
Not to rain on your parade, but the last player Fergie brought through from the reserves to become a first team regular at United was either Wes Brown or John O'Shea. Having said that, the majority of players that do make at least one appearance for the senior team go on to have decent careers in football, albeit at a lower level.Quote:

whatever anyone says Gibson is rated by fergie, after listening to post match comments last night he obviously sees he has a future at OT - all jokes aside gents some people have been critical of him so far , but both Fergie & Trap have enough knowledge to know when they spot a good player - Gibson will be a good player in my eyes.
There is no doubt in my mind that Gibson is good enough to play Premier League football right now. But I'm not sure that's going to happen with United.
Is he better than their other options? Last night's match would suggest he's closer than I may have thought, but even if he is, I'm not entirely sure he'll get a chance to prove it.
Ferguson has been talking about Gibson positively now for a long time, but I'm not sure he has 90 minutes of senior football in the centre of the park under his belt yet. Every time I've seen him in a competitive match for United this season he's been played on the right, with the exception of last night. Even then, he didn't start there.
But, he's going to get a chance in a semi-final, and I hope he grabs it with both hands.
I think he's going to be a decent player for Ireland either way, it's just a matter of whether or not his club future lies with United.
Me either, but I don't think he'll be risked in the centre of the park for a full game until he's proven he can handle the pressure of it. 30 minutes or so in the engine room last night is another step along the road.Quote:

Not quite sure why some people remain unconvinced. He's a young kid, is highly regarded and is quite obviously work in progress. he needs to bulk up a bit i think as well.
What i cant understand is how players cant get better at tackling and imposing themselves, its not a an innate skill rather one that is acquired through practice and awareness. Hopefully he can literally put a stamp on things and get better at this.
Have to say I was half watching the match(wanted to watch it all but had a committee meeting so couldn't)and was automatically attracted to his pass to tevez in the second half from the right side of midfield, i think it was a break out from defence, anyway he looked up and instantly found tevez, was a great piece of play.
On another trivial note, he looks a lot like evans well in terms of physique anyway. I know evans was never going to play for ROI, but it would have been great last night if he was. Himself, gibson and oshea all playing for current PL and CL champions. No excuses not to qualify for the world cup ;)
