Happy Shane Long Day everyone.
Still love how in the live broadcast the first cut after the goal was a close-up on a very unhappy Manuel Neuer. He really wasn't expecting the rocket that flew past him.
15 years since Brian Kerr's final game in charge.
A 0-0 draw against Switzerland that would have to improve to be described as "drab"
We could have planned for another hour and not scored. Switzerland only needed a draw, and barely left their own half for the entire game. I know Kerr was a conservative manager, but did we really need to keep four defenders on for the whole game? Taking off Robbie Keane and Clinton Morrison when we had to score was baffling

It's got to be up there as the most consequential and memorable night supporting Ireland.
Getting chills even thinking about it now.
40 years today since Chris Hughton and Michael Robinson scored their first goals in international football in a 6-0 win against Cyprus
40 years, no?
(Just to make everyone feel old!)
sorry, it is 40. I can't count.
Never saw those goals before. The Grealish one in particular would have been in the Best Goals comp otherwise. Hughton's is a most un-Hughton goal, albeit that the keeper really should have done better. The second is a contender for our worst ever goal, and Stapleton's little dink is a nice finish.
What was the full team. We had some fine players on the 80’s ( even late 70’s ) Ok maybe not the entire Eleven or Squad.
25 years today since Jack Charlton's final game in charge, the 2-0 loss to the Netherlands at Anfield in a play off for Euro '96
I can't believe that was played in December.
Playoffs felt so so alien at the time that I guess a game in December wasn't that out there as the weird thing to remember about that game.
longest 24 hrs of my life. ferry at 8am, trains to anfield, hardly landed a punch all match then return journey home arriving by ferry at 8 without a single wink of sleep the whole time.
however, by far the best pre match atmosphere i ever experienced. 30 mins of song after song from the irish fans on the kop
I realise they are bigger things going on today, but I'm still surprised there's no mention of the anniversary from the FAI
15 years today since Steve Staunton's first game in charge, a friendly against Sweden that saw the debuts of Joey O'Brien, Kevin Doyle, Wayne Henderson, and Stephen Ireland, as well as Liam Miller's first international goal

20 years today since Roy Keane's 50th cap, a 4-0 win over Cyprus in March 2001
I was living in Perth, WA at the time and couldn't find a way to watch that game for love nor money. I remember getting my oul lad to text me updates. Couldn't believe the score and hoped it was the start of a new era.
I guess it was the start of a new era, just an awful one.
40 years today since we lost 1-0 to Belgium, after a disallowed goal for some reason (2:44 below) and a goal from a free kick for being tackled by the force of gravity (6:40)
Wow, I'm no fan of VAR but I just watched both goals in that clip and I can't think of a stronger argument in favour of VAR than those.
I joined this forum in response to that game. I had a different username at the time. I made a couple of hundred posts under a different name. I went away for a while, couldn't remember my credentials, and re-registered as BacktoWalsall when it all started to go wrong for Stan.
It all looked so positive on opening night for him. It makes me wonder what might have happened if Bobby Robson hadn't taken ill.
30 years today since the 1-1 draw in Wembley against England
Not a massively important game, or result, but it's 25 years today since Gary Breen scored his first goal for Ireland, in a 3-1 loss to the Netherlands.
Bergkamp's finish for the equaliser is exquisite
Another 25 year anniversary today, since David Connolly's first international goal, against the United States in the 1996 US Cup
20 years since Clinton Morrison, John O'Shea, and Steven Reid made their international debuts, with Morrison becoming the first player since Tommy Coyne to score on his debut
25 years since thumping Liechtenstein 5-0, Quinn with two, Ian Harte (on his birthday!), Keith O'Neill, and Andy Townsend with the goals
Still our biggest away win
