While I completely agree with the principle behind what your espousing, I think the chances of a 24 year old Championship player getting a call up to the English teamin the medium to short term is very slim especially when he only qualifies for Ireland and England - and remember - his only international recognition came with a call up to an Irish underage squad.
Ours to lose etc etc
I think Jamie Vardy's journey from non-league player to POTY in England could act as inspiration to lads like Hogan.
And Vardy has a good 5 years on Hogan.
Yeah fair point. Vardy is quite an exception though I'd say? If Ireland offered him a spot and he took a look at the queue ahead of him for England, it's a pretty long queue and there's not many players who can (or have ever) jump that queue as quickly as Vardy did.
There's also Rickie Lambert, who made his Premier League debut aged 30 and his England debut a year later. Also Charlie Austin didn't play in the top flight until he was 25 and, while he is yet to get an international cap, his form for QPR meant he merited serious consideration and he may yet get in. And remember Hogan's career was seriously interrupted by injury just as he was starting to really motor. So if he continues this fine form into next season, he would certainly be entitled to believe he could get a move up within a year and still be young enough to be considered for England duty as he enters what should be his prime goal scoring years. With that said, there's no reason why we can't express an interest in bringing him into the fold, especially as there are likely to be a couple of strikers' places opening up in the Irish squad in the not-too-distant future. In the end, I guess it will come down to whether he has some level of desire to play for us or not.
Agree with the above. I see it as a positive that the likes of Vardy and co. have made their England debuts after careers spent down the leagues. At least this way when Hogan makes his decision (he sort of has already?) then it will be with his eyes open and the door to the England set-up not completely bolted shut. 3 grandparents is a lot. He's down in London with Brentford. When he makes the trip back up to Salford now that the season is over he can have a chat with his parents that have very strong Irish blood ties. JG had 3 Irish grandparents too. But, as with young Dan Crowley's old man, hopefully Hogan's isn't quite as... eccentric.
Hectic old afternoon in League One. Conor Hourihane's Barnsley are currently leading Wigan at HT. Paddy Madden's Scunthorpe are hot on their heels as they're up a goal but they're two behind on goal difference for the last play-off spot. John Egan's Gillingham are drawing with Millwall 0-0 but even a win won't do them if Scunthorpe and/or Barnsley win because they'd still be a point adrift of both or either. Anthony Forde has nabbed the third for Walsall as they lead 3-0 and sit pretty in third. Dave Mooney has a goal for Southend so far but they've little to play for in the middle of the table.
Huge Irish interest overall in the top 6th. I just realised I didn't even mention Billy Clarke of Bradford and Shaun Williams and Aiden O'Brien at Millwall who make up the play-off contingent. Also, Burton Albion are drawing nil all with Doncaster. If it stays a draw they go automatically but if they lose then they're probably doomed for play-off lottery. Damien McCrory is a mainstay there and Anthony O'Connor has played a bit but is on the bench today.
Barnsley up 3-1. Conor Hourihane. Millwall up 1-0. Aiden O'Brien. Important goals on an important day.
Anthony Forde on course for a hat-trick.
Landmark goals for Madden (20th in League), Hourihane (10th in League) and O'Brien (10th in League).

Will be testing a new feature on the twitter account for tonight's game, live tweeting stats about the starting lineup, the introduced subs, and the goals when they go in. Hoping it'll go off without a hitch, and can be used again for the Euros. Follow on twitter here: https://twitter.com/irish_abroad/
few early hiccups aside, I think the live test on twitter went well. Thanks for anyone who followed. Needs a little refinement ahead of the euros, but I'm happy with how it went
