Kerr Stay or Go?

I will admit that I was happy when Brian got the job. Of course I was a little worried that he didn't have any international playing experience and might find it difficult to get the full respect of the players but his heart was in the right place and he loved Irish football. He was by far the best candidate that applied for the job so I thought he was worth the risk.
Unfortunately, it turned out that he did have problems motivating the team for most games, for whatever reason. I thought we were onto a winner when we had a good 2-0 win over Scotland with his first game. I know it was only Scotland (who have improved a lot since then) but all the players seemed up for the game. However, it appears that they were just trying to impress the new manager in his first game, rather than Kerr himself motivating them.
None of the teams he put out since then looked very motivated, apart from the games against France (players were probably self-motivated to play against such a big team) and a few friendly games (Holland) where again the fridge players like Quinn, Mabury and even Barrett played well and this was, as far as I can see, due to them really wanting to make the squad for competitive games and not due to Kerr’s motivation skills. After a few sloppy games he should have had some harsh words with the players who are were more or less guaranteed to be in the starting 11 (Keane, O’Shea, Kilbane) and if that didn’t work replace them. This didn’t happen.
In the end it is obvious that Kerr really loves and wants the job but the problem is that he is/was so afraid of messing up that he made too many safe/negative decisions.
So the risk of trying him out didn’t really work but I am glad that we gave him a shot or else if we had to of chosen someone else like Brian Robson and he also failed to qualify then Kerr would be next in line to take over and the next two or three years could be wasted. If a better candidate becomes available Kerr should be replaced but I don’t think it should be automatic. They should put the position on offer and allow Kerr to reapply with other candidates. If nobody better applies rehire Kerr. We shouldn’t just sack him and replaces him with any sh!te.
Maybe second time around he will be less uptight and make some brave decisions.

go, shocking football, players don't seem to have a clue, mccarthy had similar players, and got a lot more out of them..

Bring mccarthy back then :) when he left he said he would like another shot at it in a few years time.

You could argue that Keane was rubbish and that Reid was going to get sent off (on a yellow and a warning). That said, I would have tried 4-3-3 for the last ten minutes. Nothing to lose.

Stay....until there is a decent squad there who are worthy of a better manager.

Stay, by default...don't see an obvious replacement to motivate and improve what is generally a not-so-great squad atm. If confidence is missing who out there can give it? (I am assuming Mo'N will not take the job for obvious reasons)

.....what is it they say? "better the devil ya know...."??!

BTW, Mick failed to qualify for the last Euro's with these players as well did he not?

No point in crying over spilt milk now. If this forces us to have a long, hard look at how things are to be improved then that's no bad thing.

Go.......for a squad of moderate quality we can't finish much worse than fourth in a qualifying campaign -this is where I believe we would've finished without a manager, it is up to the manager to get an extra 15-25% from the players so that we win some games we would otherwise have drawn.

It's true that McCarthy had some bad days ( e.g. away to Croatia and Macedonia ) and had a lot more time in charge than Kerr but as everyone knows, it's the recent lack of creativity from the current team / set up that is the real killer.

It's true that there are no easy games in International Soccer -a few shocks and close shaves take place on every international match day -just look at some of last nights results:

Holland 0-0 Macedonia ( OK, Holland had already qualified )
Italy 2-1 Moldova ( Italy only got the winner in the 85th minute )
Lithuania 1-1 Belgium ( OK Lithuania aren't the minnows they once were but they're not world beaters )
Malta 1-1 Bulgaria

i voted no but i couldnt give a rats ass to be honest. kerr is a much of a muchness. he isnt like micko or jacko in that they were very definite personality wise.

The FAI are never going to extend Kerr's contract. I only hope the new manager gets a TWO YEAR ONLY CONTRACT

Stay. From reading the rags and listening to others, the majority of Irish fans are deluding themselves. That squad of players, bar 4 maybe, are a very average team and no matter what manager is there they will never improve.

Granted Kerr made some bad decisions last night but overall he did the best he could with the bucket of sh*t he had to use.

Now this brings me to my next point in that, is this the wake up call that maybe they should start looking at quality players in the EL? I mean imagine if the likes if George O Callaghan playing there last night, a playermaker who can make things happen. Or Wes houlihan from Shels etc.. I mean, why do we always have to count on the crap from lower divisions across the water who are no better and most of the time worse than what we have at home.

I mean look at Kevin Doyle, the man played brilliantly in the EL with Cork, was outstanding with the U21's and never gets a mention at a call up. Then he moves to Reading and suddenly he's in the squad no more than a couple of months after moving. What sort of a message does that give to the rest of the players in the league?

The real way to sort out the mess, it to look at the bigger picture. We need regional academy's set up to develop the game here. The clubs can't afford to do it so its up to the FAI to sort it out. The sooner the majority of godsh*tes who are calling for the managers head realise that then the better.

I was happy when he got it (though Troussier was my preferred option) and he impressed me with his enthusiasm and organisation skills. It also appeared he was kicking the squads drinking sessions in the head ...though more recent (and in fairness to the squad -unreliable) reports suggest that bit of dicipline has slipped.

I really want him to have some success but the decline of the squads performances -on his watch -have been shocking. If the FAI decide to let him stay on ...fine -but my instincts tell me it's not good enough to leave him in the job as a caretaker just because there's nobody obvious to take over.

If and when the job's advertised -names will start to come forward.

Look at the improvement (barring the result against Belarus) in the Scotland team after they changed their manager.Same group of players (inferior to ours) draws with Italy, beats Norway and Slovenia away.

a new manager can help as long as there isnt other issues in the team. To be brutally honest lads, I'll be glad to see the back of Roy keane. He was a great player in his day but is way to contraversal still.

Kerr is too devisive at the FAI as well, no one particluarly likes him. An english based manager will be well accoustomed to the savage english media and will properly stand up for himself.

Come on, tell us how you really feel

I'm sorry, but there's absolutely no reason, considering his entire reign, to extend the man's contract. He has to go.

Think about. In this campaign, we had 6 matches against 3 average at best teams. With the way the group panned out, we only had to win 1 GAME, 1 GAME, and we couldn't even do that much.

You go back to the only games that meant anything in the Euro campaign, Russia at home and Switz away. Couldn't even win one of those either.

We haven't won a single game of consequence, and there have been 8 of them, on his watch. In every single one of those games we knew how crucial a victory was, and we never saw 3 points.

We let him off the hook last campaign, said it wasn't his. No way in the world around it now, he has to go. This isn't knee-jerk. Knee-jerk is the impulse to say that anyone else will do.
