that was his 100th appearance for Southampton as well
I'm not fussed. It's not like Kyle Lafferty or David Healy were pulling up trees at club level before their highly impressive international exploits. Yeah, it's better to be carrying proven form into a match but international football is littered with examples of players thriving without their club form matching.
It's one of those weird things that he seems to be lethal off the bench for Ireland but doesn't seem to really get in the game when he comes on for his club.
I thought all our best play against Moldova came through Long and Hoolahan, Long probably moreso.
A lad as handsome as Long shouldn't be having confidence issues.
Puel wouldn't even start him on his birthday. Better come on and score to prove him wrong (and some fantasy points).
Comes on and wins a penalty which Tadic converts. 3-0.
Excellent run to win the penalty after coming on. I thought he looked very sharp.
He should be demanding to take those penalties though, even when he's not winning them.
Tadic has missed several FFS.
That's not really his call though, is it? He could have got on the scoresheet too, two pretty decent chances, one where he missed the ball when any touch would have probably been enough, one where he got underneath a header in injury time.

Knows how to get a peno, Morgan put his hand on him anyway.
Winner at Anfield.... Bit like the Germany goal!
Great finish. Being 30 suits him.
Not too many players can say they've scored two cup winning goals at Anfield.
Lovely finish.

Loose pass? A touch harsh? It wasn't ideal and it was a great first touch, just like Germany, but the midfielder did a great job throughout that move. The direction of the pass was good, a bit firm though, and effortlessly salvaged by Long. Textbook breakaway goal.
Yeah it really was brilliant by Sims. When he came on for Redmond I was thinking this might be a foolish move by Puel, throwing a nineteen year old into that high pressure scenario when a goal from Liverpool would have dragged the whole thing on for another half hour as well, when Redmond would probably have been needed. I guess that's why I do my decision making on a football forum and in front of the TV.
"lovely stuff"... "a Long awaited goal" ;)
Good stuff, the defence could not keep up with him mind you I guess having a fresh pair of legs helped,
well fairly fresh he came on at half time but there are not many who can catch him when he gets going
fresh or otherwise.
Chance of a medal for him.
Yeah, I actually justified it in my own mind but it was gibberish alright. :)
Not a club famous for its Irish players, but a few such as Austin Hayes, Alan McLoughlin and Rory Delap spring to mind. Nice to see the underdog get to a Final.
Two days later: Long comes off the bench to win a penalty against the Premier League Champions
Five days later: Long comes off the bench to score the winner at Anfield in League Cup semi final
Good man Charlie, just the kind of reverse psychology Longie needed to pull the finger out. :)
It was kind of interesting to hear the Sky Sports presenter (likeable guy, can't think of his name) put it to Le Tissier that as Long was running through you just never felt like he was going to miss. I'm not sure whether he was just living in the moment or that he doesn't know our Shane as well as we do. Carragher was talking about how difficult he used find it to mark Long as well, that along with the pace he's got a lot of strength. He also mentioned his low centre of gravity, he might be another who thinks that Long is smaller than he actually is.
He also said that when Long came on he looked at the names on Liverpool's bench, and felt that they had nobody who was likely to make as big an impact.
What did people here make of Long's 'handball'? I think he was lucky enough to get away with it. He definitely moved his arm towards the ball so I suppose it's just a matter of where it hit him exactly, but looked more arm than shoulder maybe? Football really is so fickle, so close to being a disaster of a night for him instead of this.
While I'm asking stuff, does anybody know if Rodriguez was injured or was the substitution tactical? Long must be pushing hard enough for his place now either way.
The pictures make it look even more like it than it was:

Simon Thomas is the presenter.
There's a video of the segment you've detailed - Carragher praising Long - here: https://vid.me/riUk
I thought the very same when he mentioned Long's "low" centre of gravity, ha.
I think Long's finishing has really improved since he turned 30.
Gary Kelly, Stephen Carr, Steve Finnan, have I forgotten any ? We used to regard Jeff Kenna as some kind of willing donkey when one owned a fine horse already. Heady days, players breaking into top half Prem sides left right and center.
Excellent run, touch and finish.
It would be interesting to compare Long and Rodriguez's goals per minutes ratio.
