Fair enough I understand what you are saying but I do rate him I did not rate that German team and he gave the country the belief that they could go on and win it even though they came up short.
I think he would have the respect of the players and the fact he lives away I dont think I would consider that a bad thing if he were willing to approch the job in a professional manner
I probably share your gut instinct but it'd be a gamble.
On top of what you said, I thought Klinsmann did very well to change defensive tactics from the high line that was exploited badly against Costa rica(?) in the first game to a very mean defence that was very tight for the rest of the tournament (in fact until the recent dead rubber at home to the Czech Rep.). Maybe that was first night nerves but generally I thought Klinsmann set the team out very well during that tournament. Then again, having good players and brilliant home support does help!
Klinsmann was in talks over taking the US job last year after Arena got the boot but the negotiations collapsed because he wanted full control of not only his own coaching staff, but the youth national teams and coaching supervisors as well.
Like the USSF, I'm sure the FAI would not want to relinquish full control either.

I always wanted Hodgson or Houllier to get the job and considering the former has been taken, I'm happy with this news. He is by far the most successful candidate in terms of trophies. His time in charge of Liverpool may not have been fantastic, but he still brought 3 trophies in 1 season, he brought them back to the CL and 2nd in the Prem.
This would be a real step forward if the FAI did appoint him, but could only see him sticking around for 1 campaign.
But I hate everyone on here picking out the bad points about every candidate. 99 % of managers will not have a clean slate through their managerial career. Barely anyone on here are actually positive about any candidate, other than maybe Hodgson.
This lad is a high callibre manager. FF's if the 3 man panel do appoint him.

Never fear, now we have Didier Deschamps coming up on the outside. He's already overtaken O'Leary and Giles and is breathing down Dalglish's neck.
Update: Deschamps now after jumping ahead of Dalglish and Hoddle; has he been seen around Merrion Square by any chance?
I reckon he'd make a good manager.

You must have been watching different games to me so. I was at each of those games and totally disagree that we made any major tatical changes against Cameroon (McAteer off injured at half time replaced by Finnan). Against Germany the change was to bring Quinn on to try something different agreed but the fact is that he didn't have 90 minutes in his legs so that was the only way he was going to be deployed. He was hardly going to start and get hauled off at half time was he? Ditto for the Spain game and you can't draw any conclussions from the Saudi Arabia game. I really don't know how you could say Kelly was ineffective in those games, while there were questions being asked over Harte's performances this wasn't the case with Kelly.Quote:

Allardyce has just jumped from 50-1 to 16-1.
Agree he's the grafter type and while that's how we've got our best results in the past, I'm not sure whether his style of football would stifle the talents of some of the young lads coming through.
Still, I'd take him ahead of most of the other misfits being touted as candidates.
Really heartened by the fact that McCarthy and Houllier seem to be in the mix now.
While I don't think Deschamps would take the job, I would be over the moon if he did.
As for Big Sam, while I think he is a fantastic manager, I don't think he's the right guy to get the most of our flair-filled squad.
Any chance of making a new poll with the current candidates? It would be interesting to know who the majority want now
I haven't a clue about Deschamps. Why is there such positivity about him?
I know he had Monaco in the top 3, they were near bottom the season before he came.
He brought Juve back in the top league, can´t have been that hard? Was he thought to be a longer term Juve manager?
If Houllier is in the frame, I think he is the outstanding candidate.

I voted for Deschamps; he's had success in league and cup play, and would bring a totally fresh approach.
That said, I like McCarthy and wouldn't mind having him back.

Vastly experienced French coach with a knowledge of interntaional management and hands on knowledge of the Premiership (where our players play for the most part) or a relatively inexperienced French coach?
Houllier fits the profile far better too in my opinion. Deschamps is of an age where I expect there's real risk of him leaving for a top club job.
i'll agree to differ with you on any tactical/selection debate but I just can't let that comment lie. As said on SEVERAL occasions my opinion of McCarthy as a manager has absolutely nothing to do with Saipan and was formed more around the time of the Euro 2000 qualifiers due to several baffling tactical and selection decisions which effectively cost us the chance to qualify for those championships.Quote:

Mick McCarthy for me. Got us to a WC finals. Has managed a lot of the current squad. And I believe Houllier and Deschamps are bookies inventions and have no interest in managing the Ireland team.
He might be a good option for us - not too many left now - but only if he changes his preference for a long ball game, we just don't have the players to make it work.
Which decisions were these that cost us the chance to qualify? The away game in Croatia turned out to be irrelevant, had we drawn it wouldn't have made any difference to the final standings. Bringing a midfielder on to protect a one nil lead in the final game isn't how I'd have played it but it's hardly rare and if Keith O'Neill had picked his man up from that corner it would have been seen as the correct thing to do and been forgotten about straight away. Away to Yugoslavia we played well and had a stone wall penalty against MCAteer not given, that cost us more then anything. I thought McCarthy did great for us too but in hindsight he should have left after the world cup and he lost the plot in the end.

At least now a few names are being bandied around who have actually managed in the past few years.
Houllier turned down the job before Christmas but Brady/Giles is still very much up and in the running. Nobody seems to know what Delaney's dealings with Venables are. True betting odds at the momentQuote:

Does anyone get World Soccer magazine? They have a one page article on manager salaries of the international game, and it would lead me to believe some of the figures bandied about here would be correct. The most expensive ones were obviously the England, German and Russian jobs but apart from England the other two were still only €2m p.a., not madly inflated from what will be on offer for our own job.
There were also some ridiculous ones. 80k was one salary, for Slavan Bilic!!!, some crazy ones too, Lars lagerback was on 100k.

I've been saying this all along. At €400,000 p.a. (Stans wedge) the Irish job is more attractive than many. At €1,000,000 it is not only more attractive than most, I fear it could become a sticking point every and any time a result doesn't come up to expectations. "FFS he's on a million quid! sack him and get someone else in (on at least a million quid)" and the thing spirals out of control to the point where you're changing manager every campaign. Delaney probably had no other choice but not to renew Kerr's contract, but to take that action and appoint the managerial package he did (regardless of OBR's) health was a bad mistake. The money thats available, the fact that it solely a senior international job, no underage and part time for most of the year, with a massive fan base, and a limited but relatively skilled work force (squad) to pick from, should have yielded better candidates than what have transpired.
I've been away for a while and have a lot of posts to read, but I'm getting the jist that Roy Hodgson was invited to interview the day he was offered the Fulham job. IF that is the case, then its the biggest indictment of the process so far. He was finished with Finland in November. November for the sake of Jebus.
I don't like the way this whole thing has been dragged out but it seems to me that a certain cockney wide boy was asked was he interested a few months ago, to which the response was positive, and the job was his to take over in early 2008. The interview lark was set up people applied, their applications were thrown out immediately and complete non-entity's were interviewed, while the process took so long that any aspiring successful candidates took up positions in club football leaving a choice of a cockney wide boy and nobodys. We all lose.
