i think thats a lazy analysis of Reid tbh, CD. He mixes his game up very well, in terms of passing, every time i have seen him. Sure, some of his hollywood passes dont come off but its not like that is all he does. He keeps the ball and he keeps it moving. Also, he has spent most of his Ireland career on the wing and has never shirked the defensive duties that this role entails. Treated shabbily by Trapatoni.
yeah but i think he deserved a bit of forgiveness and a second chance from il Duce.
What reason is that?
i heard what happened from a very reliable source close to Reid and he certainly was, going by that version of events, blamed for the late-night the players were having. It's also important to note that Reid doesn't drink....I reckon Robbie was the ring leader in the players having the late-night song-song. I could be wrong there but just a hunch
The reason for his initial omission may be a little harsh but Reid's form hasn't begged for a recall. I'd like to see him in the squad but, for the way we play, I'm just not sure of how he fits in on the pitch. Seems Reid might be best employed in a five man midfield, as someone mentioned, and that would entail ripping up a well-drilled system for the sake of one player.
In a 442 I agree with CD - he doesn't have the physicality required (or Trap demands) for our system. And on the left he's competing with Duff, McGeady, Hunt and Fahey (not to mention Treacy and possibly even McCarthy). Granted his natural ability is ace, but with all that competition he'd have to really start turning it on week after week in the Prem to be a slam dunk recall.
id like to see him in the squad too but only if he can continue to work hard and nail down regular football and put in good performances. He was one of our best players at the time of his exclusion. Its a damn pity.
He looked good in the highlights and laid on enough chances for Bent and Co. such that Sunderland should have at least drawn the game. His quality is undeniable. I, no more than any of the detractors on here can judge his fitness or if needs to lose weight...but that won't stop them anway. I'd be amazed if any manager would allow any player to not give maximum effort in terms of training and fitness yet still pick him in the team.
the truth is he doesn't suit Trap's system and he won't be recalled to the squad as long as Trap is there.
It's very similar to the Charlton/Brady situation in the late 80s
I was reading about Darren Bent's transfer request today in the Guardian and they were at pains to highlight that his dip in form since September has a lot to do with Andy Reid's exclusion from the side at Sunderland:
He is the kind of creative force we're seriously lacking in the squad at the moment, although the age old question of where he would fit in is bound to arise once again.Quote:
Although [Darren Bent] has scored 11 times this season, seven of those goals were registered before the end of September. Indeed recent months have seen Bent's form regress alarmingly and Steve Bruce, Sunderland's manager, persistently defends a forward whose personal performance dip has coincided with the out-of-favour Andy Reid's absence from the team. A creative midfielder, Reid had a hand in a high percentage of Bent's impressive 32 goals in 58 league games for Sunderland since leaving Tottenham in a £10m deal.
Where was he at the weekend? Not in the Blunts line-up or the Black Cats. Injured?
He was an unused sub.
Rumours out there that Steve Cottterill wants to take him to Portsmouth on loan.
The above is becoming the Andy Reid mantra. All of the above has been said of Reid for years and yet all of the above is still true of Reid - he needs to get properly fit, play regularly and consistently and prove it at EPL level.
Reid aint the answer for us and bar a few cameo performances for us in predominantly nothing games - he's brought little to the party (the guitar being the exception).
I agree on Andy Reid (the other Reid has retired from international football) but I suppose the problem is that Trap has excluded him from the squad and included less talented players. I thought Reid was class when he first hit the scene and was playing for Forest at a lower level but the truth is he hasn't made it at Premiership level. He is definitely worth a squad place but he isn't the unrecognised Messiah.
I think there is an element of truth in regards to Steven Reid, absence makes the heart grow fonder. But I think that there is little to question in regards to a fit Steven Reid and what he would have brought to the team. Robson identified him as central to the team way back and also Trap would have been purring contentedly with a fit Steven Reid and quite content with him in CM. At present, an almost permanently banjaxed Steven Reid would not bring much to the set up and it would be foolish to think he would.
Speed surprised at Reid's omission from Irish squad.

SkySports_Simon: #SkySources Andy Reid having medical at BlackpoolFC. Fee agreed with SunderlandFC for around £1m #SSNTDD
Good move but he's running out of chances at Premiership level. If Adam moves, it's a great opportunity to become Blackpool's go-to creative force. Keep them in the Premiership and remind everyone (especially Trap) how good he is.

Great news
Reidy can do a job at Blackpool. Ireland recall next if he impresses?
Taken from BBc site "Andy Reid to Blackpool!? At least sales of pies in Blackpool will not be impacted by Charlie Adam's probable departure!"
Joking apart great move for Reid. Guaranteed playing time. No reason he can't get back to the level he showed for Sunderland last season during Sunderland's good run of early/mid season results.
I'd be shocked if he ever wears the green again while Trap is in charge. Great move for him though, he could become a real hero in those parts if he turns it on.

Official: Blackpool sign Andy Reid from Sunderland for undisclosed fee
Blackpool play attacking football and Andy is an attacking player so it could be a good move for him.
Rrightly or wrongly we(Ireland) are not an attacking team so Andy does not really suit our "style"
great move for him, if he puts the work in and gets as fit as he was at the start of last year he will be immense in that team, look how good adam looks playing for them. if he doesn't put the work in he'll be answering phones in reidys cabs this time next year
Charlie Adam deal is definitely off now. Not sure if that's bad or good for Andy, but Ollie definitely picked him up as a like-for-like swap so probably bad.
It does look like Holloway picked him up as an Adam replacement, but Blackpool seem to switch between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1, so I think Reid and Adam could be accommodated quite well in either of those systems. He could fit in on the left side of attack (the kind of position Robinho was playing for City) instead of Grandin / Varney, or maybe on the left side of midfield, with Adam moving to the right-hand side of the middle three as he has done on a good few occasions this season already.
Steve Bruce was talking yesterday about Andy Reid. He said last season he got himself really fit and in great shape for 4 months and played great football, but he got injured and never got himself right after that. Says it all really.
Last chance saloon for Andy I think. No doubting his talent but he now needs to get fit, stay fit and play well consistently. If he does, he could find himself back in the Irish fold and at a bigger club in 18 months. If he doesnt, well....
