I'd expect similar comments to appear in some papers over the weekend but there are a few coincidental similarities between this world cup and the football team's breakthrough tournament of Italia 90.
- Ireland coming through one of the tougher groups to reach the last 8.
- Last over vs. Zim was as tense as the Genoa shootout :D
- Never give up, fight for every ball attitude from the team - inspired by a foreign-born coach and captain.
- Most obviously, Ireland supporters providing one of the few high points of a dull tournament with few memorable matches.
The 1990 World Cup led to changes (backpass rule) to make the game more exciting as many are speculating will have to happen with the one-day game as it could be in danger of getting squeezed out by 20/20 as the most popular short-version of the game.
