Dunphy with another tiresome rant intodays Star, saying dont believe the Gibson hype. He says he is not a patch on Paul Scholes. Genius point Eamonn. For god sake the weekend match was his second Premiership game, give the lad a bloody chance. As match of the day pointed out, he many similarities to a YOUNG Scholes. Nobody says he is the finished article or that he is as good as scholes at this moment.
Cue for the next European game where the fall guy of the RTE panel (Ronnie) will offer as evidence of uselessness, some 2 incidents where Gibson can be seen spit polishing his shooting boot while the game passes him by.
You cannot judge a player from a couple of first team games or because he couldn't get into one of the top teams in Europe over the last few years.
A couple of weeks ago I was saying it was too early to judge Gibson or to write him off.
People said I had no credibility, didn't know what I was talking about, Gibson was a nothing player, yada yada.
As usually happens, I was proved right, and those who wrote Gibson off have disappeared from this thread or else are now praising Gibson.
I still think it's too early. You can only judge a player over their career or a minimum of a season or two. But slowly Gibson is forcing himself into the reckoning at Old Trafford and can only improve with first team playing experience.
Ronaldo, Darren Fletcher, John O'Shea and many other players were written off by so-called 'experts' early in their careers. But they learned lessons and served their time and are now considered solid dependable players.
Gibson still has a lot to learn even at 22. This United team is one of the best ever and it was far easier to walk into United teams in the past who were struggling at the bottom of the table.

I think any comment towards either extreme would have been / would still be dumb in Gibson's case.
I think it's fair to say he's got something about him and confidence / self-belief will be key to unlocking his potential.

I can assure you that I have feelings towards neither. At 42 I still think of myself as being on the young side of mid-life, though my ankles, lower back and hips tell me otherwise.
Just as long as the important bits function.
I dont see him as in any way similar to Fletcher though is the thing. Fletcher has always had a good work rate about him and gotten involved, with various degrees of success and effectiveness, but he used generally put himself about. Gibson seems to have a tendency to float about games until he's within 25 yards of the goalmouth.Quote:

Gibson has managed to get into the squad through injuries to other players more than forcing his way into the teaml. Although as Stuttgart says maybe he is a confidence player and once in or around the first team he can stay there.
Certainly at 22 the guy has another possible 10 years of improvement ahead of him, and it looks promising.

If he performs well though like oshea and fletcher have proved in the past that versatility is the key in fergusons eye then it be a big reason to keep him at old trafford. so fingers crossed he is solid tonight and gets stuck in.
I don't think styles come into it so much. The point is that there's scope for players to improve while on the edges of a squad like Man Utd's - O'Shea and Fletcher are two of the more recent examples. Furthermore, the number of injuries, Scholes' impending retirement and the general lack of nailed down starters in their current midfield suggests an opportunity. If Gibson has the ambition to become a really good player, and the belief that he can do it, I can only imagine he will attempt to do so where he is. If he's gotten nowhere in two or three years, he'll probably give up and leave, but until then, I don't see him going anywhere.Quote:

Gibson is still a young player who has a lot of potential. The fact that Fergussen is putting a lot of faith in him shows he has high hopes for him.
