Just to change the subject, it was boring, I was in Jackman Park Limerick with Mayo U-18 lost 6-0 not to worry.
But alarm bell did ring having talked to the Limerick Junior Chairman, asked what it cost to put teams into there league. €300 per team compared that with Mayo

Well done to Ryan Connolly (ex Ballyglass) on being part of the Ireland U-16 team that beat Italy 1-0 in the Malta tournament. He also set up the only goal with a cross. It's good to see him become a regular at international level following in the footsteps of David Joyce.

The Republic of Ireland Under-16 recorded victory against Italy on Sunday in their first fixture of the Malta International tournament.
Selcuk Tidim’s struck the only goal of the game with 13 minutes remaining, putting the finishing touch to a flowing move that involved Shane Murray, Oliver Kelly and Ryan Connolly.
The FC Pauli striker connected with Connolly’s cross from the left, giving the Italian goalkeeper no chance.
The goal was Tidim’s fourth in his past four matches after the German-born striker declared for Ireland through his mother.
His rich vein of form began on his debut against Belgium and he followed that up with a goal in each of the matches against Israel.
Ireland’s main threat in the first half came through centre-back Mark O’Brien. Twice the Cherry Orchard defender got the better of his marker in the box from corner kicks but he saw one of his headers saved and the other angle over the crossbar.
Tidim was presented with a great chance to break the deadlock, also in the first half, but contrived to blast his close-range shot over the bar following another teasing centre by Connolly.
More chances were spurned by Oliver Kelly and Shane Murray in the second half but it was left for Tidim to secure the victory on 67 minutes.
Irish manager Vincent Butler (pictured left) said in the aftermath of the win. “It was very pleasing performance and all the players did the jobs they were asked to do.
“Selcuk came up with another goal for us and, in the end, we could have won the game by a larger margin.”
Butler has guaranteed the seven players not in the line-up against Italy a starting place in the team which meets Malta on on Tuesday. Ireland will complete their group on Thursday by playing Turkey, who defeated Malta 2-0 in the other group game played on Sunday.

Note: International matches played from Under-17 downwards consist of two 40 minute halves.

Just came across an old telegraph yesterday and was looking at the sports section. Their was a picture of Pat Tierney(Mc Carthys bar) getting some award for "Mountgable Celtic". I dont remember this club but im told they existed somewhere on the cong-clonbur border.
It got me wondering, what other clubs took part in the Mayo league that folded, where were they from and why did they not survive??
Anyone add to this list or profile the "forgotten" clubs below. Eg, years in exsistance, location, reasons for folding

The name Mountgable Celtic caught my eye and some stage a couple of years ago but I couldn't find any info about them online.
I seem to recall that we had Castlebar Utd, and Barcastle in Castlebar at different stages. We also had Shraigh Utd, Dooniver Swifts and Parkside from Ballina. I am sure that there were others but cannot remeber now. Newport had a side also along with Ballyhaunis.Quote:

Barcastle I think were essentially Castlebar united who then became town
pretty sure there was a "western harps" team or some name like that years ago in ballyheane before both clubs joined and became b\heane utd.mossy will know im sure
The Newport team were called Newport Town, and went tits up about 17-18 years ago, maybe a bit less. Balla had a team as well. Westport textiles also had a team but not sure if it was in the mayo league or not...Quote:

Mountgable Celtic were based in Corr na Mona between Clonbur and Maam in Galway. They played for a few years and were quite successful climbing the divisions and winning the Chadwicks cup (or whatever it was called then). Basically they were based around a successful GAA team and when that began to break up (because of age and commitments) Mountgable fell apart.Quote:
