I think Garvan's lengthy absence with glandular feaver may have delayed what looked like an imminent move to THe Premiership (Everton had made an offer but were not willing to pay the £5 million that Ipswich were demanding).
I would still prefer to see players who are excelling at Championship level playing ahead of guys who are playing reserve team football. If we had established Premiership players then I would agree with you but we dont.
I think its also a bit difficult to argue that the results justify the selection. We have been playing against pretty mediocre opposition and the performances (except agianst Georgia perhaps) have not been especially impressive particularly in the last game where Cyprus monopolised midfield posession. There is only one way of establishing whether the likes of O'Toole, McCann or Garvan would perform better and that is playing them against Poland.
yes you can. we had one point after three games in the last campaign but have 7 from 9 in this. we were good for long parts of the potentially tricky match in montenegro. we havent been brilliant or very entertaining but what counts above everything else is that we qualify for the wc whether we play well or not. so far so good on that front
My point was that results cannot prove that the players selected are better that the players who weren't selected. We might have done better against Cyprus with a Garvan / McCann pairing. There again we might not. The point is that it is only be giving these players a chance against Poland that we are going to find out whether they are good enough.
It is good for players to move up a level but I don't see Bewcastle signing anyone unless there is a change of owner. The manager is only there on a temporey basis at the moment.
You can see the headlines: John-Joe O'Toon...
John Joins Joe's O'Tooney Army
You read it here first!
Over on eleven-a-side, it's reported that he has been loaned out to Sheff Utd.
Can anyone confirm this?
edit: ^ Oops! Just read the Irish Abroad thread. Apologies.
Anyway, does anyone know why he has been loaned out? It seems odd given his early season promise.
from my reading it sounded like financial problems for Watford??
from the skysports article:
"Watford boss Brendan Rodgers revealed during the January transfer window that he was hoping to keep O'Toole at Vicarage Road, despite the club's financial predicament.
However, O'Toole has now headed to South Yorkshire, although he will be ineligible for Thursday's FA Cup fifth-round replay against Hull City."
Where is JJ these days?
He finished last season on loan at Sheff United, and was injured for the play off final I think.
answering my own question: on loan at Colchester in L1, under Aidy Boothroyd, his old Watford manager. Long way from being bought by Newcastle when they were still in the PL.
Pretty disappointing background on JJOT on the Watford forums, if true:

Sounds like a total moron.
I saw JJ play a few times in teh Championship and I thought he was a good prospect. Perhaps Sligo Hornet can fill us in here unless he's off down the boozer with JJOT ;) ?
I bet JJOT is buying the drink too.
Something must defo be up with him cause I know Blackwell was determined to sign him up in the summer & even talk of an agreed deal at the time of the T.Smith fiasco but the move was put on hold due to the ongoing injury he had then all went quiet & I just assumed Blackwell was waiting on the injury to go away before signing - never saw nowt about a move to colchester
hes only 20 so theres hope for him. Its unfortunate how many of our young players go this route, suppose its in our nature, the thorntons immediately come to mind. The overall consensus on the watford site seems to be that he has bucketloads of potential but major lack of professionalism.
is he actually a traveller?
Was he in the U21 squad against Estonia?
Actually, anyone know what the starting XI and squad was for that game? It wasn't in the match thread.
Republic of Ireland Under-21 v Estonia:
Shane Redmond
Scott Davies
Brendan Moloney
Michael Spillane
Ian Bermingham
Stephen Gleeson
Owen Garvan (capt.)
James McCarthy
Alan Judge
Cillian Sheridan
Jay O’Shea
I remember when there was talk of him going to join Newcastle last January. It's sad if these stories are true i.e. gets wasted 4 nights a week but he is still young and maybe Boothroyd can sort him out. Colchester might be the wake up call he needs.
the lad obviously never texted ron burgundy
Heard that he turned his back on a lot of the gaelic lads he used play with and go to school with as well so id say there is truth in what they are saying. But the friends of friends stuff i wouldn't pay too much heed to. Also that burgundy fella sounds like a tw@t going on a forum telling people what his "friends" have been telling him.
To be fair if I lived in Watford I would be on the lash all the time as its so close to Luton :)
And because hornet lives there too :D
Sad to hear.
After several breaches of Club discipline (involving drinking) Brendan Rodgers dropped him from the first team squad. After Rodgers left we hoped JJ would get another chance under Malky Mackay, but it seems he let himself down again, and Malky confirmed at a Fan's Forum I attended last week he would not feature under his management due to his "poor attitude and lack of professionalism"
Maybe Aidy Boothroyd can sort him out because he is undoubtedly a lad with great talent
John Joe ruptured a cruciate ligament on Tuesday and is likely to be out for up to 9 months. Terrible injury to have for a young player. He's been an ever present for Colchester who have been near the top of League One all year.
BBC Sport O'Toole ruled out until 2011
Sorry to hear about that. Hopefully he'll make a swift and full recovery. That kind of injury is scary, but with the advancements in surgery and physiotherapy, more and more players are coming back well from it.
JJ made his first appearance of the season on Tuesday, came off the bench against Bristol Rovers following his cruciate injury last April

Still only 22. He had the makings of a top class midfielder at one point. Is that ex-Spurs lad still at Colchester?
Mark yeates
Yeates is at Sheffield United
Re O'Toole - few things as disappointing as talent wasted.
He's at Sheff United now I think.
Lads,
O' Toole has the quality, it's his lifestyle and attitude that are the issue. Such a long time out of the game could help or hinder his game. He might appreciate more the talent he has, or he might have spent the last year on the p###. Hopefully it's the latter, only time will tell.

named in the League Two team of the year
