Apart from the top flight in England, money is very tight and there are literally hundreds of players every season let go and haven't been able to find a new club.
You'll be suprized with how good some players are who are unattached.
Every player Linfield signs are free players and we have argueably the best squad on the island.
We've also had players in the past who where unnached - Phil Charnock, Kenny Irons & Paul Dalglish who where all good players.
Saying that there are some terrible ones to Fitzrooy Simpson to name one(who is a former internional 40 odd caps or more and played in the Premiership regulary for Man City).
Is Angel unattached, because if not how did new york get him outside the transfer window?
Their defence is gone to crap.
Derry might be able to get away with the odd defensive error to poor players and teams in games like this but will be made pay by the better teams.:p
We've played this Setanta cup with a lot of fringe players and have beaten the LOIs 2 biggest favourites.
We are unbeated in 15 group games in the Setanta and have been the most consistant team in the Setanta over the last 3 years.
Topped the group last season with the two teams who came first and 2nd. We have topped the group this season who are 1st and 2nd favourites.
So why should I not believe it? I've now produced my proof behind my comment, you now disprove it.
The UEFA rankings show that our league is much btter than yours and you have not won your league by all that much. Furthermore your performances in Europe have been pathetic year in year out while Eircom league sides are progressing more than 2 rounds in some cases against some rated sides.
The setanta cup comes at a time when Eircom league sides are only getting into the swing of things while Lingfield and all have much of their season behind them so the fact that you are amateur is eliminated by that. If the same competition started in August no Ni team would qualify for the next round.
Also, you forgot to mention the fact that Eircom league sides have to play much bigger games at weekends than Lingfield et al taking a lot of focus away from their midweek matches. A big difference between playing Bohs at the weekend to playing Dungannon Swifts. Lingfield have basically a rest every weekend.
I knew you would use Europe.
Lets look at the basic facts here.
We play in Winter, we don't kick a ball in anger for over 2 months. When you played in Winter you got embarrassing results to.
The Setanta cup starts at the end of your pre-season but hte majority of the tournement is played during our business end of the season when our players face burn out and your players are all fresh and close to match fit.
When Europe comes round you are mid season when your fitness levels are obviously going to be at your peak.
And also who was comparing leagues? I wasn't I was comparing Linfield to the best you have and to be honest, your best is no better than Linfield. Our results against your best at any time of the Setanta has proven this.
2 years on the trot we where in the so called group of death and came out top both times quite convincingly.
We have nothing to prove, we have already done that.
Have to say, Derry were very poor tonight. We had plenty of time to get the ball, pass it around, do what we wanted. They were maybe a bit unlucky not to get the draw, but I don't think a fully-pro team like Derry should be losing at home to a part-time team like us with so little fight. They only really got interested after we scored.
The last time we won in Derry, their manager resigned within half an hour. Hasn't happened yet, but maybe by the next game?
Are they not? I don't tend to read threads involving youz and Linfield.
Oh well. Yez were muck tonight anyway.
Kevin McHugh, Ciaran Martyn was, not sure about rest. I hear most of the rest spend more time in the pubs about Derry than they do training anyway.
Fenlon wont resign, why would he. He is getting loads of cash very handy. And at some stage he will have a lucky run to cover his ass from relegation. Thats how chancers like him work. He will only go when he gets a pay off which should be soon if the Derry board want to avoid getting into a relegation battle. There is very little chance of them getting into Europe. Has Fenlon ever won a cup with Shels in his time in charge? Drogs have the league wrapped imo while Pats look healthy for 2nd or 3rd. Cork are way better than Derry this season from the brief matches Ive seen both teams ie Setanta Cup and other live TV games.
Given that you also think that a team being mid-table this early on means that they're in a relegation fight, then it's safe to say that your reports and thoughts on issues like this can be safely ignored....
How exactly is Fenlon "a chancer". Is it because he stood by his club and players when Ollie Byrne wwasn't paying wages for significant periods of time last season ? Was it when he turned down a lucrative offer to join Bohs as he was lead to believe that Shelbourne had got their act togetehr ? Some chancer.... Or was it when you open your mouth and nonesense flows out ?
As for cups - he won 3 league titles at Shels, and they're cups too you know. Maybe you think the mark of a good manager is a cup run. Meanwhile, those with any knowledge of football put greater emphasis upon league titles....
David will no doubt tear himself away from the latest Orange Lodge meeting to gloat in the fact that he has conquered foot.ie and Anglicised the hure out of it, well done fella.
The eternal struggle between part time and pro continues...Ad Nauseam!!
If Gary Beckett delivers 50 letters before he travels 35 miles to see a friend and passes Chris Morgan on the road who has bought a 35p newspaper out of a fiver who is the most professional and why?
Especially when compared to us. So my original point stands. Whatever it was.
Derry are not a completely full-time team, yes they have a lot of players who are, but are not completey!!
Bohs have (AFAIK) two part time players (Harkin and Rossiter). However, seeing as how the rest of our players are full time, I wouldn't dispute the tag Full-Time Club. It would be silly to suggest we were part time on the basis of two players.
i think we'll wait for a season (same as Derry). If we can get a few results together then you will see us in contention for the play-offs.
As for Derry i'd be surprised if ye wern't in europe next season. No team in the prem have looked unbeatable. Cork,Pats, Drogs and Derry will be top 4 but in what order i dont know.
