When you look at it in the cold light of day isn't it amazing that Staunton, who played under Dalglish, Souness, Houllier, Atkinson, Charlton and McCarthy and played with the likes of Keane, Dalglish, Brady, McGrath, etc can't conjure up an ounce of leadership or tactical awareness to beat 103rd best team in the world. What was he doing every day when he was a player - daydreaming?
If Stauntons leaves/resigns/get sacked realistically who is available/affordable and spare me the Martin O Neill/ Gus Hiddinck etc wish lists

Stan has got to go, I think pretty much everyone agrees on that. yes Kerr was is a better manager and I dont think we would have lost under him on Saturday but that would have simply been a case of kidding ourselves.
The whole of Irish football needs some serious re-thining and re-organisation before the national team and get better. But before all that starts, I think we need to appoint John Aldridge to the job as manager. Realistically he is the best we can afford and who is interested in the job.

The Football Association of Ireland has said that Steve Staunton's position is not under threat, even if the team lose against the Czech Republic.
Staunton has faced heavy criticism following Saturday's 5-2 defeat by Cyprus but FAI president David Blood has backed the under-pressure manager.
When asked whether a heavy defeat to the Czech Republic would alter matters, Blood replied: "No. Positively no.
"They (the management team) have to be given the time and the opportunity."
The FAI president added: "We are certainly not considering any change of our tactics at this particular time."
What f*ing tactics would they be. Surely as a major organisation you shoudl have a strategy
The statistics are damning as far as Staunton is concerned, but he and FAI chief executive John Delaney, who recruited the 37-year-old, have been given the dreaded vote of confidence by the association.
"There has been a lot of speculation in relation to our manager and our chief executive, and I want to allay fears their positions are under threat," asserted Blood.
Fears, Christ alive whose fears are they. I can only imagine he means within the Delaney and Staunton household

I really can't understand this thing about rebuilding either. imo Kerr had a rebuilding job. This was mainly done after the Euro 2004 campaign and before the WC campaign. He replaced Breen, Kelly, Harte (for a year or so anyway), Holland, Kinsella and a few others like Kiely, Healy, etc. He also stopped playing Duff up front and Kilbane on the left. He brought in the likes of A.Reid, Miller, Quinn, Kenny, Lee, McGeady, Elliott, Douglas, Doyle and anyone who was available to bring through.
Kerr left with a decent young squad and there was very little rebuilding to be done. He stuck with McCarthy's men for the Euro 2004 campaign and only needed a few months to then build his own team. You don't need 2-3 years to build a team.
As someone else said, Staunton only had the retirements of Keane, Cunningham & Holland to contend with.
The whole building for the future excuse is rubbish. In my opinion Staunton is right when he adds younger players to make up places 18-22 in the squad if he thinks they'll benefit from the experience. But the reality is that up until the current exceptional situation no youngsters are being trusted with first team action. Alan O'Brien's cameo in Stuttgart & Stephen Ireland's ill advised selection beside Kilbane are the only valid examples of Staunton picking youth.
And if he wanted to build a team around youth he could easily have entered a US Cup or Kirin Cup type event, resting all the established players, no?

1. Big Sam? Apparenlty was close to signing for Sunderland so maybe he wants away from the Reebok.
2. Alan Curbishley - did more than admirable job at Charlton and the part-time set up might suit him if he still wants a break.
3. Kenny Daglish, bit of a legend but doubt he'd be interested.
4. Lawrie Sanchez, has transformed one sh1t irish team so why not the other? 9and he used to manage The Bit O'Red!!!)

DUBLIN (AFP) - Under-fire Ireland manager Steve Staunton's position is not under threat, his FAI employers said ahead of Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against the Czech Republic.
Staunton faced heavy criticism following Saturday's 5-2 defeat to Cyprus in a Euro 2008 qualifier, with the suggestion the axe is to fall should a fifth successive loss follow against the Czechs.
But Football Association of Ireland president David Blood has insisted Staunton's job is not under threat - even if the team lose to the Czech Republic.
"There has been a lot of speculation in relation to our manager and our chief executive (John Delaney), and I want to allay fears their positions are under threat," Blood said Tuesday.
"On the contrary, they are consolidating their positions."
In particular with regard to Staunton, Blood added: "Why would we look at it at this stage?

Staunton has performed a major u-turn and called Everton midfielder Lee Carsley into the squad for the qualifier with the Czech Republic.
Carsley has spent the last two and a half years in retirement after deciding to focus on club football and family at the time but recently contacted Staunton to say he wished to be considered for future international fixtures.
The 32-year-old was then initially overlooked when the squad was announced for the Euro 2008 qualifying double-header with Cyprus and the Czechs.
When fellow central midfielders Steven Reid and Graham Kavanagh then withdrew through injury prior to Saturday's 5-2 humiliation by the Cypriots, Carsley's return appeared a formality but it was only after that game that Staunton made the call-up.

For those looking for a continental manager i have 2 words, Berti Vogts.
At the risk of raising a debate about the Eircom Legue etc, I would say that over the next 5-10 years most of our players will be playing what is commonly called 'British' style football i.e. fast pace, little time on ball, less skill. In fact this seems to be the style in both Ireland and Britain. I struggle to see what Guus Hiddink would do to instill a different style of play in the players when he sees them for 20 days a year.
Let's go with what we have and appoint a manager who understands that type of play. I'd go for Allardyce or O'Leary.
I know he has no Irish connections but what about someone like Warnock, least with his teams you get alot of heart and effort.
Also the FAI could never afford Hiddink I think he is now the highest paid international manager in the world.

Yeh that's because Abramovich is funding it. We really lost out not getting Hiddink years ago. Look at his record, he even got Korea to a semi at WC 2002. Surprised the Vogts appointment didnt work out in Scotland. He can handle the pressure Euro 96 (in England) i think all his predecessors won either the world Cup or the European Championship. I would guess a lot more pressure than the England job - in a football sense.
Maybe he was used to working with more skillfull/talented players than Scotland had to offer. Are the SFA much richer than the FAI ?
We need someone who is willing to make the tough decisions and drop the Keanes, Duffs etc when they are not doing the business e.g. Scholari. I don't think an irish based or English based manager would have the balls to do that, so it would need to be a continental manager...

Think I mentioned it before, but Ranieri? With a settled squad to choose from, he can't rotate much, and I still believe his best spell was the season before Abramovich took over as his best with Chelsea, with a relatively settled side, he took them to the Champion's League.

I'd be suspicious of Ranieri. It's true his first spell at Valencia and early time at Chelsea were successful, but in recent years he's become less hands-on than he used to be. His return to Valencia was an unmitigated disaster, despite being welcomed as a returning hero, inheriting a Liga/UEFA Cup winning squad and being allowed to buy all the Italians he wanted. We couldn't afford him, wouldn't be glamorous enough for him and don't need him.
Even Limerick's own Allardyce or Martin O'Neill on a part-time basis would be preferable
If we wanted to get Co Adriaanse it'd have to be soon as it won't be long before he's in a job. I'd be pretty sure he'd be interested considering he was in talks with China recently.
He got Willem II into the Champions league and had AZ Alkmaar playing some top class football. He got AZ to the semi finals of the UEFA cup. I watched the 2nd leg against Sporting Lisbon and it was honestly one of best matches I've ever seen (highlights). :) AZ should have won the match tbh (it went to extra time where AZ scored first. Sporting scored after that and away goals count as 2 in extra time).
He spent a season at Porto last year winning the league and cup double before resigning because the board didn't try hard enough to sign Venegoor of Hesselink.
tbh, he'd be up high up my list and I'd say he'd be interested. If he had us playing the type of football that he played at AZ I'd be delighted. :)
Has probably been mentioned already, but who would want the job?
Two major things will stop a decent guy getting the job; first of all the money we would offer and secondly the quality of the players available. A decent manager will want a decent pool of players to pick from so he can improve things enhance his reputation.
