4-2 Drogheda now
Make that 4-2 Drogheda
Season over in June unless we get dragged into a relegation battle
With Athlone and Drogheda - if no-one else - I don't think that'll be a concern for ye somehow!
Still, sign of a good league that different teams are challenging in different seasons.
Very comfortable victory for Dundalk against Sligo. Lovely goals from McMillan and Horgan.
Shields was the stand out player. The new Joey N'Do?
Very comfortable night for us tonight.. great to see Danny Morrissey back tonight and got on the scoresheet with his second touch.. Ian turner very impressive too.. oh ya also glen Crowe is very fat
We were rubbish tonight until we somehow mustered a 2nd goal and steered ourselves clear then.
I was impressed with Cockhill. One of the better junior sides I've seen.
How are Sligo justifying the need for Gary Stevens now, I'm beginning to think his greatest contribution this season was his handstand on soccer republic.
This was a really tough draw for us, so getting past the holders was a good achievement, it's another step forward, but we can't look any further past next Friday at home to St Pats.
Just on Sligo, on their league form, and apart from the other 3-0 defeat in Oriel, it's usual for a side to have lost so many games by so few goals. Then again they haven't scored near enough this season.
Edit 'meant its UNUSUAL'
Also Sligo still have a season ahead, Europe for starters in July, then trying to re-qualify by the end of the season by finishing as high up the league as possible. The last but will probably be very difficult, but not impossible.
St. Mochtas properly in finished season mode. Very poor tonight. Thought Rob Lehane was outstanding again and has been every time I've seen him in a City shirt. Should be given more game time.
Feel Caulfield needs to play like this in the league at some stage. We are going to take another Dundalk like beating at some stage the way we play in the league.
Haha quality
Sligo, Bray , UCD , Athlone and Bohs or Limerick gone, there's a maximum of 7 Premier teams in the last 16. Could be a handy run to the latter stages for someone
Boyle, Crowe and Creevy. Creevy wasn't fully fit, though he did come off the bench to score.
Langtry then went off injured, which didn't help!
Good game in tolka tonight, type of game which could have ended about 4-2. Shels better side in the first half. Great finish for the goal but it could have been prevented had Drohan not pussied out of a tackle in the lead up to the goal.
Sickening to not even get a replay. Completely dominated the second half had enough chances to win about 3 games but we just could not finish. In the second half alone we missed 5 sitters in front of goal. At one stage Whitty had a chance from about 5 yards out and he managed to hit it over. Some of the chances missed by us tonight players could only dream of getting. Once again we lacked a finisher. Willie Jon is our best finisher but missed out through injury.
We were missing a lot of players, with players injured and 1 or 2 away with the U19s at a tournament in Holland and doing exams.
Ford man of the match was rightly given to Blues central midfielder Kevin O Connor.
Referre was awful blew for a shels free at one stage then when the player received treatment he gave a hot ball. Awful tackle on Barrett in front the ref and he didn't even get a free. A blues player got a wee nudge in the back at one stage and got a free. Numerous times in the game players clearly pulling players back by the jersey and nothing was given.
Assistant made a big call early on to call off side against cogs but it was straight in front of blues fans and it looked as if he was a yard on side.
Nice wee break for a couple of weeks. I was surprised to so many first division sides get through to the next round.
Stu pointed out that its a sign of a good league when different teams challange and I straight away thought 'yup if they dont go whallop' and then you state the above - well thanks for the reality check ha!
Couple of great goals tonight, but really... playing N'Do at right full/wing back? Second half N'Do pushes up and then Cretaro is at right full back... just bizzare tactics from a side that were well beaten in the league, seemed to be at a loss tonight too! Dundalk were ruthless and efficient and really didnt break sweat. Again there were a few decent chances not finished off especially last 20 mins. Joey was either injured, not bothered, not fit, or had just decided he wasnt going to keep up. When Sligo had the ball and passed it about, Dundalk just sat back, waited for a sloppy one and then pounced. I expected more from Sligo/Baraclough tonight after the league game but Dundalk just seemed like they were going through the motions unfazed. Shields was once again immense and is now the most effective player in the league in his role, arguably a potential bigger loss to this Dundalk side than Towell if he were to leave or be injured! 60 or so Sligo fans on the terrace + those in the stand so possibly bout 100 travelling supporters.
Tweaked his hamstring in Dundalk. But I think only Clarke and Ayman are long term. The three on the bench are returning from injury but not yet fully fit afaik.
We've a squad of 24, including a new player who was on the bench in Athlone but is doing his leaving cert at the moment, so we kind of have to put half injured players on the bench just to fill it.
We were missing Manning and Ludden, and Molloy went off injured. Take yer beating!
As regards Sligo, what the hell is going on?
Well, without injuries and suspensions, this is the team we could have played against Dundalk...
Rogers, Keane, Peers, Henderson, Gaynor, Russell, N'do, Cawley, Greene, Createro, North.
I suspect it might have been a tad more difficult for Dundalk in that case. Joseph had to come back before fit to fill in at right full and Raf, who came on in the second half, is just back from four months injury.
Dundalk are excellent at the moment and, like us two years ago, a joy to watch. Paul Cook was there last night so expect to lose Towell. Our season is now over so maybe the shackles will be atken off and they will be let play like they can. Either way, Barra and Stevens will go at end of season. Time up, but they owe us nothing. Four trophies in three seasons will do grand.
Seriously thinking of tippin up to Oriel on Friday night - this could be the game of the decade.
There is no doubt that Sligo are hampered by quite a lot of injuries. (Why so many injuries though? If it was us, people would be saying plastic pitch etc etc).
The thing I noticed is the lack of pace and width in the team. Two years ago, the power and pace of Sligo were frightening. You'd think you were doing really well, then BOOM, a goal out of nowhere. It is also clear that their confidence is low, the looked like a team that expected to lose last night. That is usually what happens to teams with that mindset.
I don't think there is a lot wrong that cannot be fixed by some minor personnel changes before next season.
Well, we will change the manager/assistant anyway but what we need is someone who will trust the players to attack. We are being set up not to lose rarther than win atm.
In fairness I think folk saying that Sligo have nothing to play for its a bit thin. It may be a long shot for them to win the league but finishing higher than 5 th is certainly a realistic objective and possible euro qualification for 4 th provided one of the top 3 win the cup
While it was easy in the end for us. Sligo has us a little rattled in the first 10 15 minutes and they forced us to make unforced uncharacteristic errors. Luckily for us they couldn't capitalise on it. our first knocked the stuffing out of them. 2nd was 2 minutes into the second which is a common theme with us. Just kills teams.
Pats next week can't wait.
2-0 to Shamrock Rovers against Sheriff YC after 5 minutes.
Finished 4-0 to Rovers.
Limerick 1-2 Bohs in added time.
when is the draw for the next round?
The draw was early july last year but the games for the past few years are usually played late August
That's a totally fair point on the amount of players out Sligo have, most sides would find having those amount injured at one time very difficult to cope with.
As for Towell, sure there are different people watching him every week now both home and away, it will take a big offer for DLK to even consider letting him go. There is no doubt he will go at some point, however I think whenever that is, it will be at a higher standard than Chesterfield.
Paul Cook appears to be looking to sign half the league at this point. How long is Towell's contract for?
To completely not answer your question -
Ballynanty 2-1 Phoenix
UCC 0-0 St Michael's
To round off the second round games.
Good point made in Oriel Friday night re Towell leaving - solidarity payment will still be made if he stays to november u23 etc. If he leaves in the summer then the potential weakening of the side and the impact of missing out on the league as a result and the money involved in qualifying for champions league could be the minimum level of fee required by the club to sell. So say 70k in solidarity payment + winning the league and champs league money could be the benefit to keeping him til end of contract. Lose him and gamble fading out of league challange then the fee should be a minimum of the above amount combined.
