Which would be all very well, were RTE a solely commercial broadcaster.

But they're not. They have a public service requirement, which they receive license funding for. This to ensure they can cover the full breadth of Irish life - including sport in Ireland - without having to be a god-awful American sit-com mess like TV3.

So in-effect they're getting paid twice to show Irish football, as they should be covering it to some degree anyway under their public service remit/funding.

Bohs' win over Dundalk was the main soccer headline on RTE ahead of the Pl fixtures tonight. They've obviously been listening to their complaints.

dont agree with this............... you get wall to wall gah progs on all the time then the LOi hasnt a chance at all.................I mean celeb bannistor, the road to croker, the local heroes thing, etc etc etc.......how many gah progs are on the TV? Wouldnt it be nice if they did something with irish league fans etc?

being saying this all along. the increse in GAA programmes in the last two years is nothing short of propaganda. Started with Underdogs, in irish of course to remind us of our gealic identity. Celeb Bannistoir to say any fool can get involved with the GAA, road to croker for the auld ones but that local hero thing took the ****, if they could have a muck savage roaring at me in a darkened room with a Nazi sign on his arm then this programme was it. but its not just our sport,
our athletes are at the world championships at the moment and doing quite well. They are more amateur then the GAA "expences" lads, being on minimum wage. RTE didnt cover the championships instead wasting all budgets on GAA programming some of which are mentioned above.

are you reading stephen alkin? your not biggotted your just their sponsor, and main propagandist

In addition there will be 36 Monday Night Soccer programmes every year until 2013, with every game covered in the domestic league and cup.

In these times RTE is not immune from the downturn of the economy. We have lost �68m in advertising revenue in the past year. We have covered many of the Irish sides in Europe in recent years: Cork City, Drogheda Utd, Bohemians and St Pats. More indeed than any other station in Ireland.

However, in 2009 we have no spare funds. We have had to cut back on a lot of our output and soccer is not immune from that.

Wow - a WHOLE 13 live games - quick, break open the bunting and alert the press!

I was just thinking of this again last nite................still cant get over the fact RTe didnt even bother to show one LOI team this season in Europe.............a bloody disgrace.............I for onw will never pay for a RTE TV licence (im in the UK now though!!:p)

Outside being mentioned by the FAI at one of the Fans' Forums which several people on here attended.

Unless you're accusing the FAI of sometimes not being entirely truthful just so they come across in a good light?

It's E3m "indirectly" though isn't it? In that, the FAI reduced their asking price in exchange for a weekly prime time highlights show.

Not that it makes any difference but just wanted to clarify.

It's €4m over the course of the contact. Don't know how long the contract is for, though.

The FAI agreed that RTE could reduce their "offer" by 3 million in return for MNS.

It met with stern resistance from RTE but they agreed.

It is still the equivalent of 3 million euro in cash that the FAI have to forego to allow a highlights programme on RTE.

Now I enjoy MNS and it is normally the only programme I watch on RTE these days. I can live with the lack of first division coverage but it is a bit much RTE claiming they are committed to domestic football when they would clearly rather not show it.

No doubt the English FA have to pay RTE to show the premiership on saturday nights too. :eek::rolleyes:

See, this is the bit that really gets me. RTE are paying for, ie. spending our licence fee money, on a highlights show that is already available for anyone in Ireland to view, just a couple of hours later on BBC1.

If it's just advertising revenue they want then why don't they clear all the quality, homegrown produced shows from their schedules and exist on a diet of imported American and British soaps, sitcoms and talkshow- oh, I see...
