good post
why isnt there any cups even? the league started in july and as galway pulled out we only have 10 games in 4 months
There is nothing wrong with the format, the problem is clubs who enter competitions and can't fulfill basic fixtures. Galway are a disgrace, and should have their licence revoked, they have no underage structure and the clubs who have are being penalised because these "clubs" persist, as though they have some god given right to particapte in football because of who they are?
Part of the reason clubs can't fulfil fixtures is because there are so few games. How do you convince a promising young player to stay with your club if he only gets max 12 games in the year? Not a hope- they'll stay with/ rapidly return to their junior clubs and rightly so. A few years ago there were a lot more matches.. I can't understand why the decision was made to reduce this again. If the FAI don't sort the format out then they have to introduce dual registration so players can represent senior and junior clubs in the same season.
Limerick tried to get the dual registration in on many occasions. In limerick we would normally do quite well in the league format but then with a big long break between league and the knockout stages the junior clubs come in and offer stupid money to players and so we'd have a weakened team heading to the play offs. The southern league as only 10 games this year as no team from Kerry, Lifford/Clare, Kilkenny or cobh made it. something badly needs to be done
Finn Harps 2 - 3 Castlebar Celtic
I don't know how Harps lost this game, but we did. Harps went 2 up and were coasting, it really should have been 4 or 5 by half time but instead Castlebar got a soft free on the edge of the box and in fairness the the young lad he hit a cracking free into the top corner. Harps missed 2 absolute sitters early in the second half but Castlebar got back in with a header from a corner and put us under pressure for a few minutes and got the winner from a mistake at the back.
Derry City 3 - 2 Mervue Utd
Looks like Derry City ( 1st ) and Salthill Devon ( 2nd ) to qualify from this group
afaik sligo rovers v derry city on wednesday night
Are there alternative tournaments a club could enter its U-20s in? We're fortunate in a way that we have collegiate tournaments to play - college leagues, Collingwood Cup, etc. Are there any regional equivalents at all?
thought it was a hoe game for us...duno where they got convoy outa?! whats that like?
What time is kick off in Convoy?
I'd say it's because the college leagues are fairly independent.
As Sam says it really is very difficult for LOI clubs to have a decent youth set-up, especially at the top end where you want the players to be able to transition into your first team squad when required.
College is totally different afaik. We had 7 players in the LYIT squad last season whilst also playing for Harps.
Players can sign for the LOI clubs in the transfer windows and leave in Novemeber again but it's far from ideal. In July we signed a full under 20 squad to play until November. We can not supply those players with competitive football between November and July, that's ridiculous. Thankfully we have unearthed a few guys who have gone on and played in our senior squad BUT the others are lost and are free gain for Derry, Sligo, 'Stute, etc to come in.
Derry 3 0 Sligo Rovers
Our appeal was thrown out, don't what implications this will have on our licence
Don't think it has any. The license documentation says you just have to have a certain number of underage teams. Even if you don't you can probably get around it by having some local club affiliate to you.
Castlebar 1-3 Derry, as per Aertel
Salthill Devon 5 - 0 v Finn Harps
playing derry again this week maybe thursday
Any idea when these are to be played? Looks like Derry 1st, Salthill 2nd - presumably top teams get home draws?
sligo rovers v derry city thursday 8pm in the showgrounds
Sligo Rovers 0-4 Derry.
I thought it was 5, and it prob should have been 10.
Was this the last u20 game for rovers? hopefully yes.
First half not to bad but a dreadfull 2nd half, Derry are in a different league, but we helped to make them look good.:o
We started this competition away to Salthill Devon and Finn Harps and picked up 4 points, we looked like we could compete against anyone.
Wrong.. things have gone downhill since, just pure reliefe its over.:o
2 big players decided to leave for junior football. our goalkeeper has been away all season with mayo gaelic, and is now away in college. another of our best players broke his collar bone early on, one broke his jaw and another had to get two operations on a leg injury in july or so. and danny fallon left for UCD. its not been an easy season but most of the squad are still 17/18 so theres still time to improve for these young lads.
not making excuses but any team would struggle losing 7 or 8 starting players so early in the season. found it hard at times to even have a few subs the injuries go so bad
Rovers u-20 team are very poor in fairness...not one of them look capable of playing for the first team regularly.
We know that players left but is anyone coaching whats there?
yeah and hes doing the best he can with what he has, the club need to step upto the mark aswell and give a hand with things. one man cant run the whole reserve/u20 set up. they cant even give us a physio, and no one tells the manager where were playing until about a day before a game, the club change alot of home fixtures at the last minute to junior grounds around the town and county
I agree that the club don t care , and I know there are players out injured but at times , not just tonight, its like every man for himself.
Rovers were a shambles at full time, lost their shape, couldent make a challenge, couldent keep the ball.
At the moment I would agree but some of those lads are only 16/17. There are 1 or 2 lads with a good 1st touch, good passing , can read the game and calm under pressure, but if they dont get coaching and play with better players they wont make it.
The next 2 yrs is important for them, they should be training with the 1st squad.
the performances havnt been great admit that meself. no confidence or belief really, dont know can that be worked on or is it a case of either you have confidence or you dont. footballs all about confidence., the younger fellas have ability and can improve for next year
Salthill Devon 4 - Derry City 4
Some u20s were away a with Connaught squad this wk end, what is that about?
