What a game today between Sheff U and Wigan. With West Ham leading at Old Trafford, Wigan had to win and it was backs to the wall for the last 30 minutes as they lead 1-2. Fantastic stuff with ball after ball going in to their box but they held out. Best game in terms of excitement and tension I have witnessed for a long time.
Well done to Wigan. Sheffield derbies next season :D

How many times did I hear "defining moment" coming out of Sky today?
I see that Sheff Utd. manager, Warnock, accepted his club's fate with great dignity, expressing his warm thanks to the officials on this tense day, for doing their very professsional best to be very fair to both sides.
In flat blankly refusing even to consider the notion of his club being the recipient of scores of bad officiating decisions over the season, Warnock has stood head and heels over the myriad of managerial whingers and whiners that continually pollute our TV screens with bad sportsmanship.

Glad to see West Ham stay up as they have a team which should be pushing for Europe. Sheffield Utd can feel a little bit annoyed at Man Utd and Liverpool for fielding weakened teams against their rivals, but at the end of the day they didn't do the job themselves so have nobody else to blame.

Yes, Sky put on their biggest hype merchant of all time among the commentators: Alan Parry where any pass even slightly better than the ordinary is "brilliant" but he didn't spoil my enjoyment of the game and not just because the Blunts lost. It was just a great game for pure tension from start to finish and to see ex-Owls' manager Jewell keep his team up after some poor decisions against his side late on in the season was, as footballers say, the icing on the cake.

Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock has lashed out at Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafael Benitez for the teams they put against his side's relegation rivals.

Warnock was making reference to United's game against Chelsea in the FA Cup final this Saturday and Liverpool's match against AC Milan in the Champions League final on 23 May.
United had already won the Premiership title when they played the Hammers, who needed at least a point at Old Trafford to guarantee survival.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's concentration in recent weeks appears to have been solely on the Champions League and Fulham secured their Premiership status by beating the Reds.
"I was disappointed at United's team," added Warnock. "You would have hoped and thought that, last game of the season, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic and probably two or three more might have played.
"I think Sir Alex sold me a dummy in midweek when he said he would field a strong team.

"He has his own reasons, though. Maybe the FA Cup final next week is more important to him.
"At least I knew the players that were playing. I didn't even know two of those that played for Liverpool at Fulham last week.
"I'd never heard of them but when you are a foreign manager like Rafa Benitez, you probably don't give two hoots about what Sheffield United think.
"It's a long journey to Fulham, so the players are probably better off at home with their feet up.

"You are bound to feel bitter about the circumstances in our relegation but it's not going to get us back in the Premiership.
"You just have to get over the bitterness and move on but it's difficult at the moment. Fate is fate, though. Life is like that."
The Blades had a late chance to equalise against 10-man Wigan but Danny Webber hit the post when one-on-one with keeper Mike Pollitt.
"It's a gut-wrenching and horrible feeling for all of us at the club," stated Warnock.
"It's the worst feeling of my career because it would have been my greatest achievement to keep us up.
"All season we haven't made it difficult enough for other teams and have given goals away when we have been in good positions.
"Wigan haven't had to work hard for either goal and we've committed suicide really. The lads have been magnificent and tried their hardest and I couldn't have got much more out of them.
"But it's still very disappointing when you go down because of the thickness of a post."
Warnock refused to be drawn on his own future amid claims that contract talks had broken down.
He stated: "I don't want to talk about myself. It's a time for the club to look at what has gone on and then think about me later."
Haha I was going to post up what Warnock had to say to negate any good feeling towards him. Good to see ex-Wednesday man Paul Jewell send Warnock scurrying back down to his level given what Warnock had to say about Jewell during his time at Hillsborough. Roll on the derby next year!
Should West Ham be allowed to stay up? If proven they were fielding illegible players surely a points deduction was the required punishment?
Will be interesting to see if Sheffield United take the legal route. Will Wigan back them up as promised?

So said Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock on 28 December, prior to his side's double header against the Gunners on 30 December and Middlesbrough two days later.
Strange then, that the man who fielded a reserve team as the Blades crashed out of the FA Cup 3-0 at home to League One side Swansea City now says he is against teams putting out anything less than their strongest XI.

I've a lot of time Jewell, remember he kept Bradford up a few years ago with that last day win against Liverpool, shows he can relax players for the big occasion. Nice guy too.
