Rovers I can understand where you're coming from. Most people who slag off the EL are the same ones who pay their Sky Sports subscriptions and travel to England every weekend. If they used some of that money to go and watch some EL games the EL would be in a lot better condition.
What are the main reasons that people don't go to the EL? Standard of Football, Standard of Stadia + pitches, atmostpehere. All of which could be improved if people got up off their backsides and went to some of the games.
If we want Ireland to make a mark at the top level of the game then we have to start supporting the game here.
I'm partly guilty of this myself. I've only gone to a few EL games(a long time ago). I want to support an EL team yet I've no natural affinity with any of them at the moment.

In other words to spend 20 pounds (30 euro) a week on a hobby would be peanuts for your average rural or urban Irish person.
In fact the Germans would find it more difficult at the moment to pay such a price for 2 hrs entertainment. BTW I was at the FrankenStadion in N�rnberg a few weeks ago and the ticket prices for a Bundesliga game start at about 13 Euros!

i think that maybe my point has been misinterpreted slightly. although it may be only 20 a person. how much for a family ? much more. i know of people, and this is a regional problem and not a national problem, in certain areas of the country who simply could not afford to bring a family to a game every week. they can hardly afford to keep that cat from the door. i dont know all the figures but with farming being a staple industry in ireland (this been proven by there opinion on the potential new EU farming subsidies) they are not going to be as well off as a research and development country. this may change but surely people can see that the people would not pay the money that would be required to attract more interest and quality to the game.

surely the clubs are to blame for this lack of affinity as well, also the media

yes. living in 1950's Ireland can be tough. But we manage...

I get your point. Yet why do some many people support English football clubs. I think it's because of TV and media coverage + the number of Irish internationals playing there.
I think the FAI have a lot to answer for. Football is probably the most popular sport in Ireland and yet we still have very few going to EL games.

And the IFA up north and the WFA in Wales ? Soccer in Ireland could never compete with the GAA and with our best players going to the England to play in a bigger and more affluent league, the local game never had a chance no matter what the FAI (i.e. Irish soccer people) could do.

Playing a game and getting off your backside away from Skysports to watch a game are two totally different things. Look at soccer in the USA - played by the masses but totally dominated from a spectator point of view by baseball, american football etc. Blame the USAFA that's what I say.

I still think there is more that could be done. The marketing and organisation of the game here is terrible.

Have a look at the Irish teams under Touhy and Giles and Hand. In 1972 Touhy was frustrated at the refusal/reluctance of English clubs to release players. After we lost to Russia 1972 he went around the clubs in England to strike up a rapport and got our players released for the French game that followed. We won that and if we had Giles for that Russian game then Touhy I believe would have been the first manager to get Ireland to a Finals. The Irish team had at least one LOI player, Tommy Mc Conville, in the French game
As for Kavanagh, I had heard of him by reputation but I had barely seen more than a few minutes of him play at English 2nd or 3rd level. I only took notice of him when he played in a green shirt.

Of course the FAI are to blame for the state of football in this country.
They are supposed to be the ones administrating it. So I dont think it is unreasonable to land some of the blame as to where the game is at in Ireland at the doors of Merrion Square. No power without responsibility. is there any other country in the world that sends so many kids to another country to become footballers?? why is that an acceptable situation to some people???? why have the FAI not built a bloody stadium to play in yet?????
