eh ORA, where did you get this from?! Did you help sign the agreement?! ;)

Allegedly when Nicky Brennan took over from Sean Kelly the whole scenario changed re:the use of Croke park. The press have got wind of whats going on and expect a lot of coverage pre the Poland Friendly.
Brennan is totally opposed to the use of Croke park for soccer and rugby despite his public persona and has been blocking a lot of things behind the scenes including cutting back on the use of the pitch for training sessions.
Middling quality stadium, terrible access, dangerous signage (depending on which signs you see, Blocks 722, 723 only exist part of the time and 724 doesn't exist at all at all - until you're at it), horrific public transport links...
Roll on Lansdowne Road and being able to park in my Dad's office, a few hundred yards away, and actually drive away - or get on a train in to the city centre without clambering in to a tiny under capacity train station - or get a taxi on the surprisingly un-people-blocked roads - etc...
Dunno about all that. I know I'm in a minority but I'd have preferred us to take these two campaigns to UK grounds (assuming FIFA/UEFA not having a problem with it). It's only 12 competetive games and I think it'd have been interesting to compare what the Gah are charging with quotes obtained from a whole host of London clubs in the Premier and Championship. That's before you look at other UK grounds in cities with large Irish communities ...Villa Park, Goodison, Anfield, OT, Elland Road, City Ground.
Travelling from Limerick it's scarcely more expensive to attend any event in London than it is in Dublin. Also, there's a lot of patronising platitudes spouted in this country about our diaspora. This was an opportunity to do something real and tangible for them.
Too many non-football related concerns were taken on board when CP was settled upon i.e. Pubs, money out of local economy, local TDs having to face their LVA overlords...
I think that similar to changing the thread “one night in November” to “another northie thread”, this one should be changed to “another gaa bashing thread”
To blame the recent atmosphere on the ground is very lazy. The blame on the lack of atmosphere lies on the feet of the supporters.
Prior to the home venue being moved to croke park, the atmosphere in Lansdowne was quite poor. There hasn’t been a great atmosphere at a match since the Dutch game 7 years ago. Only the Israel and Czech republic game came half arsed close to it. In fact, the atmosphere for the 2 big games in the WC 06 qualifiers against France and the swiss was pathetic. The atmosphere at the Slovakia game in Croke park was comparable to Czech game in Lansdowne I thought. The Slovakia game showed that an atmosphere in Croke park could be created if the supporters bothered. It can be bettered to.
There are not enough supporters at the home games. There are far too many “entertain me-ers” !!! It’ll be a day too soon when I hear another “supporter” saying “ive paid €50 for his ticket and I deserve to be entertained better than this”. Cant see this changing too much when we move back to Landsdowne. I say its time to get a proper vocal group of supporters together in the same area at the game and let the atmosphere build from there.
The moaning of certain players in the team is also unacceptable. The abuse some get is not on. It doesnt help when a lot of it is spawned in the media. Give them a chance, most who get this abuse are only learning the international game at 20-22 years old..These lads want to play for their country and deserve our support if putting in the effort.
I conceed that some of the atmosphere can be lost with the distance from the pitch too the stands, but that cant be used. There are 100s of top football stadia worldwide that still maintain there atmosphere and yet have a olympic size running track between the pitch and stands. It cannot be solely blamed. In fact i think a lot of the stadia used in the euros this year had that, yet the atmosphere did not not seem to suffer (that came across on the on the tele).
Some of the comments on this thread are petty…
someone on here complaining about the traffic (and them not even going to the game!!!). if your are not going to the game while complaining about the match traffic, stay on the aa roadwatch website or the commuting section on boards.ie.. croke park is on a main artery out of the city northbound. Of course it will cause more delays than usual….although I have to say croke parks location is handy for me heading down from the north…It used to be hellish to get across the liffey some evenings for the games in D4(hopefully the new tunnel will make it easier when we get back to landsdowne).
As for terming croke park a “soulless bowl”, that I had to laugh at…Rarely does a stadium see such passion. It would be better to call the entertain me-ers the "soulless bores" in croke park…
As for terms referring the game as soccer/football/association football, I couldn’t care less. Some on here are trying to create division by denouncing those who refer to the game as soccer. During last nights coverage of the FAI semi, soccer and football was both referred on many different occasions…so fu4king what..I don’t see a problem…. I don’t care what programme name MNS is given…at least we are getting a weekly show on the LOI.
In regard to the stewards removing tri-colours with slogans written on them, I cant say im too opposed to it. Some of the stuff written on our national flag at games are highly embarrassing. Advertising pub names and putting your individual name on it (so to show your mates on tele ) on our flag is not on. A flag I have seen recently was something like “Denise and Sean on Tour”…what fu4king next??…”Denise loves Sean”!??!.
If making a banner, why not have an all green banner with white writing on it….And attempt a bit of humour instead of the usual “ballymuck on tour”…By all means take the tricolours, but save them from the usual scrall owners name/pub names etc on them…
Make a bit of noise and get behind the boys instead of making more noise on here…
well said, great post one of the finest ive ever read on here. The only thing I'd like to add re: the flags is, if its your local junior football clubs name on it I think its great. The local junior club at home had it in paris all those years ago. It was bloody huge, and could be seen from nearly all the stadium, and it just had the club name and "fc" at the end. Thats the only thing I'd like to see on the flags. "sean loves deinise" LOL
Great Post. As you say landsowne road is no better for atmosphere then croker. We go to different countries and see how other fans are organised take montenegro for example there fans sang for the whole of the game.
Irish fans make croker what it is and no team should fear playing us there as we all sit back and expect to be entertained. Irish fans are so disorganised at home games.
The only time irish fans really get behind the team is at away games. To be blaming the gaa on our own failings is a bity petty. While i cannot wait to get back to landsdowne I dont think the atmosphere is going to be any better.
Don't see the problem with raising legitimate concerns about the deal with the GAA for the use of their facilities or their priggish stewards interfering with supporters flags and banners.
They're getting good money for the use of their less than perfectly suitable facility, top dollar and then some from what I gather, and for that as far as I'm concerned they shouldn't have any input whatsoever as regards for example what gets played on big screens at half time.
I don't have any major contention with the rest of your post re: the atmosphere, the traffic, football/soccer etc until....
None of the stewards business whats written on the private property of any supporter provided it's not incitement to hatred or similar. So far as I'm aware banners and flags were removed because they were covering up advertising hoardings purchased by the likes of Guinness. All well and dandy if it's one of the GAAs own events but to my mind they have no business pimping their sponsors at an event for which they, they GAA, have already collected their sizeable wedge. Their sponsorship deals shouldn't cover FAI fixtures.
Incidently I too like seeing the names of towns, football clubs from ANYWHERE (I recall someone on here getting offended about a tricolour with Chelsea written on it ...come one come all I say), even private individuals who want to say hello. I do feel our flag is a little bit cheapened when I see the names of pubs, clubs and sandwich bars etc on it. But only to about the same extent I get a bit disgusted when I see the likes of Sinn Féin use our flag as a table cloth at their press conferences.
Not so LR had my flag removed from Upper Canal by Security (or so I was told) the steward had no problem with it as I checked with him prior to putting it up and he and me checked there was no advertisement . So there was no advertising being blocked as there were no advertisements and it would not be because of blocked views from Lower Canal as the flag wasnt any bigger than the 'advertising' space.
The lack of Irish flags around Croke Park really gives a poor impression
No one said othewise
I disagree. Just because you can do something doesn't mean they should.
Of course they can make the rules of their stadium, but making rules such as banning football advertising during a football game they are being paid well for simply makes them look petty.
It is unnecessary and while they are within their rights to do so it is only painting the association in a poor light. They have lost a lot of respect from myself, someone who has been a GAA person since birth. Between this and the Thomas Davis scenario I have become very disillusioned by the hierarchy of the association.
I'll defer to your first hand experience Newryrep. I'm going on what I'm being told and am reading. ...was any reason at all given as to why your banner had to come down?
Would they object to those checkered flags you always see a plethora of at GAA championship matches? Between Limerick and Armagh we could kit the place out in a manner they'd find more familiar and less intrusive maybe? :D
