I don't know where the word came from, but as young lads at a disco, we used to have a competition to see who could dance with the ugliest girl. The winner would drink free for the rest of the night. We named it grot hour. A bit mean in hindsight, but you're only young once. But to be fair, the girl that was that evenings grot also got free drinks.
